1 SAINT PETER CATHOLIC CHURCH September 21, 2014 St. Cosmas and St. Damian Feast Day - September 26 The commemoration of St. Cosmas and St. Damian is one of the most ancient feasts of the Church, and these two martyrs have been honored in the East and West in many ways, including the building and dedication of churches in their honor in many places, including Rome and Constantinople. Along with St. Luke, they are the patron saints of doctors. Although we cannot be certain of the details of their lives, the information that has come down to us is of very early origin. Saints Cosmas and Damian were venerated in the East as the "moneyless ones" because they practiced medicine at no charge. They were twin brothers, born in Cilicia (in what is now Turkey). They studied in Syria and became skilled physicians. Since they were prominent Christians, they were among the first arrested when the great persecution under Diocletian began. Lysias, the governor of Cilicia, ordered their arrest, and they were beheaded in about the year 287. Their bodies, it was said, were carried to Syria and buried at the ancient Syrian city of Cyrrhus, which then became known as Hagioupolis the City of the Holy Ones. They were venerated very early and became patrons of medicine, known for their miracles of healing. The Emperor Justinian asked the heavenly aid of these saints, was cured by their intercession, leading the emperor to give special honor to the city of Cyrrhus where their relics were enshrined. Their basilica in Rome, decorated with beautiful mosaics, was dedicated in the year 530. They are named in the Roman Martyrology and in the Canon of the Mass, testifying to the antiquity of the celebration of their feast day. 104 West First Street Mansfield, Ohio Mass Schedule: Saturday: 5:00 pm Sunday: 7:30 am, 9:30 am, 11:30 am Monday & Friday 5:30 pm Tuesday - Thursday 6:30 am Phones: Rectory & Parish Center: Convent: High School, Jr. High: Grade School, Montessori: Child Care Center: Ext Fax: Gifts to Msgr. In short, summer is over. The kids have been back in school about a month now, and a certain routine sets in. This can translate into eating on the run. It s not always possible for family or friends to share the leisure of summer together. And sad, but true, it seems like our faith sometimes even takes a back seat intentionally or unintentionally. As families try to raise families in the faith, here are a few dinner table tips that I borrowed from another parish bulletin someone recently passed along to me. It was printed in St. Michael s Parish bulletin, Olympia, WA. I borrowed some ideas. + Everyone should know certain nights are family dinner nights. Look closely at schedules, make a plan, and then hold family nights sacred. + Whether frozen pizza or a fine meal, set the table nicely and sit down. Light a dinner candle or pull out the cloth napkins now and then. Pick up a special dessert once in a while. + Parents and kids often hit the dinner hour fatigued. Make an effort to relax. Start off with a smile and laughter, even when you d rather hit the couch. + If you haven t already, begin the family custom of praying before meals in a spontaneous way. What are you most thankful for today? Give everyone a turn to share what their day was like. + Resist scolding or criticizing a child at dinner. Avoid topics which create stress. Allow the dinner table to be a place of welcome and support. + Share ups and downs of your own day. Listen respectfully and offer understanding. + Be sure to include faith in the discussion, and make it positive. + Set the rule that everyone remains seated until all are finished. Then the meal is complete. + Divide the duties of setting the table, clearing, washing, even cooking so that everyone has a role to play and the work goes quickly. Remember that frequently Jesus most effective ministry was done in the context of a meal. Sharing, listening, offering support, expressing love even to the point of anticipating in those last hours of his life the heavenly banquet to bring life and hope. In a world that competes for our time and our attention, and where human interaction is minimized, ask yourself: are we better off for it? Sometimes the most simple, uncomplicated times and rituals are the ones the kids remember for a lifetime. Father Gregory Hite

This will involve newly installed fixtures for the north side restroom which has been inoperable for many years and several updates to the south side restroom. The large restrooms will be closed for renovation over the winter. At that time the work on the two side single restrooms will be completed. BLUE BARRELS Will be out next the weekend of October 11 & 12 Thank you for your support! ALS Ice Bucket Challenge Many parishioners have asked about Catholics participating in the Ice Bucket challenge. This is a fundraiser for research of ALS, more commonly known as Lou Gehrig s disease. It involves having ice and water dumped over one s head to raise awareness and financial support for the cure of this terrible illness. Concerns have been raised about ALS because some of the research involves the use of embryonic stem cells. The Church in her moral teaching is opposed to the use of embryonic stem cells because an embryo is a human life that deserves all the protection of being human. Therefore, so as to not cooperate with the practice of exploiting human embryos, the Church has proposed an alternative option for those who would like to support this cause but who do not want to support embryonic stem cell research. The alternative is to donate funds to The John Paul II Medical Research Institute. This center in Iowa does the same kind of medical research, yet does not support any research that contradicts Catholic teaching. On their website, you can specify that your funds go to ALS research. * I hope you can join us for these two special events coming up! 8 Page 8 St. Peter Catholic Church, Mansfield, Ohio September 21, 2014 SEEK THE LORD In today s opening reading, Isaiah urges us to seek the LORD who is near and can be found (Isaiah 55:6). Then Isaiah says God s ways are as high above our ways as the heavens are above the earth (Isaiah 55:9). So we search, not because God is hiding, but because our tendencies are so different from God s ways that we get lost. How are God s ways so high above our ways? The example Isaiah gives is that God s way is to be generous in forgiving (Isaiah 55:7). And our way? We try to be fair. You hurt me, so then I hurt you back, just as hard. Then, of course, you.... And on it goes. In today s Gospel Jesus teaches that God is not fair like that. Instead, God is so generous we can hardly understand it. The same wage for one hour as for a whole day of work? Not fair! Seek the Lord, and we might find a God who calls us to be, not fair, but generous beyond expectations. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION In the early years of the church, most people never availed themselves of once-in-a-lifetime penance. Yet penitents were highly visible. They wore distinctive garments or chains, and they were relegated to special zones in the church. They might be dismissed from the Sunday assembly after the Word, forbidden to join in the Prayer of the Faithful or the Eucharist. This dismissal was done with great affection and tenderness as the bishop laid his hands on the heads of the sinners. During Lent almost everyone would identify with penitents by clothing, insignia, or by following the penitents regular diet. Rather than sit in judgment over them, the church desired to intercede for them before the Lord. Let Mother Church weep for you and wash away your sins with her tears, said St. Ambrose to his penitents in Milan. Ambrose liked to think of them as Jonah in the whale, meditating on his errors. In a letter to his sister he said that Jonah is also a sign of Christ in the tomb, and so he had great faith in the penitents future proclamation of the Resurrection with their reclaimed status in the assembly. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. TODAY S READINGS First Reading Turn to the LORD who is generous in forgiving (Isaiah 55:6-9). Psalm The Lord is near to all who call upon him (Psalm 145). Your generosity helped make the day extra special for our parishioners. Also, special blessings to those who worked hard preparing the food and games. Fun, food & fellowship was at it s best because of all of you! Today Jesus is saying to us: Why are you idle? Go into my vineyard. Family, where the last will be first, is the vineyard entrusted to us in today s gospel. Successful families are constructed by laborers, who work hard on family relationships, because the wages at the end of the day are priceless. ~ Bud Ozar
