2 2 Welcome to Stella Maris in Baileys Harbor, Egg Harbor, Fish Creek, Jacksonport, Sister Bay & Washington Island As we celebrate Pentecost, I have to admit that the Holy Spirit has always confused me. What is the Holy Spirit anyway? Why do we need Him? How does She work? Are these even the right questions to ask? We have to start with what we do know. The Holy Spirit is God and has been present from the very beginning in general but also to human beings. We did not explicitly know about the Holy Spirit until Jesus Christ himself told us about Him. She was most known in the Pentecost event. In that event, people experienced affirmation, love, inspiration, motivation, guidance and a perfect connection with God. The Holy Spirit continued the work of God which Jesus had dramatically transformed by not only founding the church but helping it become established by the blood of the martyrs. No Person of God is present without the others, so it is very difficult to totally differentiate the persons of the trinity without losing God in the process. Keeping in mind the other persons of the trinity, it is good to consider the Holy Spirit as gift to be cherished. You will meet with a small group for just one and a half hours a week for eight weeks. Please watch the bulletin for more information about how you can volunteer to help. Dear Fellow Parishioners As a gift to be cherished, the Holy Spirit should be sought always and everywhere. Perpetual pursuit is not easy though. We are constantly distracted from experiencing the Holy Spirit. The way we become more adept at encountering the Holy Spirit is prayer. Prayer attunes us to the presence of the Holy Spirit within ourselves and our world. Within prayer, we listen for the Holy Spirit deep within our hearts. Saint Augustine spoke of the Holy Spirit as the love uniting the Father and the Son in the Trinity. The Holy Spirit is also the way we are united with God, the Father. By means of the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ given to us in the love he lived through his suffering, death and resurrection, the Holy Spirit is constantly drawing us toward, bonding us with and giving us the help of the Father. Our seeking is all that is needed because it is ultimately God who does the work. That should be a great incentive on our part to do the seeking. There are times when the seeking will seem in vain but that is because of something blocking the work of God on our part. We cannot give up hope and must keep trying. Once we do feel the enlivening power of the Holy Spirit within us during our prayer, we simply need to accept it and nothing more. With God, there is so little that we need to do. That is one of the reasons why we struggle so much. With anything else in this world, we have to work and often hard for something to happen. With the Holy Spirit, it is different. The Holy Spirit wants to bless us with unique spiritual gifts and through those gifts the whole Christian community. Our inability to see those gifts and if we do see them to hide them or selfishly use them for ourselves, keeps us from opening to and accepting the help of the Holy Spirit. We not only have to be open to the Holy Spirit from God s side but also open to sharing what the Holy Spirit gives us from the human side. It is totally amazing the spiritual energy that can be generated by that total personal openness. In Christ s love, Fr. The energetic life of St Peter Canisius should demolish any stereotypes we may have of the life of a saint being dull or routine. At an early age he began a life-long practice of study, reflection, prayer and writing and became widely known for these writings, including a catechism. He visited the sick and prisoners. He implemented the decrees of the Council of Trent one year after his ordination. He taught at universities and helped establish other universities and seminaries. He was renowned as a preacher and was also a reconciler in disputes. Whether we have much to give, as St Peter Canisius or only a little to give, the important thing is that we give our all. St Peter Canisius said If you have too much to do, with God s help you will find time to do it all. FOOD DONATIONS ALWAYS APPRECIATED - Foods collected at the Fish Creek and Baileys Harbor sites is used to stock our new CARE 24/7 Food Pantry at the Fish Creek site. Food collected at the Egg Harbor and Jacksonport sites is taken to Feed My People in Sturgeon Bay. In Sister Bay, food collected at the kitchen entrance goes to the Sister Bay First Baptist Church food pantry and CYE receives the food collected at the main entrance. 4 5 Pentecost Sunday-May 15, 2016 Worship and Music Column PENTECOST Once again, the talents and stewardship of our parishioner Ryan Miller are gracing all our churches this weekend for the Solemnity of Pentecost. As you may recall, Ryan designed the striking banners for us for Advent, Lent and now for Pentecost. All designs are his original artwork which he so graciously offers to the Lord and us to support our worship experience. This Pentecost is no exception. Here s the process: I ask Ryan for a design for a specific liturgical season or liturgy as designing is his stewardship. Then I send him some preliminary thoughts and the Scripture Readings for the day. Then, the Holy Spirit works through Ryan by manifesting his wonderful designs. When he sent me the design below, I asked him to provide us his thoughts in the inspiration he received. This is what he wrote: It is certainly more abstract; my inspiration is the descending of the Holy Spirit. I interpret here the Holy Spirit as the life-giving sun - or simply a bright light - emitting rays of light, raining down...light from above descending upon and filling you up. There are also 50 rays, for 50 days. So, the 50 days of this Easter Liturgical Season, brings us from Easter and Christ s Resurrection, to His Ascension into heaven to Pentecost Sunday with the descent of the Holy Spirit. When we gaze upon this banner, the opening words of the Pentecost Sequence come to mind: Come, Holy Spirit Come! And from your celestial home shed a ray of light divine! Contact the parish office. Infant Baptism The baptism of new babies and young children revitalizes our faith community. Please contact the parish office to make arrangements for baptism. Adult Initiation The Catholic Church is always enriched whenever any adult chooses to be Catholic. Adults wishing to be baptized, or baptized adults wishing to be confirmed, the RCIA program is available. Reconciliation God s great mercy is something to be celebrated. Ritually we Catholics experience God s unconditional love in the sacrament of reconciliation. Our pastor is available for this sacrament on the 1st Thursday of the month from 5:00-6:00 pm at our Baileys Harbor site (except holidays) and by appointment. Sacrament of Matrimony A faith-filled wedding is a joyful time for the couple and the parish. Our parish wants to have all weddings here be the best possible. The couple must meet with the pastor before a date can be reserved. Please contact the parish office at least 12 months in advance to begin preparation. Ministry to the Sick Everyone needs extra compassion and care when his or her health is not at its best. As a parish, we try to meet that need. Communal anointing Masses take place twice yearly, with individual anointing done when requested. Parishioners in the hospital, nursing home or other institution are encouraged to notify the office to arrange for visits or communion.
