2 Third 2 Welcome Sunday to of Stella Lent: Maris Do You in Baileys Preach Harbor, Christ Egg Crucified? Harbor, Fish Church. Creek, Jacksonport, Sister Bay & Washington Island This Sunday s Gospel from John tells the story of Jesus driving the Many descendants of the earliest Christians, who still preach and vendors and money-changers out of the Temple. The synoptic Gospels place this event after Jesus triumphant entry into Jerusalem in the shadow of the Second Temple that was destroyed in 70 A.D. by profess Christ crucified, still live in the Holy Land. They live in the week before his crucifixion, but John places this event very the Romans. All that remains of this Jewish center of worship is early in His public ministry. During Jesus time, the temple was the Temple mount, a place still holy to the Jewish people. But the the center of Jewish worship, sacrifice and national identity. This Christians in the Holy Land know that the focus of their worship is was the Second Temple, as the First Temple built by King Solomon Jesus Christ, a belief that places them in a small minority compared was destroyed in 586 B.C. by Babylonian invaders. The Second to their Jewish and Muslim neighbors. This can make life difficult Temple was built after the nation of Israel returned from their exile for these Christians as they struggle to meet such basic needs as in Babylon and was dedicated in 516 B.C. Right before the time of finding jobs, adequate housing and access to health care. Contributing to the Pontifical Good Friday Collection is one way that all of Christ, King Herod added a grand addition to the Temple. This Temple was holy to all Jews it was God s house. It no longer housed the Ark of the Covenant, which was lost when the First al and spiritual needs. The monies collected on Good Friday go to us can help the Christians in the Holy Land meet their basic materi- Temple was destroyed. The Ark of the Covenant had contained the the Franciscan Custody of the Holy Land who maintain the Holy two tablets of the Ten Commandments that were proclaimed in the Sites and multiple apostolates that support the minority Christian Old Testament reading this weekend. Jesus knew that the Temple population. Please be generous! was His Father s house and He was angered by the graft and thievery that had pervaded the temple worship and sacrifice. When the people questioned his authority to do this, He replied: Destroy this temple and in three days I will raise it up (Jn 2:19). Jesus was speaking of the future sacrifice of his own body at His crucifixion the ultimate sacrifice that reconciled the world back to right relationship with God. But, his audience did not understand that He was talking about Himself how He would soon become the center of worship and that animal sacrifices to God in the Temple would no longer be needed. St. Paul would proclaim to the Corinthians, we preach Christ crucified (1 Cor 1:23) because the sacrificed Jewish men and women pray at the ruins of the Temple Mount body of Christ was being transformed into the Body of Christ, the from the time of Christ. Faith Formation Alpha is coming! Alpha is coming! Have you heard about Alpha yet? If not, you will be hearing much more about this as the months unfold. Alpha is a video series that explores the basics of the Christian faith. Through the talks in the videos and discussions that follow, together we explore the meaning of life. Each video focuses on one question about faith and the discussion questions that follow are designed to create conversation. As people progress through the series, they also progress in their faith life and living as Christ s disciples. We are excited that we are starting this series here at Stella Maris. You will be hearing much more about this as the weeks and months unfold. Our Holy Book Club will not be meeting until May 14th due to the large number of people traveling in March and April. The books we will discuss are: the Door County Library selection, The Latehomecomer by Kao Kalia Yang and "Once in Love, Always In Love by Fr. Richard Mauthe and Adi Redzic. If you would like to join us please pick up one or both of these great reads. Or just come and listen to the conversation. Do you have a Prayer Partner? If so, you know the joy of sharing your faith and the support you can give each other. It also helps keep us on the path to our daily prayer. If you are a Prayer Partner or if you just want to know a bit more about this, please join us at our quarterly meeting. It is informal, only about an hour and an opportunity to share our experiences. Our next meeting is in Sister Bay on Tuesday, March 13 at 10:00 am. May Lent be a special time for growing in faith and love! Christian Service & Responsibility Thoughts create actions. 4 5 Third Sunday of Lent-March 4, 2018 Worship and Music Column Our Discipleship Journey In last week s column we read how it is in what we do and in what we say and in what we think, day in and day out, that we find evidence of how we are progressing along this path of discipleship and helping others along this path. So how can we progress on this discipleship journey? One way is by living out our parish s five guiding values. Welcoming and Hospitality- Plan to greet someone you don t know every time you come to mass * Look people in the eye when speaking with them * Ask others how they are doing before telling them how you are doing * Learn people s names and remember them * Ask questions to learn more about others * Tell others I m glad you came * Sit next to someone you don t know or don t know very well * Invite someone to join you at a church function. Prayer- Attend a daily mass more often * Attend a Pray with the Pastor session once each month, if not for the whole hour, then for 15 minutes * Spend five more minutes in prayer each day * Pray for Stella Maris and our journey as disciples * Sit in silence for a few minutes each day, listening to God * Say a short prayer immediately on waking in the morning * Pray a scripture passage by spending time thinking about a phrase that speaks to you and what God is saying to you through that phrase * Pray at the same time/s each day, so it becomes a habit Joy- Share with others what you are thankful for * Create a gratitude journal to recognize your blessings, then thank God each day for these blessings.* Greet everyone you meet with a smile * One day each week speak no negative words * Don t gossip * Do a kind deed without being asked * Share kind words with others Breaking the Silence- Ask someone in need if you can pray for them * Share with a friend how God has worked in your life * Think about the difference knowing Jesus has made in your life and share this with someone * Consider sharing a witness of your faith at mass; let Father know when you are ready to do this * Memorize some meaningful scripture passages and share with others Allow the Holy Spirit to Guide and Work through us- Pray daily to the Holy Spirit asking Him to work in your life * Consider new ideas, leaving the outcome to God s direction * Regularly ask yourself if you are allowing God to lead you - and being obedient to where He is leading you * Read the fruits of the Spirit in Galatians 5:22-23; pray for one fruit you would like to see increase in your life As we become intentional about the way that we live each day, we will progress on our discipleship journey and as we progress we will also help others to progress on their own discipleship journey. Loving God, I thank you for choosing me to be your disciple and for the gift of your Son, Jesus. Help me proclaim and bear witness to the Gospel by word and by deed today and every day. Open my heart to the outcast, the forgotten, the lonely, the sick and the poor. Grant me the courage to think, to choose and to live as a Christian, joyfully obedient to God.
