If you want to be happy, practice compassion. - Dalai Lama Hospitality here at St. Frances We have headed into the 3rd week with the 15 women that we are hosting here at St. Frances Cabrini. All the volunteers, all the help with Time, Talent and Treasure, has allowed us to step up to plate and show what this parish and school community are capable of. Compassion! No doubt, many of us know the value of helping others. Compassion involves looking beyond one s own life and plight and seeing how best to lighten the load of others. These women are not looking for a handout, rather, a hand-up, a place to rest and re-group. Some of these women have jobs, others are looking. Seven days a week, they are up at 5:30am and after sitting down to a delicious breakfast, with homemade lunches in hand they leave to face the day, either to work or to look for work. There are warming centers to rest at, should they need it. They know that another delicious meal will be waiting when they return at 7pm. These women are determined and we hope, with our ability to give them what they might not otherwise have - a safe and stable place to rest after a long day, that they will leave one step closer to their goals. To volunteer, see last page. A message from Bishop McGrath Who would believe what we have heard? To whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed? (Isaiah 53:1) Dear Brothers and Sisters, Who could believe what the first disciples reported? Those who were witnesses to the Lord s Death were also the first to encounter the Risen Christ. Mary Magdalene met him in the garden; the Apostles, in the Upper Room; He appeared to Cleopas and his companion on the road to Emmaus. Even in our time, the Good News that the Lord is risen continues to expand our imaginations, to fuel our faith and to offer hope to those who despair. While death may, at times, seem to be all around us, the promise of Resurrection transforms the fabric of human existence. Indeed, we are made for God, who is our beginning and our end, the Author of life and the fulfillment of all that we hope. In this Year of Mercy, we reflect more deeply on the mercy of God. In announcing the Jubilee Year, Pope Francis wrote this: Jesus Christ is the face of the Father s mercy. These words might well sum up the mystery of the Christian faith. Like those first witnesses of the Resurrection, we who have received God s mercy are sent to be that same mercy to others. As we near our celebration of the Sacred Triduum, I pray that you will experience the love that flows from the Crucified One who rose on the Third Day. SFCabrini Helping Others (We need you too) We still need your help to support our guests and are still seeking volunteers for a variety of services we extend to these women. To offset the costs of hosting our 15 guests, gift cards such as Costco, Target, Smart & Final will be needed and greatly appreciated! This is what Time and Talent is all about! 4 ICF POLENTA DINNER/ DANCE ADVENTURES OF PINOCCHIO SATURDAY, APRIL The Italian Catholic Federation is holding its annual polenta dinner/dance on Saturday April 16 at 6 PM in Essig Hall. Dinner will be polenta and sausage, salad, garlic bread, dessert and coffee; there will also be a no host bar. As always, there will be door prizes and raffle baskets. Tickets are $30 for adults, Children 12 to 7 $12.50, 6 and under are free. For more information contact Chris & Ann Aguilar, aguilarbus@yahoo.com or Religious Education Several weeks ago at St. Joseph Cathedral Basilica the annual Catholic Religious Recognition Ceremony was held for all Catholic Boy Scout and Girl Scout organizations. Father Paul Soukup and Msgr. Fran Cilia presented the medals to the scouts who earned religious emblems in the Catholic faith. Music for the prayer service was again, our own talented Donnelly Family. Congratulations are in order for our Cub Scouts: Samuel Burpee and Luke Lajeunesse for the "Parvuli Dei" (Children of God) award; and Boy Scouts Zachary Burpee, Eric Ellison, and SFC 8th grader, Angelo Resayo, who earned the "Ad Altare Dei (To the Altar of God) award based on the seven Sacraments. Counselor appreciation certificates were given to Kirsten Burpee, Catherine Murphy and Joan Schenck for the months of volunteering to teach the scouts. One of the highlights is the selection of Catholic adult awards given to deserving adult scout leaders selected by their peers. "The Bronze Pelican" award ( the pelican is known for nurturing the young) recognizes an adult who has been of service and support to Catholic youth in scouting programs for their contribution to their spiritual development and other service efforts. This year Mrs. Catherine Murphy was a recipient of this local scouting award for her mentoring girl scouts and boy scouts over the years, and teaching the religious emblems. Catherine is a tireless leader dedicated to serving Catholic youth to serve God and Duty to God both in scouting circles and currently serving with BSA Troop 390. Parishioners, Catherine and Stephen, are the proud parents of former scouts and now college young adults, Niamh and Christopher (Eagle Scout 2015). Congratulations, Catherine! Lost and Found Remember to check around you in your pew for any items that you may have left behind. We have a Lost and Found just inside (to the left of) the iron gate where the library is at the back of the church. There are many items that get left and are never retrieved.
