STAFF NOTES In January, our congregation adopted a very ambitious goal, to involve all of our members in the mission of the congregation by January That is a huge goal, as some of us are discovering as we are meeting under the name Mission But some things have happened this last week that have reminded me not to underestimate what is already happening here at Redeemer. As I write this (Saturday, May 16) there are huge posters in the narthex reminding of the ways in which Redeemer members are currently using their gifts in the Lord s service here at Redeemer. Besides the usual activities this past week, many were involved in hosting several homeless families through IHN and others have been delivering May baskets to our homebound members. A huge number of people shared their musical talents on Music Sunday. On Thursday evening, our RLCW had an inspiring speaker for our members and friends. On Friday night and Saturday morning our Board of Family Life hosted a wonderful Laughing Your Way to a Better Marriage seminar. We will be saying thanks to our many volunteer teachers tomorrow. Even as these things are happening, others are preparing for VBS, the Chicago youth servant event, and the Habitat house. Yes, staff members are working on some of these things, but most of the legwork is being done by faithful lay volunteers. And then I also hear stories of our members visiting the sick and helping those with special needs. I am just finishing a Bible Class on The Decline and Fall of Christian America. While we cannot deny that the influence of Christianity is diminishing in our nation, we also see opportunity to give witness to the love of Jesus in our everyday actions. Yes, our goal is to help every member to see the part they can play in this, but I am thankful that most are already doing just that. In Christ, Pastor Jim Heining CHICAGO MISSIONARIES! 7 Notes of Thanks... THANK YOU Glenn and I were comforted by the cards, prayers and sympathetic words that were expressed to us after Mom (Ruth Freiheit) passed away. Thanks to Pastor Jim and Pastor Rance who also visited her while she was in the hospital. We miss Mom very much, but we know that we will be together again. - Jan and Glenn Dicke THANK YOU Tom and Connie Harnack and family would like to thank everyone for remembering their daughter, Sue Bublitz, when she became so ill. Pastor Heining s and Pastor Rance s visits were very special to us. Also, thanks to everyone who remembered our family with visits, calls, food, and especially all your prayers. THANK YOU A belated but very heartfelt Thank You to Pastor Jim and Pastor Rance for their visits, and for bringing the Lord s Supper to us. Also, a great big thank you to the members of our Redeemer family for the prayers, cards, and phone calls. They have all meant a great deal to both of us and helped to brighten many dismal days! We are so grateful to God for the last report that shows Jake is in full remission! He will have to finish all 12 sessions of chemo, however, to make sure he stays in remission. It s much easier to complete them knowing the chemo is working. Again, thank you all so much - God bless you all. - Jake and Marlene Jacobson THANK YOU Dear Friends at Redeemer: This afternoon Joan and I hired a group of young people from Redeemer along with Mike Harvey and Paul Lewis to help with cleanup of our property. A truly enormous amount of bush and cut firewood was hauled to a modest sized burn pile (ask Michael how modest it was) and to Paul and crew manning a log splitter (they split and stacked more than 2 cords!), After about 3 hours of very hard work, we made and baked pizzas in our outdoor wood-fired oven. We closed the afternoon with a small thermite demonstration (again, check with Michael). What a great group of young people! I couldn t imagine a group being nicer, friendlier and harder working..joan and I were extremely impressed. It makes me very proud to be a member of the same church these folks are. I don t want to put words in Michael s mouth, but I would very highly recommend anyone else needing yard/property work to check with Michael about how that might be combined with youth group food raising. - Jay Kurtz THANK YOU Brothers and Sisters of Redeemer, We would like to thank you for your help and support during the first year of RCLS Redeemer Campus Preschool. Mrs. Henning has a fantastic year of ministry with five wonderful children and their families. You have provided us with a wonderful site for our ministry. The staff and pastors of Redeemer have been extremely helpful and supportive of the preschool, preschoolers and of RCLS. Thank you also for your generosity in sharing your church ministry with our school ministry. Indeed, we have been blessed by this partnership. We are excited to begin our second year at Redeemer and are looking forward to growth. We will continue our outreach to the neighborhood community. Thank you again for your prayers and your partnership in ministry. In Christ, Henry Pahlkotter II, RCLS Principal Lynn Schoppers, RCLS Preschool Director Bonnie Henning, Preschool Teacher-Redeemer Campus THANK YOU Thank you to Rebecca Circle for the beautiful May basket. - Gary Polikowsky THANK YOU Many thanks to my Redeemer friends for their prayers for my recovery from hip surgery, for the cheering visits from Pastor Jim and Bob Keith; and to Jan Dicke for delivering the lovely prayer shawl made by Glennis Beach so beautifully. It is gratifying to belong to such a caring Christian congregation as Redeemer. God bless you all. - Marg Watkins Page 7

