2 2 Welcome to Stella Maris in Baileys Harbor, Egg Harbor, Fish Creek, Jacksonport, Sister Bay & Washington Island Recently, I was talking with a local artist who told me that much of her work these days expresses the randomness of life. I told her that I sympathize with her and not only personally agree with her assessment but know that it also better represents the church s teaching as well as biblical theology than the notion of God s plan. I so often hear people talk about God s plan working in their life. Of course, whenever anybody invokes the idea of God s plan, things are going well with them and God is putting everything together in a way that works for that person. When we contemplate the violence plagued world in which we live, we can truly appreciate the randomness of life. Who would be bold enough to say that there is any good reason why the specific people who were killed in any of the recent shootings was meant to be there and that God wanted them to be killed in that way at that time? I do not believe that. I cannot find anything in the scriptures or Catholic teaching which would back that up. I do not believe that anyone who is in Faith Formation Qualifies Over the past three years that I have been the coordinator for Youth Faith Formation, at times (especially in the beginning) I felt that I was not qualified for this job. I do not have a degree in theology, but I believed my love of reading books about God and my faith, being a teacher for twenty years and my never ending love for children were notable qualifiers. Having the cooperation of wonderful parents, the support of Father Dave and staff and a great team of volunteer catechists who plan interesting faith-filled lessons in teaching the children of our parish gave me the support I needed. These people are the strong backbone of our Youth Faith Formation program. I continue to learn much from them. I recently read an article in which it stated, God does not call the qualified but rather qualifies the called. God works in mysterious ways and I know that any successes I may have are because of the Holy Spirit s guidance. Do you feel qualified to become a catechist? If not, never fear, God will qualify you!!! Our program needs two possibly three catechists this upcoming year. Would you please consider joining our team? (We are also a fun group!) Last year Mary Mackowski joined us as a catechist. She was quite hesitant at first as to her qualifications for the job. She is a prime example of God qualifying the called she is a wonderful catechist. Many times Mary has told me how much she enjoys Wednesdays with her third grade class. Are you available (Wednesdays, 4-5:30 - beginning October 5) and willing to be a catechist? We will all be there to encourage and guide you, so please give me a call at (920) to talk about God qualifying you! Blessings, Linda Cummer, Faith Formation Coordinator Dear Fellow Parishioners the middle of a war, poor in the third world or living in a depressed area of a big city has been fated to be there by God s plan. There is a randomness about it all. Technically in the book of Genesis, God intended Adam and Eve to live in the Garden of Eden forever but they ruined it, Cain and Abel to live together peaceably as brothers but they ruined it and all people to live together well until they ruined it and the flood happened. Sin is a huge obstacle to the realization of any plan that God has ever had. God wants a just and peaceful world and yet we continually treat each other poorly, not taking care of the least and most needy while continually laying the foundation for more wars, conflict and problems. If we really believed in this whole notion of a divine plan, we are the ones who constantly wreck whatever good God is trying to accomplish. God does not force us to do anything. Actually, the only thing that God really wants is for us to live in relationship with him in this life and hopefully, especially the next one. With that in mind, the church would even say that there are no specifics in what God wants for us or specific plans for us. God is content with what we do if grow in relationship with him in this life all the way to the next one. That means that God does not plan for us to marry or befriend anyone in particular or to be in any particular job, or live in any particular place. Any of the particulars of our lives are ours to choose but hopefully help us in our faith, hope and love. When things go the way that we want them to go, it does make us feel good to know that somehow God validates that experience. God does validate us but just not in the specifics of our lives. He validates us as the people we are and were created to be. God even validates the poor, downtrodden, sick and dying as people he loves greatly. No one is more favored, all are loved appropriately. The kitchen entrance of the church remains unlocked so northern Door residents in need can help themselves to canned goods, toiletries and other nonperishable foods stocked in that entry-way. Food items collected at the Fish Creek and Baileys Harbor sites are used to stock the pantry. FINANCIA L A ND FOOD DONATIONS ARE ALWAYS APPRECIATED. ARE YOU INTERESTED? Any interested gardeners are encouraged to contact Joan Schaupp at (920) or Peter Nirschl at (920) WHERE DO YOUR DONATIONS GO? Feed My People was begun in 1982 to help those in need of food. On average, 75 households are assisted each month. In addition to the food donations received during the year, the agency spends $20,000 per year to purchase food items. Our donation of $1,000 last year was used for this. As the only licensed group child care and early education center in the area, Northern Door Children s Center is a piece of the puzzle that keeps northern Door a viable place to raise families. Our $500 last year helped defray the cost of providing care to over 80 northern Door infants, toddlers and preschoolers

3 CHIP PROGRAM on "Making Sense of Macular Degeneration" will be held on Sunday, August 21, at First Baptist Church in Sister Bay at 4:00 pm. These monthly CHIP programs are sponsored by Northern Door Health & Wellness Ministry. 4 5 Twenty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time-August 21, 2016 Worship and Music Column For several years now, especially at past NPM conventions, we have been hearing about the preparations to the revision to the Rite of Marriage and now the final approved edition has arrived! The newly revised Order of Celebrating Matrimony (formerly entitled the Rite of Marriage) will be implemented in the diocese of Green Bay beginning December 30, 2016 (the Feast of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph). Some dioceses may begin implementing this revised Order of Celebrating Matrimony earlier, but our diocese will implement it on December 30 th. This is important because, as Door County is a destination wedding area, the majority of weddings celebrated in our parish involve couples that are not parishioners and are from another diocese. This revised Order of Celebrating Matrimony includes several differences from the current Rite of Marriage; among them are: A new translation of the text (similar to the revision of the Roman Missal in 2010) An expanded Introduction with a new commentary on the theology of the sacrament and marriage preparation Instructions regarding the Procession / Gathering Removal of the penitential Rite and the addition of the Gloria New Assembly Acclamation Responses Options for the Reception of Consent There will be much to learn between now and December 30 th! Contact the parish office. Infant Baptism The baptism of new babies and young children revitalizes our faith community. Please contact the parish office to make arrangements for baptism. Adult Initiation The Catholic Church is always enriched whenever any adult chooses to be Catholic. Adults wishing to be baptized, or baptized adults wishing to be confirmed, the RCIA program is available. Reconciliation God s great mercy is something to be celebrated. Ritually we Catholics experience God s unconditional love in the sacrament of reconciliation. Our pastor is available for this sacrament on the 1st Thursday of the month from 5:00-6:00 pm at our Baileys Harbor site (except holidays) and by appointment. Sacrament of Matrimony A faith-filled wedding is a joyful time for the couple and the parish. Our parish wants to have all weddings here be the best possible. The couple must meet with the pastor before a date can be reserved. Please contact the parish office at least 12 months in advance to begin preparation. Ministry to the Sick Everyone needs extra compassion and care when his or her health is not at its best. As a parish, we try to meet that need. Communal anointing Masses take place twice yearly, with individual anointing done when requested. Parishioners in the hospital, nursing home or other institution are encouraged to notify the office to arrange for visits or communion.
