Wilfredo Manrique = WM TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Most languages take the name for this fifty-day season from the Lord's Passover: Pasqua in Italian, Pâques in French, Paach in Dutch, Pascha in Greek and Russian. English has a much newer name, the name of a pagan goddess, Eoster. For centuries before Christianity took hold, in both Germany and Britain the spring equinox was dedicated to her and the concepts of fertility and rebirth. She was said to be a playful spirit, following the Sun King's chariot, and ending the reign of winter. She had a magical companion, a rabbit who hid eggs in the fields to coax plants and animals to rebirth. It was believed that Eoster once came across a bird with broken wings and saved it by turning it into a rabbit--an egglaying rabbit at that! Although they were baptized, most people didn't take to the new Latin name (Pascha Domini) too easily, and kept calling the spring equinox by the old accustomed name. Yet it's no exaggeration to say that humanity owes its life to farmers who care for the world's crops and livestock. This week's scriptures remind us that Jesus was as rejected as a shepherd, a farm boy, yet we owe our very lives to him. In this Sunday's reading from the Acts of the Apostles Peter tells the people that salvation comes through Jesus Christ, the one who was rejected. In John's letter we hear that we have become God's beloved children through Jesus, whom the world did not know. Lastly, in the Gospel Jesus describes himself as the Good Shepherd who "lays down his life for the sheep" (John 10:11). Last Sunday, we had the privilege of welcoming 14 new families to our St. Frances Cabrini church and school community. Thank you to the SFC 7th graders who helped with the crafts table for the kids. Pam Ellis, Alicia Morales, Maile Figone along with some of the fellas in the Men s Club and on the Parish Council, presented a delicious breakfast. We love welcoming our new families and we re glad you re here!

Thursday s hours of closure will be the same as Tuesday s hours. See next page for these hours. MOVIE NIGHT Saturday, April 28th at 6 pm, the parish is having a Movie Night in Essig Hall. The movie is Mary of Nazareth. Excellent movie. The cost is $5.00 per person. $20.00 per family of 4 or more. Dinner will be included in the price, with popcorn for the movie or course! Tickets will be on sale after all the Masses this weekend or in the office from Jean or Sue. Gabriel or Fr. Michael. When the Sacrament of Anoin ng of the Sick is given, the hoped-for effect is that, if it be God's will, the person be physically healed of illness. But even if there is no physical healing, the primary effect of the Sacrament is a spiritual healing by which the sick person receives the Holy Spirit's gi of peace and courage to deal with the difficul es that accompany serious illness or the frailty of old age. Ed., Canyon Heights Academy, and Home- Schooled students will meet in the church at 5:00pm for the 10:00 a.m. FHC Mass on Saturday, May 5th and at 6:00 pm, Wednesday, May 2nd for the 12:00 pm Mass. In order to have a successful practice, please be on time! (No siblings please.) Details were explained with the given handouts to everyone who attended the mandatory meeting on March 8th. If you did not attend this meeting, please ask your child s teacher for the handouts. Saturday, May 5th: First Holy Communion Masses at 10:00am and 12:00pm. Please arrive at your assigned classroom ½ hour before to sign in your child for their mass. Mass. Every child must have received their Sacrament of Reconciliation either at SFC Church or Canyon Heights Chapel before their First Holy Communion. June 11th to June 15th will be the 22nd annual incredible Diocese of San Jose Youth Retreat for grades 8th to 12th up in Zepher Cove on Lake Tahoe. This year s theme is Stand by Me, and its first come, first serve to sign up and the deadline is May 4th. Just go to the DSJ website and sign up today, don t wait, you will be glad you did! The cost is $490. Per person you can pay with PayPal or make a partial payment of $245. And send a check to the DSJ youth ministry offices. Scholarships are available. Questions? This year for the first time ever we will have a middle school DSJ retreat in the Alliance Redwoods Retreat Center in Occidental, CA from August 6th to the 8th. The theme is Venture - Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid! is open to all current students in grades 5th, 6th and 7th school year, and will cost $290, scholarships are available.
