Kyle Fay/Megan Schaeffer September 15, :00 pm-egg Harbor Alpha ALPHA COMMENTS Below are some of the comments offered by some who have recently completed the Alpha Session. I joined the Alpha program to be more involved in my parish. What I found and experienced was a more intimate relationship with God, with all His wonders and Love for us! And truly the importance of reading the Bible, His words! So I joined to give but Alpha gave more to me than I could have imagined! Cindy Passuntino Participating in Alpha was a good experience. It was not only spiritually rewarding but a fun experience with camaraderie and good food! Being able to share faith questions in an accepting environment was reassuring as well as enlightening. No pressure, no judgment...the goal is to get out of it what you want and need. The videos are very well done and the fact that it is ecumenical is wonderful. I highly recommend it. Lynn Polacek At first I wondered-why do we need Alpha? Alpha surprised me with new energy and spirit. Extraordinary videos filmed in world cities. A broad perspective-not just "Catholic." Compelling stories that inspire and grab us. Small group sharing with men and women helps us go deeper in our faith. And we get to eat together before each session begins. Come and see! Alpha will be a gift to yourself! Lee LeVoy I recently had opportunity to read a reflection about Jesus always asking people "what do you ask of me? The author took this as a mechanism Jesus used to assist the petitioner in discerning what was REALLY in his/her heart not just a surface desire. This is how the ALPHA discussions struck me. No right or wrong answers, just honest discussion that gave such opportunity for participants to stretch their individual viewpoints. The facilitators' questions were open ended and stimulated thoughtful exchange of ideas. A wonderful faith-sharing and community building opportunity! Alice Stollenwerk Health & Wellness NOTES FROM THE NURSE: FOODS YOU SHOULD BE EATING IN THE FALL Fall is a good time to enjoy the fruits of the earth called root vegetables. These veggies include carrots, beets, potatoes, sweet potatoes, turnips, parsnips, onions, garlic and rutabagas. Cabbage and squash are also packed with dietary fiber and essential nutrients. Research is showing their protective effect against heart disease, diabetes, cancer and arthritis. Fresh foods have been proven to be more effective for your health than taking supplements. Beets contain folate and manganese in addition to fiber. Carrots provide potassium, iron, Vitamin B6 and Beta Carotene (which the body converts to Vitamin A) and is a wonderful anti-inflammatory. Potatoes have gotten a bad rap as fattening, but it isn t the potato at fault, it is the stuff you add to it i.e.; butter, sour cream, mayo, gravy etc. Potatoes are rich in Vitamin B6 and C, Potassium and Iron and even have some protein. Sweet potatoes, in addition to the above, contain Vitamin E and are rich in Beta Carotene as well as fiber. Garlic not only provides you with Vitamin B6 and C, but also manganese and selenium, essential nutrients not found in many foods. Squash comes in assorted shapes and colors and packs a good nutritional punch. Cabbage packs fiber as well as Vitamins C and K and manganese. And don t forget apples: delivering Vitamin C, A and B6 as well as a hefty dose of fiber. Chewing an apple also stimulates saliva to help prevent tooth decay. But go easy on the pie and enjoy your apples raw. So add some fall veggies to your fall menu and gain the health benefits while enjoying the delicious flavors. Try roasting with a little extra virgin olive oil and some seasoning to bring out the sweetness.

4 5 Twenty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time-August 26, 2018 Worship and Music Column To Whom Would I Go? In our first reading today, Joshua challenged all of the Israelite leaders to make a decision. He called on them to decide whom they would serve. Would they choose the gods of the past whom their forefathers worshiped or would they choose the Lord, God who brought them out of the land of Egypt? It was a straight forward question and one that commanded a choice be made. Who are the other gods in our lives? What do we choose to put in front of our Lord who suffered and died for our salvation? These gods can be wealth, fame or even just our own needs and wants which might take center stage. Things of this world are not bad but when they become more important than God, when we spend more time accumulating things or worrying about our own needs above loving God and others then God is not first in our lives. Can you respond the way many of the Israelites did? As far as me and my household, we will serve the Lord. In the gospel, many of Jesus followers left when the going got tough. So he turned to his apostles and asked, Do you also want to leave? Peter knew at that moment that Jesus loved him and wanted him to stay. It was Peter who answered his question with a question. He said, Master, to whom should we go? We have come to believe and know you are the Holy One of God. This gospel always reminds me of a dark time when I felt forsaken by God. After numerous prayers from myself and many others, I did not receive the answer I wanted. I was devastated and more, I was very angry with God. I felt abandoned. I knew God could take this anger but I could not let go for a while. And then, I realized that if I did not have my God, to whom could I go? Once again, I learned to trust and know that God is there and does hear my prayers. Sometimes that trust and faith is challenged but I can now firmly say, I have come to believe and know you are the Holy one of God. And most importantly that God wants me to say, Yes, I will stay None of this is easy, but it is what leads us to faith and eternal life. Even when our prayers are not answered the way we might want them to be in the time we want them to be answered, God is with us, loving us and calling us to Him. Adults wishing to be baptized, or baptized adults wishing