2 2 Welcome to Stella Maris in Baileys Harbor, Egg Harbor, Fish Creek, Jacksonport, Sister Bay & Washington Island While I was on vacation recently, I had supper with a family who has connections to our parish. We had a nice evening together. The father of the family talked to me about his faith and how it has become more important to him. One of the sacraments that he is finding very helpful these days is the sacrament of reconciliation. He told me that it is important for him to go monthly and now that his son has received that sacrament before his first communion, he brings him along as well. It is a good practice for him to share with his son as he provides a good example in doing it. I was very inspired by his example. He also lamented the fact that even though he has been Catholic all his life (he is 41 years old) and attended Catholic grade school and high school, he did not hear much encouragement from his teachers or priests to attend the sacrament. He felt bad about that and wished that he would have been better at regularly receiving this sacrament from when he was younger. I did tell him that I encourage people every week to participate in the sacrament Dear Fellow Parishioners by offering to be available whenever anyone needs the sacrament or desires it for their spiritual growth but that I do not find too many people who come forward to receive the grace of the sacrament. We both lamented how people do not understand the power of sin in their lives any more even if they do acknowledge it at all. There is a pervasive sense that sin in not real or at least something that it is something that can be ignored as much one wants to do so. That situation makes me feel bad because I know not only in theory but in practice how powerful the sacrament can be in people s lives. It is a key component of spiritual growth. Holding ourselves accountable for what we do and how we choose to live our lives makes a great difference. That is why I recommended it strongly in our stewardship message this year just as I recommended the prayer partner experience. In both cases, contrary to what some people may think, I was not coming up with new ways to torture people but better ways to help people to intentionally work on their spiritual lives with the support and encouragement of the church sacramentally and relationally. It is interesting that we live in a time when there are more young people who are becoming regular in their reception of the sacrament of reconciliation as well their utilization of partnerships which help them to grow in their faith. They are actually showing those of us who are not as young yet new ways of being better disciples. It is difficult for us older people to admit that we may not know everything and that what they are doing is more in line with the church s history than those of us who choose to form our faith totally on our own (which usually means not much happens.). I think that we all need to continually ask ourselves if we are doing enough to grow in our faith which does not always mean doing more. It means that I am intentionally growing in my relationship with Jesus Christ by prayer and the support of the church. In Christ s love, Fr. Dave Ruby, Pastor Adult Faith Formation Your adult Faith Formation Team is calling all disciples on a journey (that s you) to join us in one or more opportunities to grow in your faith, learn something new or simply share prayer with a partner or with our parish. Our world needs prayer and whom better than us disciples to offer this to our God. Come and join our pastor and fellow parishioners in an hour of silent prayer for our parish, our country, those devastated by natural disasters, for peace and for your own special intentions. Please see the schedule for the upcoming month at the end of this column. If you can only come once or more often, if you can stay for the entire hour or just a bit, please join us. Speaking of prayer our Prayer Partners are off and running. We had a great session to introduce the topic, provide some ideas and suggest some resources. We hope all of the partners are growing in their prayer life through this effort. We will be meeting again and inviting others in a few months. Our book club is scheduled to meet Tuesday, November 7 in Sister Bay. The November read is The Long Loneliness: The Autobiography of the Legendary Catholic Social Activist by Dorothy Day. In the book Day recounts her remarkable journey from the Greenwich Village political and literary scene of the 1920 s through her conversion to Catholicism and her lifelong struggle to help bring about the kind of society where it is easier to be good. Christian Service & Responsibility May our attitude be gentle and humble, attentive to caring for the poor. Tweet from Pope Francis CAN YOU FILL A BOX? Share the joy of Christmas with needy children around the world. Box of Joy is a Cross Catholic Outreach program, which replaces the Operation Christmas Child shoebox project of Samaritan s Purse. By filling a shoebox with small toys, clothing, hygiene items and school supplies you can share God s love in a tangible way. Next week there will be brochures in the pews, which will give ideas and tips about what is acceptable and how to pack the shoebox. Filled shoeboxes or donations of items for the boxes can be placed in the main entry collection bins from October 7 through November 5. Shipping per box is $9.00. Empty boxes will be available. RECENT MISSION TRIP Six of us recently spent 3 days at the Su Casa Catholic Worker House in Chicago, staying on site and involved in the maintenance of this 100 year old 3-story former friary. As our group cleaned, organized, did gardening and worked at their two soup kitchens, we also spent time with the three Catholic Workers currently choosing to live and work there; very inspirational young adults passionate about their Catholic faith, Dorothy Day s cause and living in community. Frieda, who started the Soup Kitchen 27 years ago again shared her story with us and left us moved and uplifted. An afternoon spent volunteering at the Chicago Food Depository that annually distributes 70 million pounds of food products throughout the Greater Chicago area was fulfilling, inspiring and fun. A quick stop to see some Chicago sights rounded out three busy, fun filled days. FOOD DONATIONS for our CARE 24/7 Food Pantry at Stella Maris can be left at our at Fish Creek and Baileys Harbor sites.

THE OCTOBER FOOD item being collected is canned vegetables for the CARE 24/7 Food Pantry, a ministry of Stella Maris. Donations can be left at the Fish Creek or Baileys Harbor sites. 40 DAYS FOR LIFE-is a community effort to end abortion through prayer, fasting and public outreach by holding peaceful vigils for 40 days consecutively in front of abortion facilities or abortion referral centers. The Fall 40 Days for Life runs September 28-Nov 6. 4 5 Twenty-Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time-October 1, 2017 Worship and Music Column Greetings fellow parishioners! This week's Worship and Music Column has been commandeered by your friendly Stella Maris Worship Commission chairperson! Kathy Sedan has been an integral part of every liturgy and service held at Stella Maris Parish for many years! She prayerfully chooses the hymns we sing in our weekly liturgies, then leads us in song with her beautiful organ accompaniments. Kathy writes each week s announcements and the petitions used in the universal prayer, communicating all that is going on to the various ministers participating in each weekend Mass. Kathy works closely with Father Dave and the Worship Commission to make sure that our special celebrations such as Reconciliation services, First Holy Communion and Confirmation, the ecumenical Docks-ology and Christian Unity prayer services and the Advent/Christmas and Lent/Holy Week/Easter seasons are both powerful and prayerful. Much of Kathy s work has been done behind the scenes as she makes sure that everything we do at Stella Maris Parish follows the edicts of the Pope and Bishop, as she oversees the various liturgical ministries and ministers and as she orders all the materials we need to offer liturgies throughout the year. And my list could go on and on! So, I d like to invite all parishioners to celebrate Kathy s many years of service and to say thank you to this humble servant of God. Adult Initiation The Catholic Church is always enriched whenever any adult chooses to be Catholic. Adults wishing to be baptized, or baptized adults wishing to be confirmed, the RCIA program is available. Reconciliation God s great mercy is something to be celebrated. Ritually we Catholics experience God s unconditional love in the sacrament of reconciliation. Our pastor is available for this sacrament on the 1st Thursday of the month from 5:00-6:00 pm at our Baileys Harbor site (except holidays) and by appointment. Sacrament of Matrimony A faith-filled wedding is a joyful time for the couple and the parish. Our parish wants to have all weddings here be the best possible. The couple must meet with the pastor before a date can be reserved. Please contact the parish office at least 12 months in advance to begin preparation. Ministry to the Sick Everyone needs extra compassion and care when his or her health is not at its best. As a parish, we try to meet that need. Communal anointing Masses take place twice yearly, with individual anointing done when requested. Parishioners in the hospital, nursing home or other institution are encouraged to notify the office to arrange for visits or communion.
