May Easter joy be in your heart, with your families, and in your homes! We welcome you every weekend for worship and praise! In the words of Justin, martyr of the second century: It is on Sunday that we all assemble, because Sunday is the first day: the day on which God transformed darkness and matter and created the world, and the day on which Jesus Christ our Savior rose from the dead. We enter now into The Great Fifty Days of the Easter Season. As Christ strengthened the faith of his apostles and disciples after his resurrection, we are strengthened throughout this season of joy through Word and Sacrament! We enter the season of light, the season of the promise of eternal life, the season of rebirth. It is the season in which we celebrate the new covenant, established in the Eucharistic Liturgy (the Mass). We also rejoice with the newest members of our parish community those who became Catholic at The Great Vigil (Holy Saturday night). My prayer for you is that the Spirit who has sustained you in prayer and practice over the past eight months strengthen you in the years ahead. The gifts of the Holy Spirit are full of power! Every Christian is capable of becoming a saint. For others, if this past Lenten season has brought you to a deeper appreciation of your faith, believe that it will continue to be strengthened by the Bread of Life, who has promised to remain with us! Many will have family celebrations this day. As you gather with family and friends to enjoy a festive meal, be gracious to one another. I offer the following prayer for your use at table, to share in gratitude: Gracious and Risen Lord, you promised to be with your disciples whenever and wherever they gathered as two or three or more. You also promised to be with them in the breaking of bread. The bread you give us is the Bread of Life. Give us this bread always! May your abiding Spirit be with those who believe in you, in your life, in your salvation won for us. Bless our meal, our family, our friends, and all who are in need. May all who share this meal and those who continue to be strengthened by the Eucharist come to share the fullness of Easter joy when we are called to eternal life. And bless those who have prepared this meal! We ask this through Christ our Risen Lord! Amen! Happy Easter from all at St. Peter s Parish!! Father Gregory Hite, Pastor Parish Office Hours will be: 8:30 am - 5 pm Holy Saturday, March 30 Closed Easter Sunday, March 31 Our buildings will be CLOSED to ALL activities on: Easter Sunday

Tom: On March 30, the office of the Bishop announced that I am being reassigned. Beginning this summer, my new assignment will be at Mount St. Mary s Seminary in Cincinnati, also called the Athenaeum of Ohio. The Diocese of Toledo has sent seminarians there to study for a long time. Among the alumni are Fr. Hite and Fr. Borgia. I will be part of the formation team and be teaching some courses to the young men preparing for priesthood. I am looking forward to this opportunity to be a part of the lives of these seminarians. My previous experience in the seminary in Africa reminds me of the hope that new vocations give to the Church, and the energy and zeal which they bring to the ministry. Please keep me in your prayers as I continue my priestly ministry in this new assignment. With regard to the assignment of a new associate for St. Peter s, nothing has been announced as yet. When an appointment is made, I am sure that Fr. Hite will be quick to share the information with the parish. TUITION CREDITS -- Earn now for future years! If you have very young children and you plan on enrolling them in St. Peter's School in the coming years, it is possible for you to start accumulating tuition credit for the point in time when they will be a student at St. Peter's School. Call the Parish Center office or the tuition manager Tracey Williamson at for more information on how you can begin earning tuition credit dollars right now! ST. PETER'S CATHOLIC SCHOOL BROCHURES The St. Peter's Catholic School full-color, tri-fold brochure provides prospective parents and students a brief but thorough overview of the mission, academic, athletic and extracurricular programs, and facilities that our school offers. Every year, we ask parishioners, school parents and alumni to consider displaying St. Peter's Catholic School brochures in their office or place of employment. If you are interested, please contact Kathy Morris at x2110 or morris.kathy@myspartans.org. GARDENERS SPRING MEETING Last year when I asked for volunteers to assist with gardening around the parish and school plant, our veterans came to the rescue, as well as a number of new parishioners. I remain grateful for your service to our parish. This is a huge campus, and we want to keep it a beautiful place in our community! Spring is right around the corner, and I thought it might be helpful for all volunteers to meet. Our agenda is quite simple: a) to meet each other; b) to know what areas of the