to be confirmed, the RCIA program is available. Reconciliation God s great mercy is something to be celebrated. Ritually we Catholics experience God s unconditional love in the sacrament of reconciliation. Our pastor is available for this sacrament on the 1st Thursday of the month from 5:00-6:00 pm at our Baileys Harbor site (except holidays) and by appointment. Sacrament of Matrimony A faith-filled wedding is a joyful time for the couple and the parish. Our parish wants to have all weddings here be the best possible. The couple must meet with the pastor before a date can be reserved. Please contact the parish office at least 12 months in advance to begin preparation. Ministry to the Sick Everyone needs extra compassion and care when his or her health is not at its best. As a parish, we try to meet that need. Communal anointing Masses take place twice yearly, with individual anointing done when requested. Parishioners in the hospital, nursing home or other institution are encouraged to notify the office to arrange for visits or communion. 8 Dear Fellow Parishioners of Stella Maris Parish, Last week in my homily; I addressed the issue of the scandal that has plagued the church for a while in the sexual abuse of minors and its cover up by the hierarchy, I read the letter from the bishop (which is also in the bulletin this week) and put the statements of the bishop and the head of the bishop s conference in the bulletin. Although I think that all those gestures are good, I still felt a need to write something in the bulletin as well. Here are my thoughts. We must begin where we are. Everyone of us has feelings, thoughts and experiences running through us concerning this situation. We must honor them and be with them as we learn to deal with them and put them to positive use. Every experience can help us to grow an become better if we process it well psychologically and spiritually. Experiences hurt us if we hold on to them, do not process them and generally allow them to eat away at us from within. I propose that we do what is healthy, good and growth filled alone and together. As a church we need to continue to listen to, love and help any victim of sexual (verbal or physical) abuse. Any person who experiences abuse, first must be heard. Being hurt and then ignored is extremely painful. Healing begins when one tells one s story. After the story is told, a victim can become a survivor if s/he experiences caring, compassionate and support from us. We need to be the ones who treat them that way as they tell their story. From the beginning to the end, we need to love them as unconditionally as we can while promising them that they are safe, will survive and become better. A big part of the help that can be offered is helping them to receive the best professional help offered legally, psychologically and spiritually. We do have the resources for that and can do that well. The church needs to become more in touch with and better at dealing with power which is at the heart of the problem. It is an issue for all human communities, but it is our time to face it and deal with it. Power is good when it is used to serve the common good, especially helping the weak and vulnerable to do well. This message is deep within the scriptures, both the old and new testaments but it is forgotten because of original sin and our selfcentered ways. The best way to check power is to have checks and balances on what we can do as human beings. The Catholic Church needs to change canon law to make sure that there is more lay oversight of almost everything at every level of the church except for matters of faith and morals. Even in these matters, more consultation would be good. I am not comfortable as pastor, without making sure that I consult as much as possible, while surrendering decisions that affect the whole parish as much as possible, to councils and committees. This kind of accountability will help us to be better with keeping all problematic priests and church personnel from vulnerable people while keeping priests more humble. The other issue which greatly needs rethinking and reform is our whole approach to sexuality. Too often we still have such a negative attitude which causes us to hide our thoughts, feelings and experiences instead of allowing them to help us to grow into the best people we can be in relationship. I know that that is a big problem in the priesthood, but it is also a problem in marriage and other aspects of life from what I have experienced. This scandal has much to do with secrecy and hypocrisy which stem from a need to be perfect instead of authentic, prideful instead of holy, breaking of the first commandment in trying to be God instead of allowing God to help us to be the best that we can be. The studies that were done about the causes of the problem showed that a lack of psycho sexual development was a big part of the problem. Better formation in the seminary can help. Ultimately, one must wonder if making celibacy optional would help solve the problem. One also must wonder if opening the priesthood so that anyone who is Catholic whatever their background is eligible would not help as well. The priest should look like anyone else in the pews as Jesus disciples did so that they are able to truly show the incarnation in which Jesus embraced every aspect of our human condition. We can then all become fully one with God in this life and the next. Ultimately, sexuality with a healthier view and better practice would also eliminate power issues which help to cause the problems of abuse. With all these thoughts in mind, I invite anyone who has a need to join me this Thursday night at 6 pm in Fish Creek. We will listen to each other and our feelings, thoughts and experiences as well. After listening, we will pray for ourselves and everyone who is affected by this situation. As a person in power, I just want you to know, I am sorry and ask for forgiveness for anything I may have done to hurt anyone in any way. Thanks for listening, caring & your prayers.
