I would like to take some time to reflect on my position here at St. Peter s. We have almost completed one academic year and I have acquired new knowledge, strength, and insight. I have a great appreciation for our students. They shared their recess time with me when I was unable to walk, reading me their favorite stories, pushing me around the halls in my wheelchair, bringing birthday treats to sweeten me up, sharing designated pew time with me in church, explaining edible science projects with me, grading health projects, and seeing their beautiful smiles in the morning. This is only to mention a few of my wonderful experiences at St. Peter s! Being a Principal is caring about the students and seeing them grow academically and spiritually. Change is difficult for everyone and many changes occurred throughout the school year. We are examining new readers, writing and spelling textbooks. We have mapped out the new standards and developing uniform assessments. We have increased our use of technology in all grade levels. You would be amazed at the incredible projects completed with the use of computers and ipads. I have observed students creating their own movies, writing their own stories, and taking pictures of something in the room that starts with the first letter of their name! (Those kindergarten students are superb. Many students are reading fluently at the end of that year!) The building and staff had many changes too. We secured the building with two new cameras, a rebuilt PA system, a kitchenette for teachers, and a new floor in the music room. We hired five new teachers which brought new life to the school. All in all, St. Peter s is a fantastic place to be! Pray for all of us as we close down the year. Have a wonderful summer and God Bless. Annual Catholic Appeal UPDATE: Thank you to all who have responded to date to this year s Diocesan Annual Catholic Appeal. 7 Page Eight St. Peter s Church, Mansfield, Ohio May 11, 2014 FOLLOWING THE GOOD SHEPHERD The joyful tone of the past three Sundays of Easter is a little darker today. All three readings remind us of suffering, death, and sin. We, like Peter s audience in the first reading, can ask, What are we to do? And the answer will be the same: we must reform. Or, as Peter says in his first Letter, we have strayed like sheep and must return to the shepherd. Jesus describes himself as a shepherd in today s Gospel, and we know it was one of the earliest images of Christ in the apostolic church. Today s passage continues the darker theme of the first two readings. Danger lurks and the sheep need protection. They might follow a false leader; they might be stolen or destroyed. Only in Jesus Christ will we be safe. Only in him will we have eternal life. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Every rectory office has received a panicked phone call from a person who has been invited to serve as a godparent, or from someone newly engaged, who suddenly needs to get confirmed. While the lack of confirmation is not an obstacle for marriage, it is for godparenting. Many are surprised that the Church seems to be looking for a kind of sacramental seal on one s baptism before the door opens fully to this ministry. Yet if you think about it, would you want someone to guide you to a place that he or she had not yet been? A godparent has to be someone who has been there and knows the way. Although signet rings and wax seals have passed from use, our society depends on seals of approval ranging from certificates of quality to the familiar safety seals on medicines and foods. While Eucharist is the seal of the sacrament of baptism, there is a sense in which one s Christian initiation is also incomplete without confirmation. Have you been confirmed?