parish plant are currently being covered; c) by whom; and d) to anticipate what costs may be involved in continuing to beautify the campus over the spring and summer months. Clean up days should probably be first on the agenda. It would be helpful to me (as Pastor, who also loves gardening) to know who s taking care of what and how to contact you if someone wants to help or assist. I suspect there are many gardeners who share this passion, and sometimes there is a transition of volunteers either by I just can t continue, or I m off to college! Currently, we are organized much along the lines of the Adopt-A-Highway program. Everyone is given their area or garden to tend. Our goal is not to establish set times or days of care, but instead to ensure a neat, clean appearance of the property at all times. So... let s meet and communicate with one another!! I would like to have a meeting on THURSDAY, APRIL 11, AT 6 PM, in the ST. CLARE ROOM (of the FRANCISCAN ACTIVITY CENTER). If you cannot make the meeting, please provide the Parish Center (prior to our meeting) your contact information, and the areas you have cared for in the past. This will be helpful. Also, new volunteers are welcome! Saint Fiacre, patron saint of gardeners, and Saint Francis of Assisi, pray for us! Father Hite Advertiser of the Week Joyce Buick GMC 1400 Park Ave. West

8 Page Eight St. Peter s Church, Mansfield, Ohio March 31, 2013 Easter Sunday EASTER ENERGY On Easter morning when the disciples saw the evidence of the Resurrection, they did not at first grasp it. John reports that they did not yet understand the Scripture that he had to rise from the dead. We, on the other hand, have both scripture and church tradition to teach us. Jesus Christ s resurrection is at the core of our Christian faith. All of today s readings tell us how compelling this event was for the first Christians. There is great energy in all the readings. Peter preaches with authority and conviction. Paul calls for Christians to change their lives. In the Gospel reading we see Peter and John in a footrace to reach Jesus tomb and see with their own eyes the evidence that they still could not understand or completely believe. How can some of this Easter energy be restored to us today? Do we let the astonishing news of the Resurrection touch us now? Does it call us to action? To deeper faith? To conversion? What new life will be reborn in us and our parish community this Easter morning? Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Over the centuries, the Church has demonstrated a wonderful ability to adopt a culture s favorite symbols and customs and assign them new meaning. Easter eggs have a very ancient pedigree: nature s perfect package, emblem of new life, dyed and decorated and given as gifts in ancient Egypt, Rome, China, and Persia. Just as the long hard winter is over, the egg bursts with promise of life and nourishment. Long ago, Christians came to see the egg not as a symbol of spring s rebirth, but of ours, and as a sign of Christ s tomb. A Polish legend says that Mary, in compassion for the soldiers at the cross, gave them eggs, but that her tears stained their shells with brilliant color. Legends have their origin in tales told around a hearth, but they often contain a profound truth. The idea of Mary, the first Christian, engaged in a merciful act of forgiveness and tenderness even in the shadow of the cross, describes the age-old wish that Christ Easter in us. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. TODAY S READINGS First Reading Peter is an eyewitness: The Lord is risen (Acts 10:34a, 37-43). Psalm This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad (Psalm 118). (1) Second Reading All who are baptized, set your hearts on heaven (Colossians 3:1-4) or (2) Second Reading Christ our Passover is sacrificed; therefore let us celebrate (1 Corinthians 5:6b-8). Gospel Three witnesses, Mary, Peter, and John; each responds to the empty tomb (John 20:1-9) or Luke 24:1-12 (or, at an afternoon or evening Mass, Luke 24:13-35). READINGS FOR THE WEEK Monday: Acts 2:14, 22-33; Ps 16:1-2, 5, 7-11; Mt 28:8-15 Tuesday: Acts 2:36-41; Ps 33:4-5, 18-20, 22; Jn 20:11-18 Wednesday: Acts 3:1-10; Ps 105:1-4, 6-9; Lk 24:13-35 Thursday: Acts 3:11-26; Ps 8:2, 5-9; Lk 24:35-48 Friday: Acts 4:1-12; Ps 118:1-2, 4, 22-27; Jn 21:1-14 Saturday: Acts 4:13-21; Ps 118:1, 14-21; Mk 16:9-15 Sunday: Acts 5:12-16; Ps 118:2-4, 13-15, 22-24; Rev 1:9-11a, 12-13, 17-19; Jn 20:19-31 Scan for St. Peter s Parish/ School website Easter Sunday March 31, 2013 When Christ your life appears, then you too will appear with him in glory. Colossians 3:4 FAMILY PERSPECTIVE: Millions of Christians around the world celebrate the Resurrection today. It all began simply on the first Easter with one person telling another: Mary told Peter and they believed. Faith is passed one person to another; it is caught, not taught and parents are the most effective persons to pass faith to their children.
