1 SAINT PETER S CATHOLIC CHURCH January 4, 2015 After their meeting with the king, the magi set out. And behold, the star that they had seen at its rising preceded them, until it came and stopped over the place where the child was. They were overjoyed at seeing the star, and on entering the house they saw the child with Mary his mother. They prostrated themselves and did him homage. Then they opened their treasures and offered him gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. ~ Matthew 2: West First Street Mansfield, Ohio Mass Schedule: Saturday: 5:00 pm Sunday: 7:30 am, 9:30 am, 11:30 am Monday & Friday 5:30 pm Tuesday - Thursday 6:30 am Phones: Rectory & Parish Center: Convent: High School, Jr. High: Grade School, Montessori: Child Care Center: Ext Fax: Gifts to Msgr. We summarized the fiscal year Financials (July 2013 June 2014) and previewed the current fiscal year (July 2014 June 2015) budget. This was the third consecutive year in which we finished the year in the black more income than expenses. As I mentioned at the Masses, just a few short years ago we finished the year with a net loss of nearly $500,000. Thank you to the members of the Finance Council, the Budget Committee, Fr. Hite, and John Kastelic for their support, guidance and diligence throughout the year. In this first bulletin column of the year I would like to briefly highlight some of the accomplishments achieved in the 2014 calendar year was the first year in quite a long time where we did not owe the Diocese of Toledo any money. The loan to pay off the nearly $1 million dollar debt is gone and all 2014 assessments ($97,835) and insurance ($36,000) were again paid to the Diocese. Our renewed Cemeteries Committee was very active and successful last year. When I started in this position a couple years ago the Parish owed the Mansfield Cemetery Association over $26,000 for maintenance at Mansfield Catholic Cemetery. When we receive our last invoice at the end of December (this bulletin had to be submitted early, by Dec. 22nd, for a holiday bulletin deadline) we will send a check to the Association which takes us out of the red. This was accomplished with efficient budgeting, increased lot sales, and a successful Open House at Prince of Peace Cemetery in the spring of We have wonderful plans for 2015 and you will hear about those soon. Thank you to Dave Barber for productively chairing the Cemeteries Committee. Safety and Security were a major focus in Spartan Fields has new security cameras. The Elementary School received a new and improved camera/security system. The 104 West First Street building which houses the Parish Center, High School, Junior High, San Damiano Hall, 4th Floor Parish Staff offices, and most importantly, our Convent now has an extensive security and surveillance system. Several cameras are located inside the building and other cameras situated outside the building. Continued on page 5...

Let us always celebrate Life, especially the coming of Jesus to us over 2000 years ago. ~ St. Peter s Respect Life Year-End Statements - If you want a statement of your 2014 donations, just call the Parish Center. More Hearing Improvements! If you are one of many of our Parishioners who wear hearing aids, and if your hearing aids are equipped with a T-Coil (which may need to be activated by your audiologist), we have a new piece of equipment which may be just right for you! We now have T-Coil Hearing Loops which work with our existing Assistive Listening System. You simply plug the loop into one of our Assistive Listening Packs, hang the loop around your neck and you re ready to go! The loop will transmit the signal directly to the T-Coil in your hearing aids and you ll be able to hear with much greater clarity! Parishioners who have already tried this improvement are just raving about it. See Mr. Johnson or leave a message at , ext KIOSK - At Our Main Entrance Of Church Do you want to know what you can do to help someone who has fallen away from the church? So, thanks go to the various choirs (we are blessed with such talent!), instrumentalists, cantors, and Bill Johnson who worked for weeks behind the scenes. Our sacristans and liturgical planners, especially our parish youth and friends and all our generous volunteers. Our parishioner police protection, who always work quietly behind the scenes. All members of our Liturgy Committee, who created such a beautiful environment. Special thanks to the Kim and Kevin Payne family and Shelly and Kris Knapp family for setting up the nativity scene. Our ushers, Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, readers and altar servers. To Bob Hunter for polishing the marble floors, and sanctuary. To our parish office staff, Parish Center receptionists and all who prepare our bulletin. Those who cleaned the pews, the lanterns, replaced light bulbs, and secured the church. To those who minister on a regular basis to our sick and shut-ins and those who are hospitalized. To Herlihy-Chambers Funeral Home for the annual calendars. To those who donated their time and talent to the Christmas Classic, especially Ann Brown and her committee. What a beautiful part of the culture of our parish! To our Mass Coordinators, to those who prepared before Mass, and for those who washed and ironed our linens which are always done so nicely. Lord, please don t let us forget anyone You know who they are, and they are blessed by you! Many people were so generous in dropping off goodies to the rectory! Your cards and thoughtful gifts were very appreciated! That unexpected door bell ring at the kitchen from a parishioner adds to the festivity of the season. Thank you, Lord, for the nice weather, so that your faithful people were able to get to church. We thank you, too, for their generous contributions to the welfare of our parish and our parish ministries. May the love of Our Savior grant you peace in this coming year! Father Hite and Father Jeremy Throughout the school year and especially during this Christmas season, youth at St. Peter s Parish and students of St. Peter s School are reminded and made aware of the fact that it is part of their mission to care for those in need. Through many projects, both during and outside of the school day, our youth at all grade levels participate in projects that enable them to share their blessings with others not only in our community but throughout the world. We have actually had that need a couple times already. I envision 2015 will see even more cameras throughout our campus The Properties Committee targeted and achieved many repair and maintenance projects during The 11x17 spreadsheet of planned projects always gives me nightmares. Significant masonry and roofing work was completed on the Church, Elementary School and High School buildings. 8 Page 8 St. Peter s Catholic Church, Mansfield, Ohio January 4, 2015 PARTNERS IN THE PROMISE As a society, during these days we can be in something of a postpartum depression. Our celebrations of Christmas and the New Year are over, and after today many of us will put away the decorations and the last visible remnants of the celebrations of the past weeks. The apostle Paul today uses the expression partners in the promise. This is an uplifting phrase for us to reflect upon, and to think of as our own calling in these days following the birth of the Lord. What is this promise? We can find it in the gifts the magi bring: it is a promise of being a royal priesthood (gold), a holy nation (frankincense), a people set apart for self-giving (myrrh). We find more of the promise in Isaiah a light shines upon us! In the psalm we know a promise of a world of flowering justice, profound peace, the poor rescued, pity for the lowly and the poor. This is the promise; and one of the best ways for us to lift ourselves out of any possible low spirits we may be suffering is to live out our partnership in this promise each and every day. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Epiphany celebrates the wakeup calls of life, the showings of God s majesty and power in the person of Jesus. The feast alerts us to look for signs of the Lord s grace and action in our lives today. In this context, the call of the Second Vatican Council to reform the sacramental life of the Church, including our pattern of care for the sick, is indeed a holy awakening. Prior to the 1960s, our care for the sick had collapsed in the popular imagination into something everyone called last rites. An immensely complicated ritual, with anointing accompanied by quickly muttered Latin prayers, was enacted for a marginally conscious person at death s door. By the time a priest was called, the sick person might not be able to receive viaticum, or derive much personal benefit from the ritual. The healing effects of the sacrament, investing suffering with the dignity of a link to Christ s cross, and the immense assurance of forgiveness for a person reviewing the life journey, were hidden. Suddenly, an epiphany swept through the Church, and the way we care for the sick was utterly transformed. It took several centuries, however, for the Church to reach that moment of renewal. Rev.
