2 2 Welcome to Stella Maris in Baileys Harbor, Egg Harbor, Fish Creek, Jacksonport, Sister Bay & Washington Island The first of the five parts of the kerygma is: God is love and has created me for relationship with Him. We have heard something similar so many times that we often do not even hear that message any more. It is good to try to hear the kerygma again for the first time as if it has never been heard before. That hearing is very difficult for us because we live in a culture in which we close ourselves off to those things we have already done, heard or been a part of before. Our strong cynicism causes us to move on to other things which we have not experienced. Although we may have pondered the first part of the kerygma, we have not meaningfully encountered it. The only way to truly have experienced it is to admit how much we have lacked love in our relational lives and therefore how much we desperately need God s unconditional love. Human beings are notoriously poor at truly showing love. Our experience of being unloved is often greater than being loved. It is very difficult to admit that fact though. If we do not admit the lack of love in Faith Formation God Sense It makes sense to me to pray every day. An important part of discipleship is prayer. I usually begin my morning by reading online the daily scripture as presented on the USCCB website (United States Conference of Catholic Bishops). Next, I follow up with their daily video reflection on the readings because I find this gives a good scripture explanation applicable to daily living. I also pray for discernment. Each morning I am reminded we find true knowledge of truth and error by reading scripture. As we teach our Faith Formation students, discernment is simply defined as the ability to decide between right and wrong. I found the following prayer written by Jason Weirich; it is a prayer for discernment. I decided to share it with you. Jesus, I need your direction today. Give me your senses as I navigate about my day. Give me your sense of touch so I can love people the way you love them. Give me your sense of smell so I can enjoy all of creation that your Father created. Give me your eyes so I can see the world less as a disaster and more as a field ripe for harvest. Give me your ears so I can pray directly to someone s heart beat and not what I think they need. Give me your sense of taste so I can enjoy food as more than just a meal but as daily bread. Jesus, help me turn off the noise of the world and the fake news. Give me your truth and Spirit so that I can navigate life with my family, friends, co-workers and anyone I come into contact with. Make me more like you and all that you are. Amen It makes good God Sense to me to spend time in prayer every day...hope you feel this way too. Blessings, Linda Cummer, Faith Formation Coordinator Dear Fellow Parishioners our lives both in the present and in the past, we will not have much openness to love in the future. When we are not hungry, we usually do not eat. If we feel our lives are fine, we are not going to change it. We usually do not even want to admit that there is something wrong in our lives because then we look bad. God forbid we ever look bad in any way. We would often rather die than seem like we are imperfect in front of other people. Admitting that imperfection is the death that is necessary for resurrection or new life. The only time that we are likely to admit how much we have lacked in love is when we have no other choice. Although we know that relationship difficulties bring on love struggles and the only way to change things is with acknowledgement and effort, we still try to avoid dealing with the problem. We avoid being proactive at our own peril. Death, divorce, betrayal, abandonment or other relationship breaks confront us with the choice of learning to open up to love in a new way or close off to it at our own peril. Taking the time to question whether there is something in the universe that is benevolent and actually cares about whether I live or die (do well or poorly) is a good thing. It is only then that I can truly find the one who loves all unconditionally. We know people who cannot find that love and commit suicide or stay depressed. God is so different than us that it is difficult to comprehend that God not only loves unconditionally but that I am personally included in that love. God, the Father through Jesus Christ has taken on my human condition so that I can have a deep and meaningful connection with him. If I were not told about it in the scriptures and experienced it in the sacraments, it would be impossible to believe. To be a Christian, one does have to believe it though. There is no choice. That belief has to be not just a matter of the head but of the heart, trusting God s love. In Christ s love, Fr. Dave Ruby, Pastor Health & Wellness NOTES FROM THE NURSE: LAUGHTER IS THE BEST MEDICINE Sure, it s fun to share a good laugh. But did you know it can actually improve your health? Laughter strengthens your immune system, boosts mood, diminishes pain and protects you from the damaging effects of stress. Laughter relaxes the whole body. A hearty laugh relieves physical tension and stress, leaving your muscles relaxed for up to 45 minutes after. Laughter boosts the immune system. Laughter decreases stress hormones and increases immune cells and infection-fighting antibodies, thus improving your resistance to disease. Laughter triggers the release of endorphins, the body s natural feel-good chemicals. Endorphins promote an overall sense of wellbeing and can even temporarily relieve pain. Laughter protects the heart. Laughter improves the function of blood vessels and increases blood flow, which can help protect you against a heart attack and other cardiovascular problems. Laughter burns calories. One study found that laughing for 10 to 15 minutes a day can burn about 40 calories which could be enough to lose three or four pounds over the course of a year. Laughter lightens anger s heavy load. Looking at the funny side can put problems into perspective and enable you to move on from confrontations without holding onto bitterness or resentment. Laughter may even help you to live longer. A study in Norway found that people with a strong sense of humor outlived those who don't laugh as much. The difference was particularly notable for those battling cancer. Infant Baptism The baptism of new babies and young children revitalizes our faith community. Please contact the parish office to make arrangements for baptism. Adult Initiation The Catholic Church is always enriched whenever any adult chooses to be Catholic. Adults wishing to be baptized, or baptized adults wishing to be confirmed, the RCIA program is available. Reconciliation God s great mercy is something to be celebrated. Ritually we Catholics experience God s unconditional love in the sacrament of reconciliation. Our pastor is available for this sacrament on the 1st Thursday of the month from 5:00-6:00 pm at our Baileys Harbor site (except holidays) and by appointment. Sacrament of Matrimony A faith-filled wedding is a joyful time for the couple and the parish. Our parish wants to have all weddings here be the best possible. The couple must meet with the pastor before a date can be reserved. Please contact the parish office at least 12 months in advance to begin preparation. Ministry to the Sick Everyone needs extra compassion and care when his or her health is not at its best. As a parish, we try to meet that need. Communal anointing Masses take place twice yearly, with individual anointing done when requested. Parishioners in the hospital, nursing home or other institution are encouraged to notify the office to arrange for visits or communion.
