2 2 Welcome to Stella Maris in Baileys Harbor, Egg Harbor, Fish Creek, Jacksonport, Sister Bay & Washington Island How does one take time to be with Jesus Christ? How does one take time to be with anyone? Can we be with someone and not really be with them? Can we also realize when we are not with someone and begin to be with them? Do we ask ourselves the question in our prayer about whether we are actually experiencing Jesus, spending time with him and coming to know him better or do we just do what we have always done and expect it to count as prayer and fulfill whatever God seems to want and the church expects of me? If we are still praying the same way that we prayed when we were a child then our prayer could be better. If we are still praying the same way that we were praying even a year ago, then we could be growing in our prayer and experience of God. If we never ask ourselves how our prayer can be better or more meaningful then we are not doing all that we can to have the best relationship with Jesus Christ possible. It is important to have a dominant or regular prayer style. Different personalities do better with certain styles of prayer. Faith Formation A Look Back Dear Fellow Parishioners As I write this column it is the last week of Youth Faith Formation for , I think it is often appropriate to take a look back before we begin anew. We learn from our mistakes and successes. Evaluating this past year, I am pondering how can we again make the coming year of be faith-filled and meaningful for our youth? I really do not know the complete answer to that, but I do know that through prayer and the guidance of the Holy Spirit it will be a good year for our youth. We are all disciples on a journey. We put our trust in the Lord so His will is done. We ended last year with a celebration of Our Mother, Mary. The story of our Lady's visit to Fatima was told; it was the 100th anniversary. The main message Mary told and retold to the three Fatima children in her six appearances was to pray. It is an ongoing and strong message for our youth today. On May 10th, last year we prayed the Rosary and we did this with the students acting as the beads of each decade. We stood in a circle around the beautiful Mary statue in front of the rectory and as each Hail Mary was said a child sat down in the grass. This was an interpretation of a living Rosary. We prayed the Rosary asking Mary's guidance to live in peace knowing that inner peace comes from building a strong relationship with God. We must lovingly teach our children to pray. (See pictures on front page.) So, I ask again How can we make this coming year of be faith-filled and meaningful for our youth? Our new Youth It is not good to only pray in certain ways. We should be trying new ways or at least be praying differently at different times. Different moods call for different kinds of prayer. Different life experiences can call for different types of prayer. Most Catholics are accustomed to memorized prayers which are good but not exhaustive of how to pray. The rosary is a good form of prayer but not the only way to prayer. A very good way to grow closer to Jesus and feel that one knows him better is to take time to reflect on the scriptures, especially the stories of Jesus. Much of it can be done with our head and our thoughts but again should not limited to that. We also need to ask ourselves with many of those stories, how they make us feel? If Jesus is meant to be a real person for us, he will make us angry some of the time and sad other times. We may be afraid of him or feel guilty that we are not living up to all that he wants. Another very important means of prayer is the Saint Ignatius of Loyola method of imagination. We can participate in every story of Jesus with the help of our imagination. We can try to be with Jesus as he undergoes all the different parts of his life. We can think about and feel what he did. We can also see ourselves as other people in the stories and sense what they did. What did they think? What did they feel? Would we have acted the same way that they did? Would we respond differently? What would we feel called to change in our lives? Would we follow Jesus or would it be too difficult? The important thing is to be genuine and experience what we experience and be with what is there. We should not be perfect and we should acknowledge when we find any of the experience difficult. Like any relationship, these experiences help us to know Jesus for who he really is, how we are with him and how we can be different because of Him. In Christ s love, Fr. Philippians 4:6 If you often feel anxious, the thought of talking to your Doctor about it may cause increased anxiety. But if symptoms such as excessive worrying, crippling feelings of fear or dread, panic attacks or sleepless nights are interfering with your life it is time to confide in your doctor. The following steps may ease you re getting the conversation started: Call your Doctor an anxiety disorder is a real medical condition that can improve with treatment. You are not alone. Anxiety disorders in the US affect nearly one in five adults. Make a Plan Write down your symptoms, jot down questions you may have and set a goal for your visit, such as: an answer to a specific question, a referral to a mental health specialist or a treatment plan for a symptom interfering with your ability to do your job. Go for It Even though difficult, try to speak openly and honestly with your Doctor. Begin with an explanation of what you think is going on. Making an office visit and talking with your physician is a huge stride on the road to getting better soon. (Adapted from WPISC.com)

4 5 Twenty-Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time-September 24, 2017 Worship and Music Column See you at our 9 th Annual Blessing of the Animals on Sunday, October 1 st at Fish Creek at 1:00 pm! As I write this, it s difficult to believe that our parish will be celebrating our ninth Blessing of the Animals Service in memory of St. Francis of Assisi. The years have just zoomed by! This year, we are fortunate that Fr. Art Heinze will be conducting the blessing and who knows, perhaps he will bring his dog to be blessed too! It has been so wonderful to have been a part of this tradition at Stella Maris. First begun in 2009 at our Egg Harbor church in front of the statue of St. Francis of Assisi, Fathers Dave and Birdsall and Deacon David have all blessed various pets.mostly dogs, but some cats and a chicken, thanks to Fr. Tony. It has been most endearing to see dogs in their various outfits, especially Packers sweaters. And I think the most endearing memory that stays in my mind is that of the little children wheeling their wagon with the goldfish swimming in a bowl to be blessed. Every year, we have rotated the blessing at all of our five peninsula parish sites and this year, the Blessing of the Animals is at Fish Creek. The blessing begins at 1:00 pm and there s no Packers game, so all our parish pets have no excuse not to be blessed! As in the past, we just request dogs be brought on a leash, smaller animals in carry cases and hopefully, we ll have more goldfish in bowls! Also as in past years, treats for the pets and their owners will be available immediately after the blessing. Infant Baptism The baptism of new babies and young children revitalizes our faith community. Please contact the parish office to make arrangements for baptism. Adult Initiation The Catholic Church is always enriched whenever any adult chooses to be Catholic. Adults wishing to be baptized, or baptized adults wishing to be confirmed, the RCIA program is available. Reconciliation God s great mercy is something to be celebrated. Ritually we Catholics experience God s unconditional love in the sacrament of reconciliation. Our pastor is available for this sacrament on the 1st Thursday of the month from 5:00-6:00 pm at our Baileys Harbor site (except holidays) and by appointment. Sacrament of Matrimony A faith-filled wedding is a joyful time for the couple and the parish. Our parish wants to have all weddings here be the best possible. The couple must meet with the pastor before a date can be reserved. Please contact the parish office at least 12 months in advance to begin preparation. Ministry to the Sick Everyone needs extra compassion and care when his or her health is not at its best. As a parish, we try to meet that need. Communal anointing Masses take place twice yearly, with individual anointing done when requested. Parishioners in the hospital, nursing home or other institution are encouraged to notify the office to arrange for visits or communion.
