2 2 Welcome to Stella Maris in Baileys Harbor, Egg Harbor, Fish Creek, Jacksonport, Sister Bay & Washington Island Recently, I was visiting with a seventeen-year-old man from outside our parish who has been dealing with autism which started when he was little. I was very impressed by him when I first talked to him before mass a few years ago and he told me about his great accomplishments in the field of electrical engineering. Now, he is planning to attend a university and major precisely in that field. I am confident that he will do well even though he has some issues that he really struggles with. If all of us are honest, we all have our issues we struggle with that can keep us from our goals. They can also be honestly faced, handled, so that they do not keep us from our future calling. As I was talking to him, I not only wanted to support him and help him as much as I could but I also wanted him to help me to understand myself and grow. I told him how someone once accused me of being autistic in some way and asked him his opinion on the matter. On a scale of 1-100, how autistic was I? I told him that I thought 15% but he guessed 35%. Health & Wellness NOTES FROM THE NURSE: CATARACTS What are Cataracts? A cataract is a clouding of the normally clear lens of your eye. For people who have cataracts, seeing through cloudy lenses is a bit like looking through a frosty or fogged-up window. As a cataract progresses, more of the lens becomes cloudy. When the entire lens is white, the cataract is called a "ripe" or "mature" and causes severe vision problems. Delaying surgery until cataracts are ripe or mature is neither recommended nor needed. What Causes Cataracts? They develop when protein builds up in the lens of your eye and makes it cloudy. This keeps light from passing through clearly. It can cause you to lose some of your eyesight. What Are the Symptoms? Cataracts usually form slowly. You may not know you have them until they start to block light. Then you might notice cloudy, blurry, foggy or filmy vision, nearsightedness, changes in the way you see color, problems driving at night or with glare during the day or trouble with eye glasses or contact lenses not working well. What s the Treatment? Sometimes your vision can be corrected with glasses or contacts. If it can t and cataracts are a problem in your daily life, you may need cataract surgery. The surgery is done on an outpatient basis and it s usually very successful. The surgeon will remove your lens and replace it with a man-made one. More than 95% of people who have this done say they can see better afterward. Plan now to attend the next CHIP (Community Health Information Program) on August 27 at 4 pm at First Baptist Church in Sister Bay, TO SEE OR NOT TO SEE when Dr. Paul Filar of Peninsula Vision Care speaks to us about Cataracts -- preventive measures, treatment options, surgery and more. (Taken from WEB MD) Dear Fellow Parishioners I thought that his diagnosis was very interesting. He said that in listening to my homilies, he noticed a basic pattern that I use as well as how during the whole homily I loop back to an original thought, plan, or foundation. He also mentioned that I use comfort gestures often, specifically citing one of them. I helped him by adding that I tend to see the world in a very binary way and push to make it work that way. I also tend to push matters until I find the answer that I think is necessary with people and in situations whether it is liked or not. I value radical honesty whether it works well with people or not. I have not always done well with people or in social situations because I do act in these ways. I also do not always have patience for people s pettiness or irrational behavior when working toward a goal. Overall, I have embraced for a while that I have never been a very good people person since I would always prefer to sit with a good book or write a good paper or simply think about how everything is supposed to be coming together in the world, with God and our Christian community. (I have worked on being better with people skills in many ways.) I do enjoy talking about it in teaching and preaching though. A few years ago, it would have been difficult for me to admit much of what I have been talking about but it has become so much easier as I have become more mature and comfortable with myself. Growing spiritually is about a greater comfort with oneself. To be better spiritually, one must grow in self-knowledge and selfacceptance while coming to know God and allow God to work in our lives in the way that we need God to work. It is difficult to know how we need God to work if we do not know ourselves, especially our weaknesses and inadequacies, our problems and difficulties. I feel God working more as I realize how much I cannot work as well as I thought and that is empowering! In Christ s love, Fr. Dave Ruby, Pastor Stella Maris Council of Catholic Women Our Stella Maris Council of Catholic Women (CCW) invites all ladies of the parish whether full time, seasonal or visitors to join us as a member or just to come to one of our meetings to meet other women from all over the parish and share in our goals. We are affiliated with the Diocesan Council of Catholic Women and the National Council of Catholic Women. There are many aspects to this group including opportunities for leadership, fundraising, hospitality, prayer, spirituality, community, education, service and friendship. We participate in many projects supporting the parish. We attend events such as an annual Diocesan convention or assembly, Day of Enlightenment; a Marian Day Devotion. Programs under the leadership of the Diocesan Council of Catholic Women and the National Council of Catholic Women provide gospel values to the needs of the church and society via commissions pertaining to spirituality, leadership, legislation and service. Respect Life Committee Our Stella Maris Respect Life committee mission statement says: As human persons created in the image and likeness of God, we understand life to be a fundamental right of inestimable worth; we invite all to embrace and defend respect for human dignity and the sanctity of human life from conception to natural death through prayer, awareness, education and action. This means we support the celebration, education and choice of life in some of the most difficult life circumstances with the dying, elderly, sick, disabled, mentally challenged, infertile, pregnant mothers, capital punishment, stem cell research and assisted suicide prevention.
