Browns fans have longed for a Super Bowl berth for five decades. Indians fans for a place in the World Series since the mid-20th century. Think of the passage of years. Mansfield is 206 years old. Ohio is 211 years old. Our great American experiment in democracy is only 238 years in the making. By comparison, those sorts of years are paltry if you stack them up against the 14 to 15 centuries or so between the birth of Moses and the birth of Jesus. When it came to waiting in hopeful expectation, the Jews of Jesus' day would have laughed derisively, and rightly so, at the complaints of those of us who are ardent and long-suffering fans of the Brownies and the Tribe! So it is that we can understand the much longed-for Messiah was expected to be a lordly, earthly king, great in majesty and power, who would raise up an army and overwhelm the foes of Israel. Small wonder it is that after centuries of oppression by Greeks, Romans, Egyptians, Persians, Babylonians, and other nations, the Israelites looked for someone to deliver their nation from the clutches of its enemies. And small wonder it is that when the Messiah came there were few who recognized him and few who would have believed him to be the savior of anything, let alone an entire nation. Even so, and in spite of our peculiarly short view of history, as we enter Advent, are we so different? We dream of heaven and a place and time when all our wounds are healed. We long for a day when all our hopes and dreams will come to pass; a world of peace and love when disease and hatred are no more. We envision a time when starvation and privation are distant memories; when all people can stand tall and whole in the dignity and glory of the image and likeness of God. Yet I sometimes wonder if the puzzlement of Jesus' contemporaries isn't ours as well. The Christ who comes to us is the same Christ born in Bethlehem two millennia ago: a weak, vulnerable infant born in a stable and certainly not a king of majesty and might. Would we recognize him? Would we believe? An overlooked reality is that Christ is present in the world already, waiting to be recognized by those who look for him. Jesus lives in us, if we really believe the faith we profess. We are the hands of Christ. We are his body. We who are the frail, the illtempered, the old and young, the rich and poor, the healthy and the dying, the convict and the police officer, the sinner and the saint -- we are all part of the Body of Christ. We are all called to bring Christ to the world; to proclaim his Good News to all and to show his merciful, open-armed love to all. This Advent, then, let none of us say we cannot be Christ to others. Let none of us believe we cannot offer ourselves in his service and in the building of the Kingdom of God. Let us all recognize that his strength is perfected in our weakness if we but say yes to him. And let us all resolve, then, as our Advent goal to choose to be more his presence in the world and more his blessing to one another, forgetting our failures and keeping our eyes fixed on him, knowing that we are his hands of blessing and that we are his arms of loving embrace and forgiveness. May your Advent season be blessed! Bill Johnson

7 Page 8 St. Peter s Catholic Church, Mansfield, Ohio November 30, 2014 WATCH! Watch! This word occurs three times in today s Gospel passage. Moreover, it is placed at significant points: the beginning, the center, and the end. Though this is technically a parable, it is quite short (four verses). The threefold repetition of watch leaves no doubt as to what the story is about. We often think of Advent as a time of waiting, but it truly is a season of watchfulness, a very active form of waiting for the coming Day of the Lord. It is that day, more than Christmas day, that the Christian community faithfully expects, using all of our gifts and talents for this purpose, as Paul reminds us in the Letter to the Corinthians. When we use these gifts in faithful watching and expectation, we become like the servants of the parable, set to their tasks, not waiting around idly, but engaged in the master s work until his return. May our Advent be a time when we return or rededicate our lives and our communities to this work the active and diligent faithfulness that the Lord will expect to find. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Each of the seven sacraments, like other aspects of the Church s pastoral plan, is an attempt to be faithful to the image of Christ we discover in the Gospels. Anointing of the sick is rooted in Jesus saving deeds of healing and even rescue from death. What is your favorite encounter of Jesus with a sick person? Often, it seems that Jesus would go at once to the person in a crowd who was in the most pain, in the deepest need. A man born blind, Peter s motherinlaw, a woman afflicted by years of uncontrollable hemorrhages, a little Roman girl beloved by her soldier father, a crippled man lowered from the rafters, and even a man who lost his ear to a swinging sword in the garden of agony. This list reads like an admissions chart in an emergency room, and perhaps that is the point. The whole human experience from childhood to old age, from sudden catastrophic illness to chronic debilitating conditions, is represented by those for whom Jesus has such great compassion. This we can name a treasure of tradition with a capital T. We are a people of compassion for our sick, who reach out in tenderness to listen, to keep vigil, to strengthen, to touch with reverence, and to anoint with precious oil. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. Day Care Services available for children ages 1 to 5 years old during the 9:30 and 11:30 Masses on Sundays. A parent supervisor is available. Please enter from the parking lot behind the high school off Championship Drive to drop off your little one.
