2 2 Welcome to Stella Maris in Baileys Harbor, Egg Harbor, Fish Creek, Jacksonport, Sister Bay & Washington Island Seminarian Collection 2018 SEMINARIAN COLLECTION KICKOFF: Providing priests for the future is all about being spiritually fed. That is why the Annual Seminarian Collection: Hope for the Future, Help the Today is so important. By now you most likely received a letter from bishop Ricken requesting your help in supporting our local seminarians. Please return your generous contribution to this collection, using the pledge card and return envelope you received in the mail. A gift of $25, $100, $250, $500 or more will help our seminarians move forward in their work of becoming missionary disciples. Every gift makes a difference. Our seminarians are our Hope for the Future, Help the Today! As a Diocese, we anticipate costs of $1,000,000 this year for tuition, room and board, health insurance, support of the Office of Vocations and the work of Fr. Mark Mleziva and Fr. Quinn Mann. Friends and followers of Jesus support one another! To make your gift today, visit On August 18-19, a seminarian, will speak at our Masses so we can hear about his calling and how we can help. FUNERAL PLANNING-You have an opportunity to help your loved ones at a difficult time. Make your funeral liturgy wishes known now by filling in some or all of the Stella Maris Funeral Planning Guide available through a link on our stellamarishpairsh.com website home page or by contacting Becky Nash at Council of Catholic Women The Council of Catholic Women (CCW) is a national organization which provides opportunities for Catholic women to come together socially, spiritually and in service to our parish and our community. We are affiliated with the Diocesan Council of Catholic Women and the National Council of Catholic Women. There are many aspects to our group including opportunities for leadership, fundraising, hospitality, prayer, spirituality, community, education, service and of course, friendship. So what does all of this mean here at Stella Maris? We meet ten times a year (not in August or December). Currently we have about 20 members and others who join us for some activities. Please think about joining us and helping us to bring more women of the parish together. In the past year we have raised funds to support our adopted senior through the Unbound organization, we have donated to Door County charities through CSR, Saint Vincent de Paul, Gibraltar School lunch program and others. We also have had a fun time and laughs at our Bunco Party and our Holiday celebration luncheon. Each meeting includes a program of interest. Recently we heard from the Bridges organization which provides the many foreign students working here in Door County with an American connection. We viewed the Movie 40 which is an inspirational pro-life movie that examines the effects of abortion on our nation since Roe v. Wade. And we participate in the May Marian Day for the Diocese which recently was held at eh Shrine of Our Lady of Good Help and often in another Green Bay Diocesan parish Please consider joining us at one of our meetings. Meet new friends, perhaps share some ideas on how to keep our organization vibrant and connected. We have much to offer but need you to grow and do even more for ourselves, our community and our parish. (920) , pastoralchurch@dcwis.com if you have questions or want Becky to assist with the planning. MARY S WAY OF THE CROSS-Sts. Peter & Paul Church, Institute, on Monday, August 20 at 6:00 pm. Experience the special blessings through the devotion of Mary s Way of the Cross. This dramatic version of the Stations of the Cross is from the perspective of Jesus mother and our mother, Mary. Mary s Way of the Cross enables us to enter into an intimate journey of faith through a deep reflection that will unite ones pain and suffering with Jesus on the cross through the sorrowful heart of Mary. Questions? Please call (920) or ssppbusiness@charter.net Daniel Fama/Sarah Burkel August 18, :00 pm-egg Harbor Warren Moede/Carey Smith-Marchi September 6, :00 pm-egg Harbor Health & Wellness NOTES FROM THE NURSE: KEEP ON MOVING: CORRECT WALKING AND OUTSMARTING YOUR BACK PAIN Simply put, walking is just plain good for you! It's a form of low-impact exercise with definite mood-boosting effects, including a demonstrated ability to alleviate depression. In addition, studies have shown that countries in which walking is common experience lower rates of obesity than countries that rely on cars for transportation. In other words, walking can make you happier and healthier. Correct walking (walking with good form and posture) lessens abnormal strain on our muscles and joints, actually alleviating pain and allowing a more complete motion, which leads to a more complete workout while walking. Because walking is a repetitive activity that puts stress on the joints in your feet and legs, proper form is essential for preventing injury. The way your foot strikes the ground is also important; it determines how the rest of your leg absorbs the shock of impact. Back pain is one of the most common reasons people go to the doctor and a leading cause of disability worldwide. Most people have back pain at least once. Fortunately, you can take measures to prevent or relieve most back pain episodes. If prevention fails, simple home treatment and proper body mechanics often will heal your back within a few weeks and keep it functional for the long haul. You may be able to avoid back pain or prevent its recurrence by improving your physical condition and learning and practicing proper body mechanics. At the next CHIP (Community Health information Program) on August 12 at 4:00 pm at First Baptist Church in Sister Bay, Keith Fischer, with a doctorate in Physical Therapy and specializing in Musculoskeletal Management, will present Keep on Moving: Correct Walking and Out Smarting your Back Pain. Keith will discuss correct walking technique, the different types of back pain and ways to improve it.
