2 2 Welcome to Stella Maris in Baileys Harbor, Egg Harbor, Fish Creek, Jacksonport, Sister Bay & Washington Island Two week ago, a man talked with me after mass. He started by thanking me for my homily which gave him something to reflect on which he did not believe he experienced much. He then asked me a favor: to preach on the importance of being properly prepared to receive communion at mass. Since I agreed with the importance of his request and was very impressed with his requesting because he sincerely and caringly shared his personal journey, I am responding to his request with this column. I decided that preaching on it would not reach everyone since I am not at all masses and that it was better to write about it in my bulletin column. His story began with him leaving the church because of his personal struggles with how the church and its members practiced what they preached. We have all been there at different times in our lives. After being away from the church for a while, he discovered that he had developed some bad habits and indulged in some sinful inclinations while wanting to change so as to become holier, healthier and happier. Although he did not go into detail Prayer Shawl Ministry The Stella Maris Prayer Shawl Ministry donates shawls or lapgahns to ill individuals or others in need of comfort. The group meets the first Monday of the month at 1:00 pm at the Sister Bay site to crochet, knit, sew or quilt. Others make items at home and knitting lessons are also available. Contact group chair person Dixie Van Vorous at (920) if you know someone in need who would benefit from a prayer shawl or lapghan, or if you would like to learn to knit or crochet so you can participate or if you have clean, full skeins of yarn to donate. On Care for Our Common Home We, the members of the Stella Maris - Caring for Our Common Home Team - an initiative of the Christian Service and Responsibility Ministry, have formed as a response to the call of Pope Francis to care for the earth, our common home. Please join us: August 15th, following our 6:00 pm Mass at Fish Creek. 7:00 pm, Joe Cramer will share comparative work at his Resurrection Catholic Church, Woodstock Il, including a proposed Mission Statement to educate, advocate and celebrate what it means to be a steward of God s beautiful earth. September 7th, 7:00 pm, for Renewable Energy for a Stronger Wisconsin Future, hosted by our Interfaith Community, The Unitarian Fellowship, Water Street, Ephraim, Tyler Huebner, Executive Director, Renew Wisconsin. Sponsor: Climate Change Coalition of Door County. Finally, most importantly, we are doing this in the hope that all who come after us will inherit a healthier planet, Our Common Home. Dear Fellow Parishioners (which is fine), I do not know of anyone who cannot relate to developing bad habits and sinful inclinations except for God himself and the Blessed Mother. I know that I can relate to that situation, myself. The older I become, the more in touch I am with my bad habits and sinful inclinations. The older we are, the more we are capable of stubbornly refusing to change, not showing compassion or even admitting that there is a problem. This man told me that he worked on and resolved his problem by participating in the sacrament of reconciliation more. He would not receive communion unless he was properly disposed and would become properly disposed by reconciliation. He even attended mass daily. His goal was to become holier. How many of us have that as our primary goal rather than seeming good? What is happening in our current culture that is particularly sad is that we do not believe in the power of sin and evil in our lives as well as everything else related to that. Unfortunately, we believe in the power of shame more than guilt and give it so much power over our lives that we do not take advantage of what truly helps us to be our best. Since we are so strongly affected by shame, we are afraid to admit we do anything wrong (since that would mean we are bad) that we avoid it at all costs, thereby missing many opportunities to grow personally and spiritually. Another sad thing is that we believe the lie that admitting we are weak, inadequate, mistaken or sinful makes us bad. Christians know that nothing can make us bad. It is only in admitting our negatives that that we can allow God to transform us into the person we are meant to be rather than the person we are while pretending to be perfect. Change is good and staying the same is bad. Real change can only happen with God and God s help. Guilt is merely the instrument which motivates us to change. The sacrament of reconciliation is what resolves our guilt while making sure that we are properly disposed to fully participate in the Eucharist which includes receiving communion. In Christ s love, Fr. Dave Ruby, Pastor Health & Wellness NOTES FROM THE NURSE: MACULAR DEGENERATION Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of irreversible blindness among people 50 years and older in the US. There about 8 million people living with AMD and this number is expected to increase 50% by The macula is part of the retina in the back of the eye and is responsible for visual acuity, which allows a person to read, see fine details and recognize faces. There are 2 forms of AMD: dry and wet. The dry form is caused by gradual breakdown of light-sensitive cells and the loss of vision is gradual. The wet form is caused by abnormal blood vessels growing under the macula and loss of vision can be rapid and severe. These vessels can leak fluid and blood leading to swelling and damage to the macula. It is possible to have both dry and wet AMD in the same eye. There are few symptoms in the early stages of AMD; therefore it is important to have your eyes examined at least annually. Currently there is no treatment for early AMD but for those with intermediate stage AMD, research has shown that high-dose vitamins and minerals can slow the progression. For those with advanced AMD, there are a number of procedures an ophthalmologist can perform, including injections and laser therapy, to slow the progression and hopefully, avoid further vision loss. While there is a genetic component to AMD, there are lifestyle behaviors which also increase the risk: so, it is important to exercise, not smoke, control blood pressure and eat a lot of green, leafy vegetables. 4 5 Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time-August 14, 2016 Worship and Music Column Canon 1246, 2 Holy Days of Obligation. I was curious as to why several holy days are not obligatory for Mass attendance when they fall on a Monday or a Saturday so I went right to the source for an answer: The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. On their website, there is information on this topic in an article entitled: Excerpts from that article are quoted below: On December 13, 1991 the members of the National Conference of Catholic Bishops of the United States of American made the following general decree concerning holy days of obligation for Latin Rite Catholics: Whenver January 1, the solemnity of Mary, Mother of God, or August 15, the solemnity of the Assumption, or November 1, the solemnity of All Saints falls on a Saturday or on a Monday, the precept to attend Mass is abrogated. In other words, the obligation to attend Mass is temporarily waived. The article continues: This decree of the Conference of Bishops was approved and confirmed by the Apostolic See by a decree of the Congregation for Bishops (Prot. N. 296/84), signed by Bernardin Cardinal Gantin, prefect of the Congregation, and dated July 4, Our parish patron is the Blessed Mother, Stella Maris, Our Lady Star of the Sea. Even though this year, the solemnity of Mary s Assumption into heaven is not a holy day of obligation, all are invited to honor her on this holy day. Our Masses are at 9:00 am at our Baileys Harbor church and at 6:00 pm at our Fish Creek church.
