First, I am thankful for St. Peter s Elementary School. The students are wonderful, caring and eager to learn! I look forward to arriving here daily. Their smiles and friendships are priceless. Second, I am thankful for parents, volunteers, and staff that contribute to the educational process which include a variety of duties and chores. This goes from crossing guards, playground helpers, magazine representative, secretaries, maintenance staff, volunteers on the Building and Grounds Committee who listen monthly to my wants and needs and, also, to the many people involved in making a day run smoothly! I am blessed to work with all of you. Third, I am thankful for the leadership of Father Gregory Hite. He listens and helps me reflect on my daily tasks, undertakings and helps me persevere through my problems. He understands my s and checks in frequently. Father Jeremy is always there to lift up anyone who needs a smile and is great entertainment at ice cream socials! Sister Bernard Marie and Sister Paula are two very special people who work with us and support us throughout the school year. Fourth, I am thankful we at St. Peter s Elementary are all healthy and moving forward with our lives. God has blessed us. Lastly, I am thankful for my family and friends who support me as principal of St. Peter s Elementary School. It has been and, I hope, will continue to be a superb experience. Merry Christmas to all! May God bless all of you and keep you in the palm of his hand. Madalyn Bauer, Principal St. Peter s Elementary Mass schedule for the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Most Blessed Virgin Mary: Monday, December 8th, is the Feast of the Immaculate Conception. COLD & FLU SEASON To prevent the spread of influenza and other viruses, the U. S. Conference of Catholic Bishops and St. Peter s Parish ask everyone to please keep the following in mind: Anyone who is ill with a cough and fever is reminded they do not have an obligation to attend Sunday mass. In fact, it is better they do not attend Mass and infect others. Anyone who feels ill should not receive the Precious Blood from the Chalice. Eucharistic Ministers are asked to wash their hands before and after Mass and use hand sanitizer before communion distribution. Some people do not wish to shake hands at the sign of Peace. Please respect this. A bow of the head or wave shows consideration. We encourage everyone to practice good hygiene, especially washing hands on a regular basis. Last year we received phone calls about names not being listed on the "Christmas Donations for Floral Decorations" bulletin insert. Gifts MUST be made by December 16 to allow enough time to type and duplicate. Anything received after this date will be placed in the bulletin with the regular flower donation list. We thank you for your donations as our church is enhanced by the beautiful flowers. Envelopes were mailed to parishioners the last week of November, and there are also envelopes at the church entrances. GIVING THANKS - During this Thanksgiving holiday and throughout the year, St. Peter's School families and staff are thankful for all those who are committed to passing on the tradition of faith-centered education begun 146 years ago here in Mansfield. This commitment comes to our school children in many ways--prayers, involvement, financial support- -and from many people--parents, parishioners, alumni, board and commission members, volunteers, and extended family and friends of St. Peter's. THANK YOU for being an important part of the commitment to instill in our children the importance of contributing to their church, their community, and the world in positive ways and to model Christ in their lives. May your Thanksgiving be a time for you and your loved ones to celebrate all of God's blessings. Our parish home embraces many ministries which help to bring the newly born and newly baptized into our community, to educate and nurture our children and young people, to care for our ill and elderly and to support one another on the journey of life. I am ever grateful for the generosity of each of you who have supported by prayer, time, talent and treasure, St. Peter s Church and School, The Monsignor Dunn Foundation, the Annual Tuition Drive, our Athletic and Academic boosters and the many groups and organizations who give of their personal time and resources to help in building God s kingdom. I am humbled by the generosity of those who are gone and whose gratitude for God s gifts led them to remember us in their wills and estates. During this holiday season, may each of us reflect on the gifts we have been given and may God continue to bless each of you and your families. ~ Father Gregory Hite, Pastor Prayers & Blessings for Inactive Catholics Lord Jesus, for a variety of reasons, many people who once worshipped as faithful Catholics no longer attend Mass, receive the sacraments or embrace the faith. May your Holy Spirit continue to reach out to them, and may they always find in the Church a community ready to receive them once more, hear their concerns and grow together in faith. Amen.

8 Page 8 St. Peter s Catholic Church, Mansfield, Ohio December 7, 2014 EXILE Both Isaiah and Peter had the task of comforting and encouraging their communities during times of exile. The Israelites were in geographic exile from Israel; to them this was, in effect, the same as being in exile from their God. The early Christians, following the Resurrection, expected an immediate return of Christ in glory; they, too, felt in exile as the delay of the Second Coming grew longer and longer. All four of scripture s authors today Isaiah, the psalmist, Peter, and Mark hasten to help us see things in God s terms, not ours. They want us to know that we can never truly be exiled from God, or from God-among-us, since we know that when the faithful are gathered, Christ has come into their midst. Instead, we are encouraged today to do what we can from our end to shorten the time of our exile: to repent of our sins, to return our lives to the Lord, to live as people who seek the coming day of the Lord, when kindness and truth shall meet; justice and peace shall kiss (Psalm 85:10). Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Have you seen Antiques Roadshow on television? People bring attic treasures to experts for appraisal and possible cash. Catholic attics, or maybe Grandma s wall, often hold a sick call crucifix. It is a curiously bulky crucifix hiding a sliding panel and a secret compartment. Two tiny candles, a squeeze bottle of holy water, a stringy purple mini stole, a tube of prayers, and some cotton balls are all hidden inside. The cross folds up to form a mini altar that can be propped up by a sick person s bed. All that is needed is a priest with the oil of the sick and Holy Communion. Forty years ago, when these crosses enjoyed great popularity, the sacrament of the sick was often an encounter between priest and sick person alone, and often only in a last crisis of illness. Gradually, we are reclaiming the sacrament of anointing from this minimal, hidden expression. It is celebrated more richly and more often, even in the Sunday assembly, at every stage of illness and across a wide range of human suffering. The sick call crucifix is not a tradition, it is a curiosity from another time, but it reminds us of true tradition: we are a people who care for our sick, who accompany them in faith, and who sustain them with an experience of Christ s presence. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. TODAY S READINGS First Reading The rugged land shall be made a plain; the rough country, a broad valley (Isaiah 40:1-5, 9-11).
