2 2 Welcome to Stella Maris in Baileys Harbor, Egg Harbor, Fish Creek, Jacksonport, Sister Bay & Washington Island Recently a parishioner told me she was so hurt that I did not thank her for her generosity to me. I immediately acknowledged I had made a big mistake, thanked her and told her I would do whatever I could to not hurt her in that way again. She also mentioned other people have told her they have had similar experiences of me not expressing my gratitude to them. I feel bad about that and all of the other ways I have done things that are imperfect. I know how imperfect I am. One of the blessings of old age is a greater sense of self, especially an honest one in which I can embrace my weaknesses as much as my strengths, knowing that God works through me as I am. I also know that when I do something wrong, hurting someone in any way I need to make amends. I know how selfish I can be in my need to take care of myself and sometimes how careless I can be in not listening or caring. I have often felt frustrated with myself in my lack of showing adequate gratitude to people. So many people have been so good to me from the time I came into this world until now. As a priest, many people Faith Formation Simplicity With Simplicity, I often define prayer this way. When I taught my children to pray the Lord's Prayer, I did a nightly line or phrase. I did not rush. I did not care how long it took them to learn it; basically I wanted them to understand the meaning and beauty of this prayer that Jesus taught us. Recently my daughter commented on how much she loved learning that way...this is a treasured memory for me. Many families begin teaching their children beautiful, simplistic prayers. The following is a Stella Maris Parish family's story that truly recognizes the importance of simplicity in prayer (the family requested to remain anonymous). My husband and I grew up in homes in which prayers were said at mealtime and bedtime and church was always attended. The bedtime prayers I will always remember; that is why we say bedtime prayers at our house every night. We will always say, "Now I lay me down to sleep I pray the Lord my soul to keep. If I should die before I wake, I pray the Lord my soul to take." I hope my kids will carry this with them into their futures. Pope Francis said, "To be friends with God means to pray with simplicity, like children talking to their parents." We all need to remember there are no rules to follow in prayer. Prayer is simply talking to God. When children can grasp this simple truth about prayer, they will most likely enjoy a satisfying prayer life as well as a fulfilling relationship with God. Most children speak openly and honestly about almost anything...i hear them speak this way in their classroom...and many do this in prayer. It is nice to know that we can pray about anything with simplicity any way, anywhere and at anytime. Blessings, Linda Cummer, Faith Formation Coordinator Health & Wellness NOTES FROM THE NURSE: A NEW SERENITY PRAYER-(adapted from the Jesuit Post) Dear Fellow Parishioners have gone out of their way to help, support and encourage me. I am just overwhelmed so much of the time with the compassion, kindness and thoughtfulness of parishioners and visitors. I try to say something at the time but do not always do it well or at all. For that I am sorry and ask for forgiveness. My time at Stella Maris has been particularly blessed with people showing their appreciation to me as pastor and priest. Every weekend, I hear so many compliments from people from all over the world. They tell me how much they appreciate me as a priest presiding at mass in the first place. They tell me how much they appreciate the energy with which I preside. They tell me how much they value my sincerity and conscientiousness in leading worship. I have heard many compliments on my homilies and how they are meaningful as they incorporate all the scriptures in addressing real needs of people. I have received s and other correspondence telling me how touched they were by how I greeted people before mass like few if any priests they have experienced, how much they enjoy being able to mention what they are grateful for and needed prayer intentions while also feeling included in the community by those concerns. I have also heard positive comments about all the special prayerful parts added to the mass. For all of those fantastic affirmations, I am truly grateful and wish everyone to know that. In my 25 th anniversary celebration this year, I preached that the only reason for me celebrating was to thank God for the grace that helped me to do my ministry because otherwise, there would have been no ministry. It is all about God. I also did mention and will continue to mention as much as I can that I could not do my ministry without everyone else for whom I am truly grateful. If I do fail in the future to mention my gratitude, be assured that it is there and I am trying to be better at expressing it. In Christ s love, Fr. Dave Ruby, Pastor Have you noticed how UNHEALTHY