It means in Hebrew God is with us. There may be no better description of what we celebrate at Christmas than this one Hebrew word first used by the prophet Isaiah and then absorbed by the Gospel writers. Let s set the historical scene in our first reading from Isaiah: Judah and Jerusalem are being attacked by a coalition of other nations. Ahaz, the king of Judah, is having trouble believing that God will preserve his people in the midst of these overwhelming forces. Thus, God proposes a sign that will assure the people of Judah that they will be preserved in the midst of distress and possible destruction. What would be a perfect sign that a nation will endure? A Child!! The birth of a child ensures a future it ensures that the people will not be overcome and that the people of God will survive this threat. The child is to be born to a young virgin and his name shall be Emmanuel. In the historical and literal sense of Scripture, this child is probably the next king of Judah Hezekiah. The birth of Hezekiah ensures that the people chosen by God will have a future. However, we know that there is a surplus of meaning in the Scriptures because of its divine inspiration. This spiritual sense helps us to see in this passage a foreshadowing of the birth of another child. That child, born over seven hundred years after this prophecy, will more fully than Hezekiah fulfill the meaning of Emmanuel. For this child will not merely be a representative of God, but truly God Incarnate. We see in our Gospel from Matthew that this title of Emmanuel is given to Jesus. He is God with us. What an awesome gift this is! We have a God that takes so seriously human nature, that desires so much to unite Himself to us, and that wants to enter into the messiness of human existence. The best way he knew how to do this was to descend from heaven and take a place in this world. 8 Page Eight St. Peter s Church, Mansfield, Ohio December 22, 2013 EMMANUEL To name someone or something means that we have a relationship with that entity. Family names identify us with our heritage; nicknames denote familiarity or a special bond. In the Old Testament, the meaning of a name ran deep. It identified one s mission, even one s very being. The amazing name Emmanuel was first uttered by Isaiah as he described to the frightened King Ahaz the promised one who would come to redeem the people. Emmanuel is not a frightening philosophical name, such as Omnipotent, Omniscient, Almighty. It does not connote distance and transcendence. It does not generate reverential fear. The name Emmanuel implies closeness and intimacy and compassion. Emmanuel is the name given to the one who is coming. It means God is with us. God is entrusted to the care of a virgin, who will bear this child. Only God would be so compassionate to draw so near, to be so available and vulnerable. Only God could love this well. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION How many languages do you know? Most Americans might say they have a primary language, can follow the basics of another encountered in school or in the workplace, and maybe know the barest elements of a third. Yet nearly everyone is fluent in languages of symbol and ritual, languages that transcend the spoken word and may perhaps communicate more clearly. A dance, the delights of the table, the thrill of sport, the power of a painting, a shared silence on a surf-washed beach or under a desert sky, a burst of delighted applause, all communicate without a single word. Sacrament empowers fluency in these languages. A little girl returning from Mass where a baby had been baptized was asked to summarize her day thus far. I went to church, and some little baby became my brother. That s far more accurate than the adult s remark, There was a baptism at Mass today. When we celebrate sacrament, Christ is always calling us into deeper fluency with the languages beyond speech.
