This Holy Day of Obligation was first celebrated by the Church as early as the 5 th century of the Common Era. Dogmatically defined by Pope Pius XII in 1950, the Assumption asserts that the Virgin Mary, having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul into heavenly glory. The Blessed Mother remains for us an example, a role model and a light on the path as we seek, like her, to be disciples of her Son. May the Holy Mother of God pray for all of us now and always that we may aspire to emulate her. Second, I would like to take the opportunity to congratulate Deacon Terry Philpott of our Parish, as he celebrates his 80 th Birthday on Friday in the same year that he celebrates his 40 th year as Permanent Deacon in our Parish and Diocese. Congratulations, Deacon Terry and thank you for everything you do for our Parish! Third, yet not nearly as significant, August 15 marks my 10 th Anniversary of service at St. Peter s Parish as Organist and Director of Music and Liturgy. I began my work here on August 15 th, At all Masses that weekend, I sang the Ave Maria to introduce myself to you and the community. On this Feast of the Assumption, I will again sing that prayer in honor of our Blessed Mother and, in doing so, ask her to bless this Parish, its Priests, Deacons, Sisters and all its People. I will also pray that she continues to pray for me that I may be a good servant of God s people here. Since 2004, I ve worked for three Pastors, and with many priests, deacons, sisters, teachers, ministers, singers, instrumentalists, students and others most especially the people of this Parish with great joy and fulfillment in my life and ministry. St. Peter s is in the heart of the rhythm of my life and I am humbled and grateful for this Parish and Community. Much of the past ten years seems like a blur to me, days upon days at times. Other moments stand out for me. I can t forget and often pray for those whose weddings, funerals, baptisms, first communions and confirmations I ve been part of. I think of Fr. John Brennen, Msgr. Edward Dunn, Sr. Pat Vaira and Sr. Grace Straub often, and equally often I think of the Choir Members and musicians who ve come and gone during my time Vinnie, Rita, Eileen, Marilyn, Rose, Ed, Jean, Hermine, Dick and Bob of those who cannot sing with us any longer because of age or infirmity you all know who you are. I am grateful for the many friends I have in our Music Department and in our Parish and you all know who you are. I am blessed to be here and to be able to do something I love so much. My prayer every day here has been and continues to be, Lord, make me a good servant of your people and a good musician in your service, too. On this occasion, would you pray with me, too? Pray to our God and Redeemer that I may succeed in the ministry to which God has called me and, please, ask the Blessed Mother to intercede for me as well, that I may always worthily sing the praises of her Son. Mike Zacharias, former associate pastor of St. Peter s, is planning a pilgrimage to Italy. The group will be leaving for Italy on Monday, April 13, 2015 and returning on Friday, April 24. While in Italy, the group will spend seven nights in Rome. And, as if Rome is not enough, we will also be spending three nights in Sorrento a small seaside town built on cliffs overlooking the Bay of Naples. From Sorrento, we will take day trips to the ancient city of Pompeii and the Isle of Capri. Can you imagine yourself sipping Italian wine in the evening while overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea? 7 Page Eight St. Peter Catholic Church, Mansfield, Ohio August 10, 2014 PRESENCE It is difficult to be truly present to another. We speak of putting in an appearance or showing up. Even when we arrive, we are often distracted. We think ahead, or we review an unsettled past. Nonetheless, we are at our best when we truly show up. We are most fully ourselves when we are absorbed in something worthy of us: creative work, good conversation, prayer. In these instances we are wholly ourselves and wholly outside ourselves. Elijah knew this kind of engagement. He was one of God s great prophets. In today s first reading, he follows God s command to journey to that most holy place, Mount Horeb. And there in great silence, Elijah encounters God. As for Peter and the apostles, they discover the presence of God after the storm at sea. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Over the last several weeks, the history of confirmation has been set out as a rite following baptism and preceding First Communion. Eucharist was a sacrament of spiritual maturity, attuned to the legal age of majority, which was considered to be fourteen years or so. Medieval bishops were often generous, if not especially pious, in seeing to it that children were confirmed before adulthood. A pattern more familiar to us surfaced in the Diocese of Toulon in France in 1748, where it was decreed that children are to be confirmed only after receiving First Communion. This was an amazing shift in practice that undermined centuries of theology and tradition by which confirmation was seen as a bridge between font and table. The innovation swept through France and across Europe, despite constant complaints from Rome. French-trained bishops like Cheverus of Boston and Carroll of Baltimore, founders of the American church, established the practice here. The order of the sacraments was thus disrupted in France and in the United States, and remained an eccentric exception to the rule until big developments in Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. The demands of family can be so overwhelming we feel walking on water would be easier. When Jesus was pressured, he dismissed everyone, so he could be by himself and pray.