the current electoral season has been? That refers to candidates and constituents alike! Tempers ignite, stress levels rise (as do blood pressures). Respectful discourse declines into shouting matches which interfere with digestion respiration and emotional health. In a few short days, the election will be over. Probably most of us will be relieved! The escalating partisanship has left many feeling that "no good can come from all this". Is this what our Faith is all about? What about caring for our physical, emotional and spiritual health? Perhaps we should turn to God in a twist on that which has inspired and helped so many involved in 12 Step Programs: God grant me the serenity to accept the people and situations I cannot change, which is pretty much everyone and everything, since I'm clearly not You, God. At least not the last time I checked. And while you're at it, God, please give me the courage to change what I need to change about myself, which is frankly a lot, since, once again, I'm not You, which means I'm not perfect. It's better for me to focus on changing myself than to worry about changing other people, who, as you'll no doubt remember me saying, I can't change anyway. Finally, give me the wisdom to just shut up whenever I think that I'm clearly smarter than everyone else in the room, that no one knows what they're talking about except me, or that I alone have all the answers. Basically, God, grant me the wisdom to remember that I'm not You. Amen

DIAPER DRIVE DURING RESPECT LIFE MONTH-There is a great need within our Diocese for larger sized diapers (size 3-6) and wipes. Let's help stock the shelves at our local crisis pregnancy centers and Parenting Support Programs. Please bring your donations to church! Last year our Parish collected 4,000 diapers! FALLING IS NOT AN OPTION"-this month's Health Information Program, will be held at the First Baptist Church of Sister Bay at 4:00 pm on Sunday, October 23rd. All are welcome! These monthly CHIP programs are presented by Northern Door Health & Wellness Ministry, which your Stella Maris Health & Wellness Committee is a founding member. CHRIST CHILD SOCIETY invites you to be a part of Make a Difference Day!-Be a part of the nation s largest day of service. Help us celebrate our founder s 150 th birthday by making a difference for families in our local community. On Monday October 31, we will make burp clothes that will be included in our baby layettes. All are welcome to join us at 10:00 am at St. Peter and Paul School, Institute. Please bring one yard of flannel material and a scissors. We will end with our monthly meeting and a pot luck lunch. 4 5 Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time-October 23, 2016 Worship and Music Column Yes, it s that time of the year to begin thinking about our Christmas Masses! This year, Christmas occurs on a weekend. As in past years our Masses will be: Saturday, December 24 th : 4 pm Mass- Sister Bay 6 pm Mass - Fish Creek Sunday, December 25 th : 10 am Mass- Jacksonport These past several years, we have been blessed by the talents of those parishioners who are still in Door County (not yet in warmer climates!) available to sing in the Christmas Choir. The choir will sing at the 6 pm Christmas Eve Mass. And, these past several years, we have been blessed with the musical talents of family members visiting their Door County relatives for Christmas. Please pray and consider honoring the Lord at His birth by sharing your music and singing talents at our Christmas Masses! Contact the parish office. Infant Baptism The baptism of new babies and young children revitalizes our faith community. Please contact the parish office to make arrangements for baptism. Adult Initiation The Catholic Church is always enriched whenever any adult chooses to be Catholic. Adults wishing to be baptized, or baptized adults wishing to be confirmed, the RCIA program is available. Reconciliation God s great mercy is something to be celebrated. Ritually we Catholics experience God s unconditional love in the sacrament of reconciliation. Our pastor is available for this sacrament on the 1st Thursday of the month from 5:00-6:00 pm at our Baileys Harbor site (except holidays) and by appointment. Sacrament of Matrimony A faith-filled wedding is a joyful time for the couple and the parish. Our parish wants to have all weddings here be the best possible. The couple must meet with the pastor before a date can be reserved. Please contact the parish office at least 12 months in advance to begin preparation. Ministry to the Sick Everyone needs extra compassion and care when his or her health is not at its best. As a parish, we try to meet that need. Communal anointing Masses take place twice yearly, with individual anointing done when requested. Parishioners in the hospital, nursing home or other institution are encouraged to notify the office to arrange for visits or communion. Devotions MORNING PRAYER: Monday-8:00 am, Fish Creek SCRIPTURE CLASS: Tuesday mornings after the 8:00 am Mass in Sister Bay.
