Faith Formation JOY Christmas is a time of JOY-it is a celebration of Jesus birth. A beautiful time to rejoice. But how do you celebrate JOY and Jesus after the Christmas season? At Stella Maris Parish JOY is one of our values. I am a subscriber to online Catholic Mom and recently I read an article by Maria V. Gallagher (summarized below) which focused on finding joy in the little, daily occurrences of life. These may prove to be beneficial in your life. 1. Pray for eyes to see the good things in life. Good things abound in our world-the sweetness of a triple layer chocolate cake, the mesmerizing beauty of the sun on a cold winter s day. 2. Adopt an attitude of gratitude. A wise priest gave me an unusual penance: I was to sit in the church and contemplate all those things for which I was thankful. My reflection lasted a full half-hour and I felt much closer to Jesus as a result. 3. Commit a random act of kindness. Just thinking up a secret act of kindness to perform can be fun! One of my friends routinely pays for the order of the person behind her in the drive-thru line at a local restaurant. 4. Reach out to a friend. At times, I have found that just hearing a friend s voice can provide a profound moment of joy. A friend can often offer a life raft when one feels as if one is drowning in the sorrows of life. 5. Engage in some music therapy. Music is the soundtrack of our lives. I have found that if I am in the car and I crank up my favorite tunes, I receive an instant lift. (Remember: joyfully singing during Mass is praying twice!) Most important of all, remember to follow the words of St. Teresa of Calcutta and never let today s troubles overshadow the joy of the Resurrection. For it is in Christ that we will find our everlasting JOY! ~Blessings, Linda Cummer, Faith Formation Coordinator Nativity of the Lord "And we saw his glory." Never before or since, in the entire course of human history, have men and women been able to gaze upon the face of God. But for a brief moment in time, God "became flesh and made his dwelling among us." This is the remarkable event we celebrate today. At that first Christmas some two thousand years ago, the glory of God was revealed through the face of a child. As a tiny, helpless creature, completely dependent upon his mother to sustain him, this humble little baby came into the world. Yet this infant was "the only Son, God, who is at the Father's side." Why is it that the eternal majesty of the triune God should choose to appear in such a simple way? How does this humility reveal what St. Paul calls today, "the refulgence of [God's] glory, the very imprint of his being"? Today we celebrate a holy day that is unlike any other. Indeed we celebrate a BELIEF that is unlike any other when we proclaim, as Christians, that God became man and walked in our midst. No other major world religion makes such an astonishing claim. And with this comes our unique understanding of the humble nature of God. We believe in a God whose glory is not the glory of the world. His majesty is not like that of earthly kings and rulers. Rather, we believe in a Heavenly Father who loves his little children enough to live among them. This Father takes joy in the joy of his children. Jesus once remarked that just as we desire to give good gifts to our children, "how much more will your heavenly Father give good things to those who ask him" (Mt 7:11). This Christmas, may we remember that the greatest gift is Christ himself. Christian Service & Responsibility If you are in financial need, Stella Maris needs to help you. Please call the parish office or speak with Father Ruby. Mary, woman of action, obtain that our hands and feet move with haste toward others, to bring them the charity and love of your Son Jesus, to bring the light of the Gospel to the world, as you did. From The Joy of Advent THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT-A goal of the Christian Service and Responsibility (CSR) Committee is to plan, motivate and facilitate a parish response to serve those in need. THANK YOU TO ALL who have participated in our various collections during the last year. Your support for those in need is truly heartwarming. Thank you also to all who have contributed to the CSR Fund which allows Stella Maris to assist many in need. Nearly $20,000 is allocated each year to primarily Door County agencies and charities but also to some national and international causes. Your steadfast support of these inspiring agencies and causes is so very much appreciated. WHERE DO YOUR DONATIONS GO?-$1,000 given to Door County Secret Santa enables many northern Door families to be given a gift of warmth in the form of wood, propane, oil and electric during the Christmas season. Our $500 given to the Red Kettle Salvation Army campaign last December was used to help people in need right here in Door County. $200 was spent to buy Christmas gifts for a single mom and her three children, through the Feed My People program $200 was given to First Baptist Sister Bay to support their sponsoring of the community Thanksgiving meal. DONATIONS ALWAYS APPRECIATED Place a check in the collection basket. noting for CSR in the memo. Or to give electronically, go to the website to make a separate donation to CSR.
3 DECEMBER FOOD items being collected are canned meat or tuna for the CARE 24/7 Food Pantry, a ministry of Stella Maris. Donations can be left at the Fish Creek and Baileys Harbor sites. RESPECT LIFE- To Couples who cannot have children of their own, you are no less loved by God; your love for each other is complete and fruitful when it is open to others. Pope Saint John Paul II, February 13, 1982 Homily. END-OF YEAR CHURCH CONTRIBUTIONS-Church contributions for 2018 must be postmarked on or before December 31st to be credited to January postmarks no matter the date on the check will be credited to KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS-Our next meeting is on January 8th at 7:30 pm in Baileys Harbor. 4 5 Fourth Sunday of Advent-December 23, 2018 Worship and Music Column Nowell vs. Noël Why do we have two different spellings of what seems to be the same word? The simplest answer is one is of English origin and the other is of French origin. There are many theories out there as to which came first in regard to the common Christmas song, The First Nowell/Noël and what the meanings of each are, but the most commonly believed meanings are not the same between the two origins. Let s begin with Noël. Of French origin, the word and definition are believed to date back to the 12th century. It is derived from the Latin natalis, meaning of one s birth or to be born. In the French tradition of the word, it became associated with the birth of Christ. The First Noël is an exclamation of Christ s birth; announcing his coming into the world. Nowell is of English origin dating back as a surname to the 15th century and is a surname still commonly seen today. The spelling, Nowell, is believed to derive from the common phrase shared on Christmas day between friends and family in 15th century England: Now all is well or all will be well. Over time it was shortened to now s well or all s well and later, Nowell. Because of Christ s coming into the world, now all is well and all will be well. The First Nowell is announcing that now all is well, and all will be well because Jesus is born. Both Noël and Nowell are commonly seen in the wellknown Christmas carol, The First Noël/Nowell. But depending on the version one is singing, there are slightly different meanings. Either way, The First Nowell was a gift beyond our imaginings and the love that came from that birth assures us that all will be well.
