Four times widowed, she was setting off on a pilgrimage, notably without number five. The church door is a curious detail, pointing to the fourteenth-century wedding custom of marrying on the porch of the parish church. The goal was to give maximum publicity to the consent of the groom and bride, and so consent was moved from the bride s home to a public venue. The priest would stand in the doorway and begin by sprinkling the couple with holy water. He needed to make sure they weren t too closely related and give them some instruction. He would direct the groom to pay the bride s family a dowry, and then announce the monetary amounts to the interested passersby. Only then would the guests enter the church for the wedding Mass, during which the bride and groom would hold lighted candles. The gradual move from home to church and the shift from the bride s father to the priest s authority helped to protect the freedom of brides who weren t quite as confident as the Wife of Bath. Rev. We wait in joyful expectation for the coming of our Lord as King. But what we are told to expect and rejoice over is a meek and humble king, riding on an ass. Not horses or chariots of the great and mighty, but a humble beast carries the Ruler whose dominion stretches from the River to the ends of the earth (Zechariah 9:10). This King comes to banish the tools of the warrior and bring peace. No wonder that a weary world rejoices and gives thanks to God! Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. Anonymous TALK ON ECUMENISM On Saturday, November 18, 2017, Father Jose Rubio will be here at the Chancery to offer us a talk on Ecumenism: How to Maintain a Catholic Identity in a Multi-Cultural, Multi-Religious World. This is being offered to the detention volunteers but others from the parishes are most welcome to attend. Father Rubio is an expert on this topic in this diocese and beyond. Parents entrusted their children to us who came faithfully on Wednesday evenings from last October through this May. We are blessed with having such faith filled Catechists: Cookie Gelardi, Trang Tran, Melissa Shafer, Joann Allegretti, Matt Shafer, Donna Tkach, Margie Schillage, Erin Donnelly, Rosemary Janis, Linda Brady, Jancy Vincent and Jennifer Donnelly. The loss of Fr. Bob Kiefer and Mrs. Kathleen Madigan was deeply felt at the retreat this year and we continue to pray for them. All Sacrament of Confirmation & First Holy Communion certificates are ready to be picked up. Come join me any Sunday in the month of Juky for the 9:30am Mass (July 2, 9, 16 and 23) in the choir section to receive your certificate.
