They have not eaten for a long time. Do something for them. So I took some rice and went. When I arrived at their house, I could see the hunger in the children s eyes. Their eyes were shining with hunger. I gave the rice to the mother. She took it and divided it into two, and then she went out. When she came back, I asked her, Where did you go? She said, They are hungry also. Her neighbors were also hungry. What struck me most was not that she shared the rice but that she knew they were hungry. Because she knew, she shared. I did not bring more rice that night. I waited until the next morning so that they could experience the joy of sharing and loving. Love, to be true, has to hurt, and this woman who was hungry knew that her neighbor was also hungry. The neighbor family happened to be a Muslim family. It was so touching, so real. This is where we are most unjust to our poor: we don t know them. We don t know how great they are, how lovable, how hungry for that understanding love. Today God loves the world through you and through me. Are we that love and that compassion? God proves that Christ loves us that he has come to be his Father s compassion. Today God is loving the world through you and through me and through all those who are his love and compassion in the world. -Mother Teresa, Total Surrender May Blessed Mother Teresa inspire us as we take God s love, compassion, and mercy everywhere we go this week and share with everyone we meet. Sometimes the only way we can share is by simply being present, giving a smile, listening to someone s story. I found this Year of Mercy reflection in the bulletin of St. Mary of Mt. Fr. Raymond Mallett, OFM Conv., the Rector and Pastor of the Shrine of Our Lady of Consolation will be leading the Pilgrimage. Fr. Ray has led over 20 Pilgrimages to Holy Places. The dates for this Pilgrimage are November 3-12, We will visit Rome, Assisi, Orvieto and several other holy places. We will attend a Papal Audience; visit the Vatican Museum; the Scavi; the Sistine Chapel; several Basilicas walking through their Holy Doors. High School Students: Join us for YES or Youth Elect Service Weekend taking place June 24-26th. This weekend is an opportunity for incoming freshman to outgoing seniors to go out in the community to make a difference in our community through service. The weekend takes place in Willard. Its theme from Matthew 5:7, Blessed are the merciful, echoes Pope Francis warning that the practice of mercy is waning in the wider culture. In countercultural witness, therefore, the time has come, says Francis, for the Church to take up the joyful call to mercy once more. It is time to return to the basics and to bear the weaknesses and struggles of our brothers and sisters. Jesus affirms the same in today s Gospel. As I have loved you, so you also should love one another (John 13:34). Francis concludes, The Church s very credibility is seen in how she shows merciful and compassionate love. Jesus too asserts, This is how all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another (John 13:35). Thus mercy makes young the Church, the world, and everyone. 8 Page 8 St. Peter s Catholic Church, Mansfield, Ohio April 24, 2016 TRUE CHRISTIAN COMMUNITY Can you imagine a world such as the one put before us in today s scripture readings? Communities of believers everywhere would support and encourage one another and be identified as Christians by the way they love each other. It would be a world with no tears, no death and mourning, no crying out in pain. Behold, I make all things new, we hear the Son of God say in the second reading from the book of Revelation (21:5). Is this world of John s vision only imaginary? Are these faithful followers for whom Jesus prayed only a savior s dream? Today they are put before us as a worthy goal. How much closer can we come to this vision of a true Christian community in our lives today? Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The French Revolution swept the church in France away in an astonishing way, stripping the nation of every possible vestige of the faith, not merely shuttering churches, but using them as staging areas for pagan raves and romps. While millions of faithful simply went underground and hung on for the ride, even the seven-day week was demolished along with the names of the months. What emerged from the chaos was the Napoleonic Code of 1792 governing church life, and therefore marriage law in France, French Canada, and elsewhere. The code makes civil marriage mandatory for all citizens. In practice, when the faithful marry, they go first to the City Hall. There, the mayor performs the civil marriage, usually accompanied by a patriotic speech about the duties of the citizen, particularly in the rearing of children. Then, typically after a lunch, everyone goes off to change into more festive attire for the wedding liturgy, featuring consent, the exchange of rings, and the nuptial blessing. Sadly, only a minority of citizens today celebrate even the civil form of the rite, and a fraction of those continue on to the church. For those who do celebrate the liturgy of marriage, however, there is near certainty that the spouses are active worshipers, and that they will later present their children for baptism. Rev.
