Faith Formation As I began reflecting on this column and the many opportunities for faith formation, with more to come, I felt the need to go back to our vision statement for Stella Maris Parish. We are all being called to journey as disciples of Jesus. To be a disciple is to continue learning and growing in our faith and commitment to Jesus. Please consider one or more of these opportunities to do just that. Our first session of Alpha will begin this month. Alpha is a series of sessions exploring the Christian faith, typically run over eleven weeks. Each talk looks at a different question around faith and is designed to create conversation. It will include a movie, discussion and refreshments. Watch this space for more information and future sessions. On May 1 you are invited to join us for our first Prayer Walk. We are starting an inter-denominational prayer walk with some other Door County churches. The purpose was to meet people where they are and offer an opportunity to come together in prayer and fellowship and get some exercise on our beautiful peninsula. Watch for a flyer in an upcoming bulletin. Our Holy Book Club will May 14th in Sister Bay. The books we will discuss are: The LateHomeComer by Kao Kalia Yang and "Once in Love, Always in Love by Fr. Richard Mauthe and Adi Redzic. If you would like to join us please pick up one or both of these great reads. Or just come and listen to the conversation. In the past few months we have had a parishioner talk briefly at our Weekend Masses. They have shared their story of their faith journey with us. Many of you have felt this was a powerful way to Break the Silence and learn that we are all on this journey together. If you would be wiling to share your story, please let us know. Christian Service & Responsibility Joy does not simply happen to us. We have to choose joy and keep choosing it every day. Fr. Henri Nouwen RANDOM ACT OF KINDNESS- Reach out to a person who has made a difference in your life ADOPT-A-SOLDIER COLLECTION-Beginning April 8, items will be collected for care packages sent to 75+ Door and Kewaunee military. These care packages are sent 8 times each year. Items needed are: graham crackers, large marshmallows, cookies, snack size packages of potato chips, pretzels etc., tuna and chicken pouches, men s and women s body wash (no pump styles) and men s deodorant. Items can be placed in the bins at the main entrances. WHERE DO YOUR DONATIONS GO?-The Boys and Girls Club of Door County inspires young people to reach their full potential by offering fun weekly activities to cultivate new skills and explore their passions in a safe, positive environment while developing meaningful relationships with staff and club members as ethical behavior and good citizenship is reinforced. Our donation of $500 helped to impact the 404 children participating last year. Our $500 given to the Red Kettle Salvation Army campaign last December was used to help people in need right here in Door County. RECENT MISSION TRIP-Five parishioners recently spent the day at the Salvatorian Mission Warehouse lending a hand in getting items ready for the weekly shipment of a large container filled with food, clothing, toiletries and other items to third world countries. Our specific task that day was removing glue from shampoo samples and sorting through clothing received from a corporate donor. The shipment the week we were there included a few hospital beds and it was going to Paraguay. The goods are shipped in containers feet long and hold up to 35,000lbs. THE SISTER BAY & LIBERTY GROVE FIRE DEPARTMENT is partnering with the American Safety & Health Institute to offer classes to educate the community in the proper method of using an AED, performing CPR and FIRST AID. 4 5 Easter Sunday of the Resurrection of the Lord-April 1, 2018 Worship and Music Column He is risen! Alleluia! Today we rejoice as we celebrate Jesus resurrection. Pope Saint John Paul II once said that, We are an Easter people and Hallelujah is our song! If we truly believe this, we need to be a joyful people. Easter is the culmination of all we believe as Catholic Christians. It was not long ago we talked about the kerygma which was really just a way to sum up the very core of our faith. It was the early church through the apostles and Jesus other disciples that preached the kerygma. Monsignor Charles Pope is a pastor at Saint Cyprian in Washington DC and has written extensively on the kerygma. He states the following: We are lost in our sins. God has sent the Savior, Jesus Christ, who died to set us free and offer us whole new life. It is he who calls to you now, who is drawing you to himself, that he might save you and give to you a whole new life. He died to give you this life and having been raised from the dead, he ascended to the Father, where he is drawing you to himself even now, calling you by name and offering you deliverance from every sinful and destructive drive, establishing you in a new, more glorious and hopeful life. Come to him now, repent of your sins and let him begin the good work in you. God created us for love, we are sinners, but the good news is God so loved us He sent his only son to suffer and die in reparation for our sins. If it simply ended there, Good Friday would not lead us to Easter Sunday. Easter calls us to take joy in everything. Start with whatever it is that burdens you the most. Whatever it is that makes you angry, sad or depressed. Whatever that is, it can potentially become one of your greatest sources of grace and joy. Seriously, it can. If the brutal Crucifixion of Jesus, the Son of God, can turn out to be the greatest event in all human history, then your personal suffering, your burden, or even your sin can very much become a source of great joy as long as you let God transform it into part of His Resurrection! This is the meaning of Easter! Easter means that nothing can keep us from the joy that God wants to give us. Nothing can steal that joy away. Sure, at times we will struggle just as Jesus did in the Agony of the Garden and the Via Dolorosa (the Way of the Cross), but those sufferings will not win. The Resurrection won with Christ and it will win with us when we cling to Him. Jesus persevered and in the end, rose victorious. This is Easter! Know that God wants you to experience the joy of Easter in your life. Let Him fill you with hope and with the joy that only the Resurrection can bring. God wants Easter to begin now in our lives! Infant Baptism The baptism of new babies and young children revitalizes our faith community. Please contact the parish office to make arrangements for baptism. Adult Initiation The Catholic Church is always enriched whenever any adult chooses to be Catholic. Adults wishing to be baptized, or baptized adults wishing to be confirmed, the RCIA program is available. Reconciliation God s great mercy is something to be celebrated. Ritually we Catholics experience God s unconditional love in the sacrament of reconciliation. Our pastor is available for this sacrament on the 1st Thursday of the month from 5:00-6:00 pm at our Baileys Harbor site (except holidays) and by appointment. Sacrament of Matrimony A faith-filled wedding is a joyful time for the couple and the parish. Our parish wants to have all weddings here be the best possible. The couple must meet with the pastor before a date can be reserved. Please contact the parish office at least 12 months in advance to begin preparation. Ministry to the Sick Everyone needs extra compassion and care when his or her health is not at its best. As a parish, we try to meet that need. Communal anointing Masses take place twice yearly, with individual anointing done when requested. Parishioners in the hospital, nursing home or other institution are encouraged to notify the office to arrange for visits or communion.