Creation Corner - submitted by John VanProosdy As we near the end of the school year and vacations are being planned. Let's take a minute to consider God's creation that we will be vacationing in. What a beautiful place He has made for us and what an AMAZING job Satan is doing to fool people...even in churches...that this all happened by accident over millions/billions of years. They have no proof...but they will tell you all kinds of stories about how we got here and our children and grandchildren are exposed to this day in and day out. If you don't believe me...just try asking them what they think. God told us in his word that ALL men/women around the world will have testimony that God exists...and his creation is his testimony!! For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities his eternal power and divine nature have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse. Romans 1:19-20 The real question for us to answer is...if we don't teach our church family about this topic then how will they answer questions within themselves or their family or the larger family of man...when they try and tell others about Jesus?? Because everyone I witness to will always lead back to their doubts about Genesis and how "science" has demonstrated that Genesis isn't true. Then it set's up the slippery slope for a Christian that doesn't have any FOUNDATION for what they believe (Genesis 1-11) to tell someone that Jesus died for their sins and rose again...and out of the same mouth say they don't really believe Genesis because rocks are old and dinosaurs died off millions of years ago and the ark would not really have been possible. This whole approach to the Bible is causing many churches to die off by allowing this kind of teaching in their church...try googling Darwin Sunday and you will see what I mean. Then they start losing the battle for things the Bible teaches are right and wrong...because they let the thief in the door in Genesis and he is stealing the whole book. That is why we have so many denominations caving in to the homosexuality issue... That is why our creation group is so passionate about bringing you creation speakers to equip you with the full armor of God!! We will be having our Third Annual Creation Conference at Redeemer in November. Be watching the bulletins for updates as we start working toward this event. So as you enjoy God's creation, remember... This is what God the LORD says he who created the heavens and stretched them out, who spread out the earth and all that comes out of it, who gives breath to its Attention Business Owners, Professionals and Self Employed Liturgical Publications, Inc. 10 MISSION NEWS: Gillard Update Mission Trip to UGANDA September 2009 Anyone Interested? A mission trip is scheduled for September 14-23, 2009, to UGANDA, where Jacob and Michelle Gillard are now serving. This trip is organized by MissionsMadePossible who work closely with the Gillards. In fact, Jacob s parents, Greg and Kathy Gillard, will be part of this team in September. Below is a note from both Jacob and his parents. Please prayerfully consider being the hands and feet of God by bringing Spiritual and Humanitarian aid to the people of Uganda. All enthusiastic Christians are warmly welcome to join this team in September. There is a particular need for a team member to have some medical skills i.e., nursing, physician assistant, doctor. The medical person who usually is a team member cannot go in September. The total cost including airfare is approx. $3100. Please contact Ginger Taff-Lagergren (507) if you want more information and/or would like to sign-up for this spiritual journey. The deadline for joining the September 2009 trip is June 1. However, if you need time to think, pray, or plan, another trip is planned for March (Ginger Lagergren is tentatively planning to be a part of the 2010 trip.) On Sunday, June 28, Greg and Kathy Gillard, along with the founders of MissionsMadePossible, Tim and Pam Beadle, will be here at Redeemer to share slides, videos and first hand stories of Jacob and Michelle s adventures in Uganda to date. There will be a brunch following the 9:30 am service. More information will be coming, along with a sign-up sheet in the narthex very soon. Please let us introduce ourselves! We are Greg and Kathy Gillard, parents of Pastor Jake Gillard whom you are supporting with prayers and financial help as he does the Lord s work in Uganda. Jake, Michelle and the girls have been gone for 6 months now and we are so pleased to be able to share their story with churches and others that are interested. We were able to travel to Uganda in March for a wonderful 10 day visit. Everyone is adjusting well to the new culture and we can now relate to their daily life as we hear about it through and Skype. Pastor Jake is busy with coordinating classes for the TEE (Theological Education by