2 2 Welcome to Stella Maris in Baileys Harbor, Egg Harbor, Fish Creek, Jacksonport, Sister Bay & Washington Island The ascension was a very challenging experience for the original disciples of Jesus as it also is for us. Just as they were challenged to carry on the mission of Jesus Christ after His physical presence with them ended, so we are challenged to live the mission of Jesus Christ after our baptisms. Although before Pentecost the disciples experienced the risen Lord primarily through a series of appearances, Jesus was and is always God and therefore consistently present to all people at all times. In the incarnation, Jesus chose to fully become a part of our human condition but never let go of His divine condition. How the incarnation happened and what it means are impossible for us to fully understand. What we understand is that the appearances of the Risen Lord were only that manifestations of Jesus so that the disciples could experience and learn from Him while growing in their faith with his help. With that in mind, the ascension was not the time that Jesus disappeared into the heavens never to be seen again. It was just the end of the time for the disciples formation after the resurrection. Jesus was Dear Fellow Parishioners still present but in a different way through the power of the Holy Spirit. He would also appear to other people such as Paul as He had to the other disciples. The ascension was the beginning of the time that the disciples were on their own to live what Jesus had taught them. They were commissioned to preach the good news of the kingdom individually but also together as they formed a community of people cooperating with the Holy Spirit s help. It was not an easy project but with Jesus formation before the ascension and the help of the Holy Spirit after Pentecost, they had everything they needed to be his disciples long into the future. They had to not only realize that in their minds, but embrace it in their hearts while their spirits moved them forward to do it. Stepping forward to take our rightful and necessary place within salvation history is not easy. We often must be nudged if not pushed to be the disciple that we are meant to be. Within the Lord and his grace, we must find the way to live into the experience of the ascension by finding the courage of our convictions and the inspiration and motivation to preach the good news and build the kingdom of God. Although it is very difficult as the disciples themselves found, it is important to come in touch with the way that we feel with the absence of the Jesus Christ. It is only that experience that can motivate us to understand the importance of what we need to do to build the kingdom of God. Another helpful motivation is to imagine what the Kingdom of God is supposed to be. Imagine the whole world in peace and harmony, working the way that God created it to be. Imagine all human being working for justice, mercy and peace so all people can fully live their lives the way they were meant to be. Imagine the way that Jesus impacted the world when He was physical present. He loved, forgave, reconciled, healed, brought back to life, listened, fed the hungry and released captives. Can we find the desire to affect the world in that way with Jesus help? In Christ s love, Fr. Dave Ruby, Pastor CARE 24/7 Food Pantry Our Stella Maris CARE 24/7 Food Pantry received the food donations from the recent letter carrier drive in the Fish Creek, Egg Harbor and Baileys Harbor communities. On behalf of all of those less fortunate that benefit from our pantry, thank you so much to all those who donated food items. The pantry, located at our Fish Creek site at the kitchen entrance of the church, remains unlocked so northern Door residents in need can help themselves to canned goods, toiletries and other non-perishable foods stocked in that entryway. Food and financial donations are always appreciated. Non-perishable foods for the pantry can be left in the collection bins at the Fish Creek and Baileys Harbor sites. Financial donations placed in an envelope addressed to the CARE 24/7 Food Pantry can be dropped in the mass collection basket. St. Mary of the Lake Altar and Rosary Sodality The Sodality was established about the time the first St. Mary of the Lake was built in the later 1800 s. The Ladies group adopted a mission of maintaining the altar, linens, altar and exterior flowers and to provide a dinner for families after funeral services at Baileys Harbor s young parish. We are now part of Stella Maris Parish and continue to carry out our mission at the Baileys Harbor site. All of these things require time and talent from our members as well as monetary contributions. We encourage parishioners in the area to join our Sodality. We meet once a month from May to January and really need new members to carry on our mission. Our annual dues are minimal at $5.00 and a dish to pass and a little help at parishioners funerals held at Stella Maris Parish, Baileys Harbor. Currently we are working on plantings for the front of church as well as the Mary Garden on the South Lawn of the Baileys Harbor site and the grottos at St Mary of The Lake Cemetery. If you would like to make a donation for flowers in the gardens and urns, please pick up an envelope at the church entrance and return it next week. Your in Memoriam will be recorded on a plant stake in the garden and remembered in our Tuesday Rosary. Please contact Kriss Schorer, President, if you have any questions. To sign up to receive this short 3-minute touching and impactful video go to UPCOMING MISSION TRIPS- June 20, we will spend the day at the Micah Center, the St John Shelter s daytime resource center in Green Bay, where we will do cleaning, organizing and light yard work as we learn about the many services available to those in need. Sept , we will travel to Su Casa Catholic Worker House in Chicago, a place of healing and hope for displaced Hispanic families. As we work and eat alongside the residents and workers and participate in the daily work of maintaining the house, we will learn more about immigration, poverty and the Catholic Worker movement. Feed My People was begun in 1982 to help those in need of food. On average, 75 households are assisted each month. In addition to the food donations, the agency spends $20,000 per year to purchase food items. Our donation of $1,000 was used for this.

