2 2 Welcome to Stella Maris in Baileys Harbor, Egg Harbor, Fish Creek, Jacksonport, Sister Bay & Washington Island Friday, April 15, I was at the seminary for the celebration of my silver jubilee. As anyone who has attended a reunion of any kind knows, it is a challenge to recognize anyone present. Some people are more of a challenge to recognize than others. The more the person was known when one attended class together, the easier it can be to recognize him/her. Coming to know someone has something to do with a knowledge of the external person but of course has even more to do with the internal person. We want to know the general shape of the body and head as well as the features of the face and hair but those are not enough. Those are elements of who we are but they do change in time and are not as important as something more. We usually acknowledge that the true person is deeper than the surface. Our personality is at the heart of who we are and resides in our brain, mind and soul. We may not have a full understanding of what forms our personality from the beginning, where it can be found or how we can fully know it but we do know that it is something that has a continuity from the beginning to the end but also undergoes plenty of change. Faith Formation Comfort in Mercy and Prayer Today is a sacramental milestone for our First Holy Communicants. These students have worked very hard in learning their Eucharistic lessons. As our faith community gathers today, let us pray that they will receive all the blessings and graces bestowed on them by this holiest of sacraments. This year was proclaimed by Pope Francis as a year of mercy and our theme at Faith Formation was prayer. Putting these two concepts together, the seventh grade students composed a prayer (on their own...no adult prompting was given...no changes were made to this prayer) for this second grade class. The following is what they had the second graders pray. May we all find comfort in praying as children do. Dear Lord, I know you love me and understand when I tell you my problems. I hope you give me joy, peace and kindness. Thank you for all of the goodness and faithfulness you have given me. Thank you for giving me patience when I feel frustrated with others. You have given me generosity and helped me to keep selfcontrol. When I give to others and charities, I wonder if this is what it feels like to be you, God. Sometimes when I make choices, your knowledge helps me not to make those choices again. When I get nervous about my First Holy Communion, you help me to remember that you are always there for me, no matter what. Amen. Blessings, Linda Cummer, Faith Formation Coordinator Dear Fellow Parishioners The Risen Lord was not recognizable in the gospel. Although there are plenty of guesses, we are never quite sure why he is not recognized. With all that Jesus and the disciples went through in his suffering, death and resurrection, there was plenty of change that went on within them. No one can say they were exactly the same after those events happened. We know that we have to be careful with what we say about Jesus. Divinely, he is always the same but humanly there are changes. That is the part that is difficult for the disciples. They did not recognize the divinity clearly before the resurrection. After the resurrection, they have a problem with the humanity and divinity. They last saw Jesus suffering, beaten and bloody. After the resurrection, he is alive, healed and somewhat otherworldly in His ability to be more present to all, especially those who are in pain, struggling or defeated has increased in his transformed humanity. The love he has always possessed fully as God is now unbounded in its ability to reach all. It is interesting to visit with and hear the life experiences of the other guys. I do recognize some guys from what they share about themselves which I knew from seminary days. I can recognize their priesthood as I hear about how they have been a part of the liturgy, sacraments and Christian community which embodies the Risen Lord. I can recognize them as simple followers of Jesus by the way in which they share their love of the Risen Lord which began with Jesus loving them first. It is not always easy to identify that love. It comes across in the ways that the person talks about what they do and how they do it. How much is the person doing something that uses his/her gifts and talents for the greater community and God s glory and honor? If there is a lot of self-talk and gratification that does not further the kingdom of God as much as personal ambition, then there are always serious doubts. Dave Ruby, Past THE MINISTRY OF PRESENCE John 14: I tell you, the one who believes in me will also do the works that I do and in fact, will do greater works than these It is not the amount of time that we spend with another that matters, it is being present. Being present is an act of love. It is putting aside the little details of the day and focusing on another person. It is connecting with the joy and pain of another human being. Our faith includes a call to offer God s presence to others. Healing can be the result of the gift of presence of others who care for us in our lives. When we are present with each other, we experience healing, even when we recognize that there may be no medical cure. For example, a person suffering from depression may never be healed of depression by society s standards, but they may experience healing because they receive the love of God through other people. We can offer God s presence by looking into the eyes of the man asking for a handout; by carrying the groceries of a young mother; by answering our phones when we think we are too busy and taking the time to listen to someone else s problems. When we truly see people and acknowledge each other as having similar hopes and fears, we see the image of God in those around us. BE PRESENT! (Adapted from Church Health Reader)