Extension) students who travel to Kampala, the capitol of Uganda, two weekends a month to be instructed in basic confessional Lutheranism. These men will hopefully become the next leaders and pastors of the Lutheran Church in Uganda. Praise God! Jake also has traveled with and without the family to remote areas to bring the Good News and encouragement to under-served members of the Lutheran Church. We hope you will join us on Sunday, June 28th at a special luncheon when we bring you video clips and many pictures of the Gillard s in Uganda! See you then! Below is a personal word from Pastor Jake: Dear Praying Friends, We had a busy time leading up to Easter and just after Easter but things have slowed down this week so it s a good time to dig in and make some videos for you, submit some financial reports, and bone up on language learning. Yesterday (May 6) marks 6 full months for the Gillard s in Uganda. In this time we ve met a lot of people and learned a ton about life in East Africa. By the Grace of God we ve even managed to fit in to the LCMU team and make some ministry contributions. And we re still going strong praise the Lord! We appreciate you so much. We can say that after the Lord, your faithful partnership with us is the biggest contributing factor for our success in our first 6 months. Thank you, dear friends. In the Risen Christ, I am, your missionary, Jake, with Michelle, Amelia and Evangeline Page 10

Nile River Rafting (Story from page 1) Jacob s mom, dad and sister Becky came to visit. Jacob s mom and dad have been here before. They came last summer and participated in a mission trip. Sister Becky had her first visit to Africa. We spent a few days hanging around home and showing the family our life. We went to the vegetable market, the craft market, my favorite dress shop, the supermarket, the lake, etc. The three of them were so gracious. It was easy to host them. Krista, the vicar s wife had a guest who is a NGO worker in Sudan-Beth. Krista threw her a pizza party and the Gillards were invited. Beth s friend Roberta who works for an NGO in Uganda was also at the party. They were talking about rafting the Nile in the a.m. I looked at Becky and asked if she wanted to go so the five of us ladies decided to hit the rapids. We woke early and caught the transportation provided for the rafting adventure. We drove about two hours to JinJa which is the town where the Nile River begins. We got a breakfast and we got a little talk and got our gear. Then we drove to the Nile. There was another group of five in a second boat and there was a huge safety boat. To keep us extra secure, we had about 4 kyak guys shadowing us the whole time. We put on our helmets and jackets and get in the boat. We get our instructions. We get to class two rapids and he tells us to get in. We are going down in just jackets. Well, it looked unnerving but it was fun and we all started having a lot of fun after that. I can t remember all the classifications of all the rapids but here is what happened. We hit our first big rapids maybe a four. These rapids are huge it is no little river rafting adventure in Oregon where you feel bumpy and maybe fall out of the boat. We don t even sit up in these waters. It is hold the rope and sit down in the boat. It is like yeah, there is no way the boat is staying upright. So the first time we flipped.i went flying way back into the rapids. I sat in the front so I think the front of the boat hit and threw me back so so far. When we were going down, I knew we were toast b/c all I saw was a wall I mean a wall of water. So I m churning under and I m trying to remember that I won t die most likely and that I have to keep holding my breath. After a few seconds I popped up to see everyone everywhere and the little kayak guy there to give me a lift back to the big boat. We went over an eight foot waterfall next. We didn t flip over on that. Then a class five where we flipped again. That time I was churning around even longer and when I popped up Becky said you were under for a long time. Yeah, I wasn t too happy after that one. I had drunk so much Nile River water I was sure I would get runny tummy. We had a light lunch on the boat. We ate pineapple and cookies. We were offered water but none of us drank. We had enough Nile in us already. It was overcast and it began to sprinkle and get cool. It was so peaceful and wonderful in the areas where there were no rapids. We saw a lot of eagles and birds. We saw people bathing and washing clothes. It was beautiful Africa. We did over a dozen rapids in all all classifications We got to the last raid. It was massive. I mean I think it was beyond class six or something. We got out, walked half way down and entered. I was thinking how can we do this? All the huge water was just above us. Well, we got in..and soon after the boat flew. This time, I flew like a bird but since it was the end of the rapids there wasn t churning water. This made me happy and I landed in a peaceful spot. I got a kyak ride again and he took me to murky waters where it was a bit shallow and a monitor lizard was swimming along the edge of the grass. Yeah We ended our day with a supper at a beautiful cliff eatery. Our stomachs had settled and we all had a drink to celebrate our endeavor. Would I do it again? I really would. But Becky gave me some advice that I had missed in our training sessions. I guess we were encouraged to always hold onto the rope of the boat. The boat pops up right away so you don t get churned under. Next time I will try it. Page 11

