The Russians have a surprisingly bold one that fits this Sunday s Gospel: Bread is the beginning of everything. Judging from the first reading, Elijah might have felt that it was too late for bread too late for life itself. This great prophet was at the end of his rope and endurance. Then, not one, but two angels visit him. One offers food and drink. The other gives startling directions. For Elijah, this food from the angels is bread for his journey. On the strength of the heavensent gift of food, he walks to the mountain of God. In today s Gospel, Jesus offers himself, not just as bread for the journey, but as bread for life itself. He gives his flesh as life for the world. I am the bread of life (John 6:48). He is the beginning of everything. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. Prayer Shawl Ministry * We welcome the SFC school children (male or female) to participate in helping make hats, scarves, fingerless gloves, and even head bands for next year s event. We welcome you to give us a call and place your request for someone that will benefit from a shawl. It is a beautiful gesture in demonstrating your love, and support for them from SFC. The blessing of the shawls occurs on the third Sunday of the month at the 8:00am Mass. Please call or Rebecca Valverde for your request. We look forward to hearing from you. Special Collection / Next week Next week, our parish will take up a collection for the Solidarity Fund for the Church in Africa. While many Africans are growing in their faith, they still face the challenges of high rates of poverty and unemployment, illiteracy, and poor education. The solidarity fund supports essential pastoral projects across the continent that nourish the people of this young and vibrant Church. Please give generously in next week s collection. The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is an opportunity of education and spiritual formation for those seeking to complete their initiation into the Catholic Christian faith through the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and First Holy Communion. Christian Initiation is a beautiful process that merges the work already begun in you with the life of the Church. The sessions begin September 15th with an informal inquiry period; Tuesday nights from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the Parish Center living. 4 A Little Perspective If the heat gets to you today, just remember It isn t 120 degrees. We re not 5700 miles from home. We re not dressed in full uniform. We re not carrying 70+ pounds of gear. And there is little chance that we ll drive over a bomb today. Thanks to all who serve. Contact Lidia at for further information or by at LFiandeiro@dsj.org THE PROPHETS CLASS The newest Scripture Study program has just been released and is entitled THE PROPHETS, Messengers of God s Mercy. It features Hosea, Jonah, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, and Daniel. This video-based, small group discussion class includes some home preparation. It is a 10 week class on Monday nights starting September 21st at 7:15 PM in Essig Hall (big gym). No previous study is required. Registration must be completed by Wednesday, August 5th. Go online for a Registration form at HeartsofLove.biz or call for a form to be sent to you at (408) RELIGIOUS EDUCATION Religious Education is looking for three people to teach Catechism to grades 3, 4, and 6 on Wednesday afternoon 5:00pm to 6:15pm from October 7th to May 11th. Everyone will have training and guidance before starting. Please me at Jschenck@sfcschool.org for details. Pray about it and think about passing on the Catholic Faith Traditions to the next generation. More details and permission slips to follow! We are also looking for chaperones for the following dates, so please contact Mrs. Schenck if you are interested! Every teen (grades 8-12) must have a signed permission slip to participate. SUNDAY, AUGUST 9 / TODAY! - CAMBRIAN BOWL Parish Center/Cambrian bowl/parish center from 2:00-5:00pm. Meet at the parish center then walk to Cambrian bowl for a few hours of fun.