3 Parish Life & Upcoming Events Fifth Sunday of Easter April 24, THE NEXT CCW MEETING will be on April 28th at 6:30 pm at our Fish Creek site. All are welcome. The program will be given by Linda Cummer on her trip to the Holy Land. ADOPT-A-SOLDIER COLLECTION During the month of April items will be collected for care packages that Adopt-A-Soldier Door County sends to 75 plus military from Door and Kewaunee Counties. Bins will be at the main entrances of our 3 open sites. Especially needed are used DVD s, graham crackers, marshmallows and Hershey bars. SAVE THE DATE: Sunday, May 15 th from 2:00 to 5:00 pm at our Sister Bay site. We will be celebrating the 25 th Anniversary of Father Dave Ruby's Ordination. Together, we stand against the wind of the throwaway culture and brave its sea of indifference, sustained by Jesus who is, as Pope Francis has called Him, the living face of the Father's mercy. Life Issues Forum: After Marching, Acting as Islands of Mercy CARE 24/7 FOOD PANTRY has been open for two months. With the demand for food from our pantry increasing, we are in need of some items that are very popular. You can donate by bringing the products to the Baileys Harbor main and side entrances in the marked bins or just bring to the pantry in Fish Creek and leave it in the designated bin. We also accept checks as a method of donation. Please visit our website at for all the details. Here are some products that are in demand: pasta sauce, tuna, potato flakes, peanut butter & jelly, canned fruit and cereal. 4 5 Fifth Sunday of Easter-April 24, 2016 Worship and Music Column Stella Maris Feastday Prayer Service and Celebration As we approach the month of May, remembering our Mothers during this month is upmost in many peoples minds. Thinking about our birth mothers is one focus of our attention; however, it is just as important to give priority to celebrating and recognizing in a special way our Blessed Mother. Our parish, is proud to be called, STELLA MARIS and just as delighted to celebrate Mary in a special way at our: STELLA MARIS FEASTDAY PRAYER SERVICE AND CELEBRATION which will be held on Wednesday, May 4th at Stella Maris, Sister Bay from 4:30 pm to 5:30 pm. This is our third annual prayer service and celebration. The theme this year is: Mary s Garden. It is not uncommon to give flowers to the one we love and flowers show an expression of thoughtfulness. It is at this time of the year we can appreciate the beauty of blossoming and colorful flowers in our gardens. Various flowers have various interpretations so please come and join us to learn the meaning of certain flowers and their association with our Blessed Mother as we say Mary s favorite prayer-the Rosary. We will also pray the Litany of the Blessed Mother and say an Act of Consecration to Mary. No service honoring our Blessed Mother is complete without a Crowning of the Blessed Mother and so as tradition has it we will also have this beautiful expression of our love of our Blessed Mother. It is always a great opportunity for our Faith Formation students to participate in a meaningful devotion to our Blessed Mother. Our celebration of prayer will be followed by a social. A time to enjoy the company of each other and be grateful that Mary, our Blessed Mother, said yes to the call to be the mother of Jesus, our Lord and Savior. We hope you will find it in your hearts to take one hour and come to praise Mary, to thank Mary and to honor Mary by sharing your time in prayerful celebration. Contact the parish office. Infant Baptism The baptism of new babies and young children revitalizes our faith community. Please contact the parish office to make arrangements for baptism. Adult Initiation The Catholic Church is always enriched whenever any adult chooses to be Catholic. Adults wishing to be baptized, or baptized adults wishing to be confirmed, the RCIA program is available. Reconciliation God s great mercy is something to be celebrated. Ritually we Catholics experience God s unconditional love in the sacrament of reconciliation. Our pastor is available for this sacrament on the 1st Thursday of the month from 5:00-6:00 pm at our Baileys Harbor site (except holidays) and by appointment. Sacrament of Matrimony A faith-filled wedding is a joyful time for the couple and the parish. Our parish wants to have all weddings here be the best possible. The couple must meet with the pastor before a date can be reserved. Please contact the parish office at least 12 months in advance to begin preparation. Ministry to the Sick Everyone needs extra compassion and care when his or her health is not at its best. As a parish, we try to meet that need. Communal anointing Masses take place twice yearly, with individual anointing done when requested. Parishioners in the hospital, nursing home or other institution are encouraged to notify the office to arrange for visits or communion.