Health Notes - Fall prevention Falls put you at risk of serious injury. Prevent falls with these fall-prevention measures. By Mayo Clinic staff The odds of falling each year after age 65 in the United States are about one in three. Fortunately, most of these falls aren't serious. Still, falls are the leading cause of injury and injury-related death among older adults. You're more likely to fall as you get older because of common, age-related physical changes and medical conditions and the medications you take to treat such conditions. You needn't let the fear of falling rule your life. Many falls and fall-related injuries are preventable with fallprevention measures. Here's a look at six fall-prevention approaches that can help you avoid falls. Fall-prevention step 1: Make an appointment with your doctor Begin your fall-prevention plan by making an appointment with your doctor. You and your doctor can take a comprehensive look at your environment, your health and your medications to identify situations when you're vulnerable to falling. In order to devise a fall-prevention plan, your doctor will want to know: What medications are you taking? Include all the prescription and over-the-counter medications you take, along with the dosages. Or bring them all with you. Your doctor can review your medications for side effects and interactions that may increase your risk of falling. To help with fall prevention, he or she may decide to wean you off certain medications, especially those used to treat anxiety and insomnia. Have you fallen before? Write down the details, including when, where and how you fell. Be prepared to discuss instances when you almost fell but managed to grab hold of something just in time or were caught by someone. Could your health conditions cause a fall? Your doctor likely wants to know about eye and ear disorders that may increase your risk of falls. Be prepared to discuss these and how comfortable you are walking describe any dizziness, joint pain, numbness or shortness of breath that affects your walk. Your doctor may then evaluate your muscle strength, balance and walking style (gait). Fall-prevention step 2: Keep moving If you aren't already getting regular physical activity, consider starting a general exercise program as part of your fall-prevention plan. Consider activities such as walking, water workouts or tai chi a gentle exercise that involves slow and graceful dance-like movements. Such activities reduce your risk of falls by improving your strength, balance, coordination and flexibility. Be sure to get your doctor's OK first. If you avoid exercise because you're afraid it will make a fall more likely, tell your doctor. He or she may recommend carefully monitored exercise programs or give you a referral to a physical therapist who can devise a custom exercise program aimed at improving your balance, muscle strength and gait. To improve your flexibility, the physical therapist may use techniques such as electrical stimulation, massage or ultrasound. If you have inner ear problems that affect your balance, balance retraining exercises (vestibular rehabilitation) may help. These involve specific head and body movements to correct loss of balance. Fall-prevention step 3: Wear sensible shoes Consider changing your footwear as part of your fall-prevention plan. High heels, floppy slippers and shoes with slick soles can make you slip, stumble and fall. So can walking in your stocking feet. Instead: Have your feet measured each time you buy shoes, since your size can change. Buy properly fitting, sturdy shoes with nonskid soles. Avoid shoes with extra-thick soles. Choose lace-up shoes instead of slip-ons, and keep the laces tied. Select footwear with fabric fasteners if you have trouble tying laces. Shop in the men's department if you're a woman who can't find wide enough shoes. Page 12

If bending over to put on your shoes puts you off balance, consider a long shoehorn that helps you slip your shoes on without bending over. Fall-prevention step 4: Remove home hazards As part of your fall-prevention measures, take a look around you your living room, kitchen, bedroom, bathroom, hallways and stairways may be filled with booby traps. Clutter can get in your way, but so can the decorative accents you add to your home. To make your home safer, you might try these tips: Remove boxes, newspapers, electrical cords and phone cords from walkways. Move coffee tables, magazine racks and plant stands from high-traffic areas. Secure loose rugs with double-faced tape, tacks or a slip-resistant backing. Repair loose, wooden floorboards and carpeting right away. Store clothing, dishes, food and other household necessities within easy reach. Immediately clean spilled liquids, grease or food. Use nonskid floor wax. Use nonslip mats in your bathtub or shower. Fall-prevention step 5: Light up your living space As you get older, less