Because of our great success and appreciation to all that participated in our magazine sale, we took 30 students to Donato s Pizza for lunch in a limo on Nov. 22. The students had a great time and enjoyed their ride. Coming up December 5, is an all school concert to top off the success of the sale, given by Spenser s Own. Veterans Day Parade was well attended by our students as they waved their flags in appreciation of our hometown heroes. Thank you for keeping us safe and protecting our freedom, allowing us to practice our faith. We hung a large poster in our building and the students wrote names of people who are serving in the military or those who have served. In honor of the holidays, we don t want to forget the military men and women overseas, so Student Council with the help of our student body created Christmas cards to mail to them. Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, November 18, 2013 At the recent meeting in Baltimore of all the U.S. Bishops, we followed closely the terrible plight of the Filipino people in the aftermath of Typhoon Haiyan. The Bishops left the meeting confident that the Catholic people of our country will respond generously to the urgent need for assistance. I know that parishes have already been asked to take a collection for Catholic Relief Services (CRS) for this purpose. I want to add a personal word of encouragement to you to make a generous gift for our brothers and sisters in need. Finally, as I write this letter, I have just paid a visit to Cloverdale in our own diocese in the aftermath of the storm that passed through the area on November 17. The parish church of St. Barbara, Cloverdale, was completely destroyed, together with the former rectory which houses the parish offices. We join the people of Cloverdale in giving thanks that at least no one was seriously injured or killed, and we pledge our prayerful solidarity. May God bless all of us as we prepare to celebrate Thanksgiving for all that He has given to us. Sincerely yours in Christ, The Most Reverend Leonard P. Blair Bishop of Toledo

7 Page Eight St. Peter s Church, Mansfield, Ohio December 1, 2013 GETTING READY Today marks the beginning of another liturgical year. The tone of today s readings casts us in the role of students learning solemn lessons. The reading from Isaiah sets the stage, calling us up a mountain to receive the Lord s instruction. In this passage we study peace. Then Paul steps forth with sober admonitions. We have to wake up; the day is almost here. Live honorably in the light. Paul reminds us that we really do know the time in which we are living. Finally, Matthew presents Jesus the storyteller. Just imagine, Jesus tells us, what it was like in Noah s time. He paints a vivid picture of ordinary people living ordinary lives and ignoring the warnings that Noah heeded. Totally unconcerned, they were destroyed. How will it be any different for us? No one knows when the Lord will come. But we have been warned. Perhaps we find such sobering scriptures unappealing and threatening. But within them there is promise. We are to live in the light with nothing to hide. We are to be ready. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION People in love make signs of love, wrote our bishops in a document guiding the renewal of liturgical music. They were not merely urging us to sing at Mass, but suggesting that the song itself is a sign of the love of Christ. Love never expressed dies, as we know from experience. Flowers for no special reason, a caress, a hug, a turn around the dance floor, a note on the pillow or in the lunchbox, the aroma of fresh bread in the kitchen, all are signs of love s vitality. A significant treasure in our Catholic tradition is the place of the sacraments as signs of Christ s love. We can trace the sacraments back to scriptural sources, through centuries of history They are woven through family tradition and our own life story. Sacraments are the way Christ makes signs of love for the Church. For twenty centuries, God has spoken to us in the arena of the sacraments, and we have responded. For the next year of Treasure essays, we will explore the story of sacraments: their sources, their signs and rituals, and the way Christ nurtures and sustains us as we encounter him, the companion on our journey who loves us and faithfully makes signs of that love. TODAY S READINGS First Reading All the peoples shall stream toward the LORD s house (Isaiah 2:1-5). Psalm Let us go rejoicing to the house of the Lord (Psalm 122). Second Reading It is the hour to cast off the dark and clothe ourselves in the light (Romans 13:11 14). Gospel Stay awake! Be prepared! The Son of Man will come when you least expect (Matthew 24:37-44). END OF THE YEAR GIVING: If you are considering a charitable, tax deductible donation for the current tax year, please remember your parish among your charities. You may wish to consider a donation(s) to any of the following: The Msgr. Dunn Foundation, Spartan Athletic Boosters, the Annual Tuition Drive (ATD, 2014/15), the restricted fund for Sanctuary and Liturgical needs, or a donation to the organ preservation fund. And don t forget Catholic Charities, the Feed the Needy program, and food gift cards for the needy (drop off at the parish office). As we approach Thanksgiving and the beginning of a new liturgical year with Advent, our thoughts turn to the many blessings which God has bestowed on us. Why not share these blessings with others? God bless you for your love and sacrifice! ADVENT Let s approach Christmas with an expectant hush, rather than a last-minute rush. Resist being fear-filled. Instead pray for the strength to be courageous.
