Stella Maris Mission Statement Stella Maris Catholic Parish prayerfully unites people in the love of Jesus guided by our patron, Mary. 2 2 Welcome to Stella Maris in Baileys Harbor, Egg Harbor, Fish Creek, Jacksonport, Sister Bay & Washington Island It is no accident that when Jesus appeared to his disciples after the resurrection, it was often in the context of a meal. Much of his public ministry before the resurrection happened at meals. Meals are normal human social events in which we not only share food but hopefully our lives. Sharing our lives means that we talk not only about how our lives happen factually but also about how they make us feel, affect our overall acceptance of ourselves while moving us into our destiny. The meals that we share with our family and friends help to shape the person that we are as well as help us to become what we are meant to be. Unfortunately, many cultures, especially those in our western heritage did not enable good meal experiences. Many of us grew up in homes that did not do much together at meals other than eat the food put before us. We especially had to avoid the topics that might be a little controversial because we did not want to risk anyone being upset. Growth involves risking something negative happening. Meals are meant to be times of not only greater personal affirmation but also deeper exploration, more growth in Faith Formation We invite all to journey as disciples. By sharing the Gospel, responding to Jesus love and the gifts God has given us, we welcome all to grow in faith and in our parish life. I hope these two sentences are very familiar to you. This is our parish Vision Statement. Just two sentences but it is where we want Stella Maris to be for all. We want all to grow in faith as we travel on our journey. Of course, there are many ways to do this; prayer, scripture reading and reflection, living the Works of Mercy and learning more about our catholic faith are just a few. The adult Faith Formation team looks for many ways to help all of us along our discipleship journey. We all need to take time to grow in our faith and strengthen our relationship as disciples of Jesus. If you Are just too busy you need this even more. You owe it to yourself to take a breath and find that time to strengthen your relationship with Jesus. The Men s Scripture Group meets on the second and fourth Thursday of the month from 9:00 am to 10:30 am in Sister Bay to reflect on scripture. All men are invited to join. The Faith Formation Team has two great events coming up this month. Please consider joining us, you will be glad you did. On Saturday May 20, a Women s Morning of Reflection will be held in Sister Bay. The theme this year is The Grace of Everyday Saints We will gather at 8:15 am and conclude at Noon. Please see the flyer insert in today s bulletin for more details. On Friday May 26, there will be an opportunity for all to hear Father Chris Manahan from the Jesuit Retreat House. Father Manahan is a great speaker and will leave us much to think about. All Men of the parish are invited to join together in the morning and Father will present on the five values of Discipleship we have been working on in our parish. All women of the parish are then invited to join the men for lunch and the afternoon session which will end by 4:00 pm. Please save the date, more information will follow. Of course, one of the most important things we can do as disciples is to pray. Ask the Holy Spirit to guide you and strengthen you on your journey to discipleship. Dear Fellow Parishioners understanding and better living into the people we meant to be. The meals in which Jesus participated during most of his ministry were wonderful experiences. For those who allowed Jesus to love them, empowerment happened so they could be all they were created to be. So many people who were weighed down by the culture which told them they were not good enough and/or by religious leaders who told them that there were not acceptable enough, experienced liberation in simply being embraced by Jesus as they were. Jesus took the time while he was eating with people to look them in the eye, listen to their hearts, hear the pain inside them and find ways to heal that pain. The healing took place as Jesus affirmed the person that they were by seeing the good inside them and helping them to feel the unconditional and perfect love of the Father through the Holy Spirit. If we truly take the time to appreciate those stories in the gospels we will see how powerfully Jesus worked in the lives of the people who attended those meals with Jesus. They all left those meals affirmed as the person they were while feeling in a powerful way the transformative power of God s love for the future. At first, the meals after the resurrection were opportunities for Jesus to heal people who had been traumatized by his own horrific suffering and painful death. The result was a greater hope for the future but was much more than that as well. The meals also proved to be times in which Jesus helped the disciples to realize why he called them in the first place. He always wanted them to lead his new movement. His mission from the very beginning was meant to transform the whole world, one person at a time by the love of God. As he connected with people in a radically new way as the one who conquered death and therefore everything evil, they could know deep down how God could work through them to help heal a hurting world. All that was left was for them to announce that good news and help build the kingdom. In Christ s love, Fr. Dave Ruby Health & Wellness NOTES FROM THE NURSE: BLADDER PROBLEMS Bladder problems such as an overactive bladder, infection or cancer are surprisingly common. Left un-addressed they can cause serious distress and disruption of your daily life. Not all doctors routinely ask about urinary function during an exam, so it may be up to you to take the first step. Some Warning Signs of a Bladder Problem: Sudden, strong urges to urinate Only able to pass small amounts of urine Urine leaks or accidents Frequent urination Trouble getting started urinating Painful or burning sensation Bloody or cloudy looking urine Possible Causes of Symptoms: The above symptoms could have a variety of different causes: Overactive bladder-sudden, strong, frequent urge to urinate Urinary Incontinence loss of control over urination Bladder Infection Caused by bacteria getting into and infecting bladder Interstitial Cystitis painful bladder syndrome Urinary Retention inability to empty bladder possibly due to bladder stones, nerve problems or other conditions Bladder Cancer-typically starts in lining of bladder Many bladder conditions have overlapping symptoms and can be caused by problems outside the bladder as well. To know for sure what you are dealing with, talk with your doctor. Don t hesitate to share what is going on. It is the necessary first step to getting you the help you need. Adapted from WPISC.com

If you have some expertise in this area and can help recommend how to improve our situation we need your advice. Also, if you have good EXCEL skills, we need some assistance with putting our annual report together. If you could help in either of these areas, please call the office. We will be forever grateful! 4 5 Fourth Sunday of Easter-May 7, 2017 Worship and Music Column Welcome to all who worship with us at Stella Maris Parish! In order to fully participate in our liturgy, please know that our hymns are posted on the hymn boards and are found in our hymnbooks or in our blue worship guide. The Mass we are singing is found in the blue worship guide and the revised psalms are found in the white psalm guides. This Fourth Sunday of Easter is also traditionally known as Good Shepherd Sunday as there are many references to Jesus being the shepherd safely guiding His sheep. During this liturgical Year A Jesus refers to himself as the gate for the sheep leading them green pastures. The Easter Liturgical Time continues until Pentecost. That is why you see the Easter Paschal Candle next to the Ambo in the sanctuary lit, along with the altar candles and the red sanctuary candle which indicates the real presence of Christ in the consecrated hosts in the tabernacle. The word Easter comes from Old English, meaning simply the East. The sun which rises in the East, bring light, warmth and hope, is a symbol for the Christian of the rising Christ, who is the true Light of the world. The Paschal Candle is a central symbol of this divine light, which is Christ it is kept near the ambo throughout Easter Time and lit for all liturgical celebrations in Easter. Also during Easter Liturgical Time, in lieu of the Penitential Rite, we have the Sprinkling Rite (which is encouraged during the entire Easter Liturgical Time). The Sprinkling Rite reminds us of our own Baptism, as, like Jesus, we have passed from the darkness of the tomb into the joy of the Resurrection and Light. Saint Peter says it best in the following passage from today s First Reading: and they asked Peter and the other apostles, "What are we to do, my brothers? Peter said to them, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. For the promise is made to you and to your children and to all those far off, whomever the Lord our God will call." He testified with many other arguments and was exhorting them, "Save yourselves from this corrupt generation. Those who accepted his message were baptized and about three thousand persons were added that day. Source: USCCB; Used with permission.
