One will be held on Wednesdays at noon at the Kress Pavilion in Egg Harbor starting on September 19. A second series will be held at our Sister Bay site at 6:00 pm on Thursdays starting September 13. 4 5 Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time-August 5, 2018 Worship and Music Column Is it Unfinished? Or is it Endless? Do not judge a song by its duration Nor by the number of its notes Judge it by the richness of its contents Sometimes those unfinished are among the most poignant... Do not judge a song by its duration Nor by the number of its notes Judge it by the way it touches and lifts the soul Sometimes those unfinished are among the most beautiful... And when something has enriched your life And when its melody lingers on in your heart Is it finished? Or is it endless? -unknown Just over four years ago, my mentor was going to be out of town and asked me to do a funeral in her absence. I had been Catholic a few months by that time and was just a tad nervous. I met with the family and sang at the funeral. My friend Sam played piano. It was my first opportunity to minister at a funeral by myself, but I was excited to be a source of beauty in such a sad time for this young family. You see, the family was a young couple. They had lost their first daughter at the age of 1. The young couple shared their story with me. The mother was at the hospital giving birth to their second daughter while her first daughter was dying a few floors below. I can't imagine the conflict in emotions. Joy and sorrow. Excitement and anguish. Such joy and excitement at the birth of a child while simultaneously hurting so deeply as you know you are about to lose your first child. I can't imagine. No one can imagine such a horrific struggle of emotions and I don't wish for anyone to experience them. The young couple, holding their infant child at the funeral of the sister she will never know, so deeply touched my heart. The poem above was in their worship aid for the funeral. As a musician I greatly appreciate the words so thoughtfully crafted. But as a minister that day at my first funeral, those words are imprinted in my heart as they let go of the little girl that touched their life for a year and embraced the sweet infant sister still in their care. Change has never been easy for me, though I've greatly grown in how I work through change. But this poem always catches my eye above my desk as a reminder that this couple chose to share this poem during the midst of one of the hardest times of their lives. The beauty, love and strength this couple shared with me, though they will never know it, is that sweet little girl's continual affect on the lives of others long after her passing from this world into God's loving arms. I can choose to view the endings or changes in my life as endless instead of finished or unfinished. And when something has enriched your life And when its melody lingers on in your heart Is it unfinished? Or is it endless? 9 Star of the Sea Endowment Frequently asked questions: 1. What is an endowment? An endowment is an investment fund that retains the amounts contributed and uses the earnings to fund the annual spending requirements, leaving the principal untouched. 2. Why did the parish start an endowment? The long-term financial health of Stella Maris will depend on our ability to contend with future business cycles and a diminishing population. Every person in this Faith Community cherishes the fact that we can always count on the availability of Masses and priests to offer the sacraments. To ensure that will continue to be true in the future, we need to build a financial nest egg now, taking advantage of a strong economy and a broad base of people with connections to this parish that may be willing and able to contribute. 3. How does the endowment benefit the parish? An annual endowment distribution creates a new revenue source for the parish, revenue that it can count on year after year. Since the parish is already paying for the worship and related expenses, the practical effect of the endowment is to free up resources for other purposes such as broadening its outreach or to move the evangelization initiative forward. The parish serves a significant number of seasonal members and visitors and has seen considerable fluctuations in its contributions from year to year which has resulted in periodic operating losses. The endowment provides a reliable stable annual source of funding that will serve as a counter-measure to annual revenue fluctuations. 4. Will we be assured that the endowment is shielded from parties that may have a legitimate legal claim against the parish or Diocese? The parishes endowment is held by the Catholic Foundation for the Diocese of Green Bay. The Catholic Foundation was established as an entirely separate corporation from the diocese and is governed by an Independent Board of Directors. Neither the local pastor nor the Bishop can access the funds established in the individual trusts in the Foundation. Each trust of which there are many are governed by the same terms with only the purpose specific to the donor. 5. Are there any guidelines for giving available? By combining various means of giving, i.e. one-time cash contributions, contributions over a time period or bequests through estate planning, individuals can make a meaningful contribution.