light reaches the back of your eyes where you sense color and motion. So keep your home brightly lit with 100-watt bulbs or higher to avoid tripping on objects that are hard to see. Don't use bulbs that exceed the wattage rating on lamps and lighting fixtures, however, since this can present a fire hazard. Also: Place a lamp near your bed and within reach so that you can use it if you get up at night. Make clear paths to light switches that aren't near room entrances. Consider installing glow-in-the-dark or illuminated switches. Place night lights in your bedroom, bathroom and hallways. Turn on the lights before going up or down stairs. This might require installing switches at the top and bottom of stairs. Store flashlights in easy-to-find places in case of power outages. Fall-prevention step 6: Use assistive devices Your doctor might recommend using a cane or walker to keep you steady. Other assistive devices can help, too. All sorts of gadgets have been invented to make everyday tasks easier. Some you might consider: Grab bars mounted inside and just outside your shower or bathtub. A raised toilet seat or one with armrests to stabilize yourself. A sturdy plastic seat placed in your shower or tub so that you can sit down if you need to. Buy a hand-held shower nozzle so that you can shower sitting down. Handrails on both sides of stairways. Nonslip treads on bare-wood steps. Ask your doctor for a referral to an occupational therapist who can help you devise other ways to prevent falls in your home. Some solutions are easily installed and relatively inexpensive. Others may require professional help and more of an investment. If you plan on staying in your home for many more years, an investment in safety and fall prevention now may make that possible. 14 Church Council Highlights - May 12, 2009 Old Business: Scott Okuno reported that the Planning for the Future Committee Transition Team has met and are now considering a name for the group, tentatively called Mission They are also looking at how to engage those people who are not now involved in an activity in the congregation. New Business: Church Growth Judy Lee We are still planning on participating in National Night Out on August 4, and plans are being made as to what our congregation will do to participate. The proposed Circle for younger women had six responses, and plans are in the works to finalize that group s meeting time, place, etc. The Table for 8 has been very slow to take off, so more emphasis will be put on that project. This group is planning a picnic for next month. Pastor Jim went over briefly a summary of division of duties while he is on Sabbatical this fall. We will have several guest ministers, and also the Stephen Ministers will be helping out with hospital visits, along with lay people in various places. We have a very able pastor in Pastor Rance who will be taking over a large chunk of the responsibilities, along with the rest of the Staff members, and Pastor Jim encouraged the Council to conduct business and make decisions as usual while he is gone, as he will be very busy trying to catch up when he returns. Sandy Weiden asked whether the church could have some sort of Classified Ad Section put in the bulletin or other listing for students, who may not have been able to find a summer job, for those who may have been laid off from their jobs, for those persons who may have a small business, etc., wherein they could advertise their skills and availability for odd jobs. After some discussion, the following motion was presented: That we basically put a system in place to advertise peoples skills and/or small businesses, perhaps an insert in the bulletin and on our web page, but not in the Resource, and limit this advertising method to members of the congregation and their immediate families. The motion was seconded and passed. The advertisers who have purchased space in the Resource will also be included on the web page and with the list that may be posted on the bulletin boards. Treasurer s Report Tom Burton Tom went over the Treasurer s Report and reported that our financial situation is slowly improving. Our expenses still exceed our income, but we are catching up. Page 14 Board of Education George Poch Sunday School is winding down and will have a Teacher Recognition Program this coming Sunday along with also recognizing the secretarial help that has worked with this group. Plans for VBS are pretty well set, and a survey will be put in the bulletin for suggested Adult Education topics for next year. George reported that they are looking at restructuring the function of this Board in regard to areas of responsibility, etc. Board of Elders Randy Hellickson At the last Board meeting, Pastor Jim had suggested reorganization of the traditional roles that Elders play in the congregation to step everyone up to Board of Family Life Krisanne Nelson Their main focus has been on the upcoming Laughing Your Way to a Better Marriage seminar that will be held here at Redeemer on May 15 and 16. They are looking for some additional members for their Board, and are in the preliminary stage of planning games and activities for the VBS picnic and outdoor service in July. Health Cabinet Roger Toomey (Cholesterol rescreening is scheduled for May 17 th, and 11 letters were sent to those people who needed to be rechecked. Also another AED-CPR Training Class has been scheduled for June 13, from 8 A.M. until Noon. A sign-up sheet will be put up in the narthex soon. Human Concerns Kay Fockler The response has not been as good as expected on the Habitat for Humanity Building Project. To date we have raised only $350 of the needed $2,000 goal as