Parish Life & Upcoming Events Ascension of the Lord May 28, OUR SAINT VINCENT de PAUL CHAPTER has had a very busy winter, making over 60 calls in the past four months. We have helped with heating bills, food, rent, car repairs, prescription medication and referrals for longer term help. Our funds are low. We appreciate any help you might be able to send us. Just drop an envelope in the collection basket or at the office, marked Saint Vincent de Paul. Keep us in your prayers and know you are helping us help those in need here in Door County. Thank you! EXPERTISE NEEDED: We are looking for someone to help us evaluate our Wi-Fi access at each of our sites. Depending on the site or even location within a site we are on a continuum of no access-to some-to good. With so many of our committee members in different locations and travelling, we need to have good access to make use of electronic access to meetings. If you have some expertise in this area and can help recommend how to improve our situation we need your advice. Also, if you have good EXCEL skills, we need some assistance with putting our annual report together. If you could help in either of these areas, please call the office. We will be forever grateful!

4 5 Ascension of the Lord-May 28, 2017 Worship and Music Column Welcome to all who worship with us at Stella Maris Parish! In order to fully participate in our liturgy, please know that our hymns are posted on the hymn boards and are found in our hymnbooks or in our blue worship guide. The Mass we are singing is found in the blue worship guide and the revised psalms are found in the white psalm guides. The liturgy this weekend is the Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord. Our diocese is one in the U.S. that transfers this liturgy to be celebrated on a Sunday (rather than on a Thursday). That is why our liturgy this weekend is that of the Ascension and not the liturgy of the Seventh Sunday of Easter. This weekend also marks the last weekend we will see our parishioner, Ryan Miller s stunning banner for the liturgical Easter season. Next weekend is Pentecost which ends the liturgical Easter Season; Ryan s Pentecost banner will grace all our parish churches next weekend. As we are welcoming so many visitors to our Masses this weekend, I thought repeating Ryan s thoughts on the Easter banner he designed would be of great benefit for us all. Please keep in mind his thoughts as you gaze upon the vibrant yellow and orange banner: With spring comes Easter, a time of rebirth. New life is celebrated, particularly by flowers. After a harsh winter they rise anew, as if from the dead, from the darkness of the ground to the light above. One flower this season came to mind as an obvious choice to represent the Three Days. Originating at the center and extending outwards, I was able to contour a three-petaled trillium flower with one continuous, concentric loop. I interpreted this as the cycle of life, encompassing birth, death and rebirth. This perennial path delineates and revolves around a central cross. Essentially, it is an Easter Triduum trillium. Ryan Miller As you drive around Door County this weekend and view the majesty of the trilliums in full bloom, we remember the banner, the hope in the Resurrection, the hope in the Ascension and Jesus words in Matthew s Gospel this weekend: And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age. Adult Initiation The Catholic Church is always enriched whenever any adult chooses to be Catholic. Adults wishing to be baptized, or baptized adults wishing to be confirmed, the RCIA program is available. Reconciliation God s great mercy is something to be celebrated. Ritually we Catholics experience God s unconditional love in the sacrament of reconciliation. Our pastor is available for this sacrament on the 1st Thursday of the month from 5:00-6:00 pm at our Baileys Harbor site (except holidays) and by appointment. Sacrament of Matrimony A faith-filled wedding is a joyful time for the couple and the parish. Our parish wants to have all weddings here be the best possible. The couple must meet with the pastor before a date can be reserved. Please contact the parish office at least 12 months in advance to begin preparation. Ministry to the Sick Everyone needs extra compassion and care when his or her health is not at its best. As a parish, we try to meet that need. Communal anointing Masses take place twice yearly, with individual anointing done when requested. Parishioners in the hospital, nursing home or other institution are encouraged to notify the office to arrange for visits or communion.
