Stella Maris Mission Statement Stella Maris Catholic Parish prayerfully unites people in the love of Jesus guided by our patron, Mary. Stella Maris Vision Statement We invite all to journey as disciples. By sharing the Gospel, responding to Jesus' love and the gifts God has given us, we welcome all to grow in faith and in our parish life. 2 2 Welcome to Stella Maris in Baileys Harbor, Egg Harbor, Fish Creek, Jacksonport, Sister Bay & Washington Island New Evangelization Our Parish Vision Statement invites all to journey as disciples. In simplistic terms that means to be a follower of Jesus. Most of us would probably say we are that. But it is so much more than just saying the words, coming to Mass on Sunday and perhaps praying each day. These are good things but only the beginning of the journey to which we are called. Disciples are called to a relationship with Jesus, to trust him, to turn from sin, and to give our life to him. Once we move to this relationship and grow in our role as disciples we are called to bring new life to his church. You have probably heard the words, new evangelization. But what does that mean? And how does affect you? First, let me ask you what do you think of when you hear the word evangelization? Does it call to mind images of popular televangelists? A knock at the door from someone who asks you if you have accepted Jesus as your Lord and Savior? Maybe it becomes synonymous in your mind with sending money overseas to children who have never heard of Christ? If you are thinking any of these things, you are not alone. Evangelization in this context focuses on those who have never heard of Christ or the Gospel message. The New Evangelization however, focuses on enlivening or reproposing the faith to those already baptized (often referred to as "re-evangelization") and inviting them into a personal dynamic relationship with Jesus Christ in and through the Christian community. The word evangelization comes from the Greek euangelizomal which literally means to bring good news. The good news we are bringing to the world is not only the message of Jesus Christ but the person of Jesus Christ who desires and calls us to a personal relationship with him. To be clear the new evangelization is not new in its content since its very theme is always the one gospel given in Jesus Christ. So what is new? The audience is the already baptized, often even active Catholics, who need to discover or rediscover their relationship with Jesus. It is also new in that we proclaim Jesus and the mystery of our salvation, with new strength and confidence and enthusiasm. So the content is the same Jesus Christ, but is new in Dear Fellow Parishioners If one is a follower of Jesus Christ, a disciple, then one does have some experience of Him as one would have of any person with whom one is in relationship and anyone to whom one is dedicating one s life. We know that as a Christian, we have given our lives over to the Lord. How can we give our lives over to anyone or anything unless we know them? In the past, we often thought that we were giving ourselves over to a set of ideas, a system of beliefs or a way of doing what we are told without always knowing why. We have come to understand and appreciate that we are giving our lives to someone, the voice of someone both human and divine inviting us to the journey of a lifetime. A good way of imagining it is an adventure with a guide. The more we know and trust the guide so we can follow him and do what is good for us the better. A good guide knows what is entailed in the adventure and is good about helping us to experience it well. The question comes back to: how well to know Jesus and not as a historical person in a book or an abstract deity or a nice person that we nod to at a distance but as a compassionate, loving and kind mentor. This mentor shows us how much He cares by going ahead of us, guiding us with His experience and saving us from our natural inclinations so we can be what we are truly meant to be. Although there is no one else like that anywhere, Jesus great power, empathy and kindness can be very threatening to us and cause us to avoid really coming to know and experience him as He is. That is very problematic for anyone who is truly a Christian. Our whole modus operandi is to live in relationship with God, the father through Jesus Christ in the power of the Holy Spirit. Jesus is the face, body and the experiential presence of the invisible God. He is the way we come to know God and be a part of God s life. There really is no other way. The question is how are we trying to come to know God. It is good to start knowing Jesus with the scriptures. The problem is that reading the scriptures can be a very academic its ardor, methods and expressing. Jesus is calling you into this relationship. exercise as any study is. The mass, the sacraments and all liturgy offer us opportunities to be with Jesus through the community of believers but can also be just going through the motions. Our personal prayer can make a huge difference or it can be just words and actions that seem nice and holy. The most important part of any coming to know Jesus is doing so with the heart? When we fall in love with the person that we marry, s/he touches our hearts, moves our hearts and finds a home in our hearts or we should not marry him/ her. The same is true in a different way with any true friend. Is this happening in our relationship with Jesus Christ? Do we feel His presence with and in our hearts? Have we allowed him to touch our hearts in any way? Does Jesus have a home within my heart? If not, what am I doing about it? Health & Wellness NOTES FROM THE NURSE: HEALING PRACTICES In Christ s love, Fr. Dave Ruby, Pastor Love ought to manifest itself in deeds rather than in words. Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius How often do we say to ourselves: I wish I could do something to show this person who is hurting how much I care about him or her? Have you noticed how, when you re ill, injured, discouraged or otherwise going through a rough patch that a hug, a pat on the head or a light touch on the arm can be welcome and calming? Without diminishing the value of such calming gestures as delivery of home-prepared meals, providing transportation or care-giver respite, there are times when both donor and recipient crave a more personal interaction, a symbiosis (referring to a cooperative effort between two parties). Aroma therapy uses essential oils to improve psychological or physical well-being. Hand massage is based on the premise that we each have a life force energy flowing through us which, when low, results in stress or physical illness. Combining aroma therapy and massage seems to provide many benefits. As a result of reading, parishioner ANDREA KINSEY JAU- QUET became interested in energy work and took classes in hand massage. An artist friend introduced her to aroma therapy. Following her husband s successful treatment for cancer, she felt an urge to give back and became involved in providing this alternative treatment for patients at the oncology clinic in Sturgeon Bay. She states, It is all a rewarding gift given to me. At the next Community Health Information Program, SYMBIOTIC SURPRISE, on Sunday, September 17 at 4 pm at First Baptist Church in Sister Bay, Andrea will explain, instruct and demonstrate this alternative therapy. There may even be opportunities to practice techniques! PLEASE JOIN US!

4 5 Twenty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time-September 10, 2017 Worship and Music Column In Appreciation- Again! I was asked by the Stewardship Committee to run this column again from last year. It s been updated for this year as we continue to be blessed with so many generous and faith-filled parishioners who give of themselves to work in the Lord s vineyard at Stella Maris. So here goes. on occasion during the year, this Worship & Music column is shared with Stewardship so I m using this to remind everyone involved in worship in any way to come to the upcoming Appreciation Open House. It is sponsored by our Parish Leadership and the Stewardship Committee; however, so many of you are involved in the liturgy, this column is also an opportunity to invite you. The Appreciation Open House is on Thursday, September 21st from 6pm 8 pm at Sister Bay. Many of you provide your stewardship in so many visible ways at our liturgies: As Sacristans preparing the sacred vessels, liturgical books, wine and hosts, as Greeters and Ushers who welcome everyone with smiles, grace and dignity, as Cantors who lead all in voice and heart in song, as Readers who eloquently proclaim God s Word, as Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion who distribute the Precious Body and Blood with reverence and awe, as Musicians who provide their talents with inspiring music, as Altar Servers who respectfully assist the priest and deacon, as Choir Members who support specific liturgies with lovely harmonies, as Art & Environment ministers, who help beautify the interiors of our churches with fresh flowers and plants and the exteriors of our churches with our flower pots and flower beds, as our banner designer with inspiring colorful banners that help us prayerfully reflect on the liturgical seasons and our original Stella Maris painting artists who inspire us with their unique interpretations of our parish patron, Stella Maris, Our Lady, Star of the Sea. However, you might not be aware of all of you who provide your stewardship in non-visible ways to help with our liturgies: all who make sure our liturgical linens are washed and ironed for all our Masses (altar cloths, corporals for the altar, purificators for the chalices); all who launder and /or send to the cleaners all the liturgical vestments: the white albs and various chasubles and stoles; all who clean and change out all the votive candles (a very time-consuming task!), all who straighten-up our churches to remove excess clutter; all who are money counters; all who come to the parish office on Thursdays to help with printing projects for our worship guides / or bulletin inserts.the list goes on and on. I m sure I m forgetting many areas and many people, but I hope this column provides you with idea of how amazing all of you are as you build up God s Kingdom here at Stella Maris. So for all of you providing your stewardship in our liturgies in any way, please come to the Appreciation Open House on September 21st!