Redeemer s contribution to the project. There will be more emphasis in the near future on the needs for this project. Right now they are pouring cement for the new home, but will need workers to help in the very near future. Redeemer is hosting IHN this week with two families, three members each being here. RLCW Sandy Weiden This group did not meet tonight, but they have a busy schedule ahead. This Thursday night is the Salad Supper and a Waffle Breakfast is set for August 9. Board of Stewardship Kristie Klatt Kristie reported that we will have collections of coins on May 31 and June 7 for our delegates to take to the District Convention as part of the Coins for Missions Offering. They are looking into starting a KIDS Stamp Program here this fall. This is a program sponsored by LCEF to get kids interested and involved in discipleship and stewardship. Board of Trustees Dick Valde Dick announced that the phone system for the church will be switched from Qwest to Charter Communications, and will allow each Staff member to have a voice mailbox. The service from Charter is cheaper than Qwest. Clean-up day emptied enough space in the garage so that there is room to store 50 chairs and 6 folding tables that can be loaned out to members of the congregation as the need arises. Check with Chris to find out availability of loaners. Chris has also been gathering information on a new copier for office use. Dick also announced that all upgraded electrical needs will be taken care of in the next few weeks to accommodate the installation of heat tape on the roof and other upgrades. Staff Reports DCE Report Michael Harvey Michael has been working one-on-one with a group of youth who are lagging behind in their 7 th grade confirmation instruction so they can move on to the 8 th grade level next year. Liz Hutton has also volunteered to gather some of the college-age youth together for fellowship over the summer months. Michael will help with this project. DPM Report April Beckman April reported a great May so far. Working with the Spring Choir, Music Sunday, and finishing up with the Children s Choir for the summer have all been very good experiences. She is getting together the summer music schedule, and will leave soon for her second year of work at Concordia, Wisconsin, for four weeks. Michael and April will also be participating in a Multi-Ethnic Conference soon to discuss how best to relate the Gospel to Ethnic Groups. Pastor s Report Pastor Rance The Classic Musical Movie Night was well attended, and participants are looking forward to another Movie Night in the near future. Pastor s Report Pastor Jim Goals of each Staff member will be discussed at tomorrow morning s Staff Meeting. His present Adult Bible Class Study on Christianity in America has been very timely and enlightening. He has already received some of the Grant money from the Wheat Ridge Foundation for his upcoming trip to Uganda on his Sabbatical. Youth Ministry Tim Batterson Tim reported the Backwards Progressive Dinner went well. He passed around an he had received from a member who had used the services of some of the youth to do clean up around their property, praising the good manners, attitude and hard work the kids had done. This past weekend a group of youth did highway cleanup along the Viola road. Page 15

June 2009 Mission Story Serve the Lord with Gladness! Psalm 100:2 Serve the Lord with Gladness was the theme of the first biennial LWML convention in Ft. Wayne, Indiana, Aug 31 Sep 1, That theme was used once again in Though themes have changed with each biennium, the women of the LWML continue to be servants of the Lord, serving Him and our neighbors both near and far away. Mites to support mission work have been a large focus of the LWML, generating millions of dollars over the years. Equally as valuable and blessed is the service that individuals, societies, zones and districts give. Many thanks have been received from seminarians, immigrant families, and the blind where you have spent your personal time with them to help fulfill their needs. Many social service organizations and charities have also benefited from the gathering of Gifts from the Heart and other servant activities. The society, zone, and national Bible studies that we have together help to strengthen and encourage us to be bold in our witness so that with every good deed we do, we lift up the name of the Lord as the source of our service. Some of us may not be able to attend Look to the Hills God Reigns, the 33rd Biennial LWML Convention which starts on June 25 in Portland Oregon, but the love and service of everyone in the LWML will be remembered and lifted up by many LWML sisters in Christ with gladness. To God be the glory for the things He has done through our service. Page 17