3 RESPECT LIFE- We know what true, authentic love looks like. It looks like the man on the Cross. This deep, pure love that motivated Jesus to offer his life for ours, is the love that will answer the longing in our hearts, if we let it. 10 Surprising Tips for Love the Culture Won t Tell You Respect Life Program, USCCB Secretariat of Pro-Life Activities THE AUGUST FOOD item being collected is canned vegetables for the CARE 24/7 Food Pantry, a ministry of Stella Maris. Donations can be left at the Fish Creek and Baileys Harbor sites. THE NEWEST STUDY AT EPHRAIM MORAVIAN CHURCH will be "Discover Islam," a film series and discussion each Thursday in August at 8 am. (with continental breakfast served). Certainly timely, the 5-week series will cover many aspects of Islam for the non-muslims with questions and perceptions of Islam. "KEEP ON MOVING: CORRECT WALKING AND OUT- SMARTING YOUR BACK PAIN", the next Community Health Information Program, will be held on Sunday, August 12, at 4:00 pm at First Baptist Church in Sister Bay. Keith Fischer, with a doctorate in Physical Therapy and specializing in Musculoskeletal Management, will present on two important topics: correct walking technique and also the different types of back pain and ways to improve it. 4 5 Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time-August 12, 2018 Worship and Music Column Stella Maris Parish Vision Statement We invite all to journey as disciples. By sharing the Gospel, responding to Jesus' love and the gifts God has given us, we welcome all to grow in faith and in our parish life. Our Discipleship Journey So how can we progress on this discipleship journey our vision statement calls us to? One way is by living out our parish s five guiding values. Welcoming and Hospitality- Plan to greet someone you don t know every time you come to mass * Look people in the eye when speaking with them * Ask others how they are doing before telling them how you are doing * Learn people s names and remember them * Ask questions to learn more about others * Tell others I m glad you came * Sit next to someone you don t know or don t know very well * Invite someone to join you at a church function. Prayer- Attend a daily mass more often * Attend a Pray with the Pastor session once each month, if not for the whole hour than for 15 minutes * Spend five more minutes in prayer each day * Pray for Stella Maris and our journey as disciples * Sit in silence for a few minutes each day, listening to God * Say a short prayer immediately on waking in the morning * Pray a scripture passage by spending time thinking about a phrase that speaks to you and what God is saying to you through that phrase * Pray at the same time/s each day, so it becomes a habit. Joy- Share with others what you are thankful for * Create a gratitude journal to recognize your blessings, then thank God each day for these blessings.* Greet everyone you meet with a smile * One day each week speak no negative words * Don t gossip * Do a kind deed without being asked * Share kind words with others. Breaking the Silence- Ask someone in need if you can pray for them * Share with a friend how God has worked in your life * Think about the difference knowing Jesus has made in your life and share this with someone * Consider sharing a witness of your faith at mass; let Father know when you are ready to do this * Memorize some meaningful scripture passages and share with others. Allow the Holy Spirit to Guide and Work through us- Pray daily to the Holy Spirit asking Him to work in your life * Consider new ideas, leaving the outcome to God s direction * Regularly ask yourself if you are allowing God to lead you - and being obedient to where He is leading you * Read the fruits of the Spirit in Galatians 5:22-23; pray for one a fruit you would like to see increase in your life. As we become intentional about the way that we live each day, we will progress on our discipleship journey and as we progress we will also help others to progress on their own discipleship journey. Loving God, I thank you for choosing me to be your disciple and for the gift of your Son, Jesus. Help me proclaim and bear witness to the Gospel by word and by deed today and every day. Open my heart to the outcast, the forgotten, the lonely, the sick and the poor. Grant me the courage to think, to choose and to live as a Christian, joyfully obedient to God. 6 Stella Maris Parish Star of the Sea Endowment What is a Meaningful gift? This will be different for everyone as we all have different financial resources and reasons for giving. Some may be able to give a cash gift now; others may make a bequest from their estate, while others may pledge their gift over time. Meaningful is a personal decision. It isn t the biggest, priciest or most elaborate, but one that leaves your heart feeling really good that you did this thoughtful and lasting contribution. Perhaps you want to give for your grandchildren who will live here someday. Perhaps you want to give out of a grateful heart for all that Stella Maris has meant to you and your family over the years. As you ponder this decision, of primary importance is thinking about what it means to you to have Stella Maris and all the people connected with it in your life. Meaningful to the parish would be to build an endowment that is sufficient to support the cost of worship, music and liturgy indefinitely. Using 2016 data, the annual cost of this core piece of the parish s mission is $160,000 per year, which means we will need a $4 million endowment assuming a 4% withdrawal rate to fund this annual cost indefinitely. While this seems like a lofty goal, we feel it is achievable given the research we have done. Building this fund may take a number of years to achieve, and while we hope a number of those who have the means will make generous contributions to help the parish achieve this goal, we also are keenly aware that achieving that goal will require broad support. A gift of any amount is helpful and appreciated. The collective impact of endowment contributions from a large number of those who have a connection to the parish will not only build the endowment, more importantly it sends a message that preserving this core piece of the parish s mission is broadly supported. So please strive be a part of this important endeavor we are taking to prepare the parish for the future. Pray over this decision, think about what Stella Maris means to you, educate yourself on the different ways to contribute and then decide what a meaningful gift is for you and what method of giving works best for you. Members of our Endowment Advisory Team will be happy to discuss different methods of giving with you.
