1 SAINT PETER S CATHOLIC CHURCH November 2, 2014 Pope Paul VI - One Step Closer To Sainthood Referring to Blessed Paul VI as a tireless apostle, Pope Francis recalled his predecessor s establishment of the Synod as a way of adapting to the growing needs of our times. When we look to this great Pope, this courageous Christian, this tireless apostle, we cannot but say in the sight of God a word as simple as it is heartfelt and important: thanks! he exclaimed as the faithful applauded. Thank you, our dear and beloved Pope Paul VI! Thank you for your humble and prophetic witness of love for Christ and his Church! During his pontificate, Blessed Paul VI led the Church through the sexual revolution of the 60s. It was in that time that he wrote his famed encyclical Humanae Vitae (Human Life) which reaffirmed the Church s stance on conjugal love, parenthood, and the Church s stance on contraception. Though facing opposition from both outside and inside the Church, Paul VI staunchly defended the design established by the Creator. It was his humility, where the grandeur of Blessed Paul VI shines forth. Before the advent of a secularized and hostile society, he could hold fast, with farsightedness and wisdom and at times alone to the helm of the barque of Peter, while never losing his joy and his trust in the Lord. 104 West First Street Mansfield, Mass Schedule: Saturday: 5:00 pm Sunday: 7:30 am, 9:30 am, 11:30 am Monday & Friday 5:30 pm Tuesday - Thursday 6:30 am Phones: Rectory & Parish Center: Convent: High School, Jr. High: Grade School, Montessori: Child Care Center: Ext Fax: Gifts to Msgr. All Souls day Belief in Purgatory Historically, the tradition of All Soul s Day identifies the general custom of praying for the dead dating as far back as 2 Maccabees 12: Although this was the common belief and practice of Christians in the first millennium, the custom of setting apart a special day for intercession for certain of the faithful on November 2 was only first established by St. Odilo of Cluny at his abbey of Cluny in 998 A.D. From Cluny the custom spread to the other houses of the Cluniac order, which became the largest and most extensive network of monasteries in Europe. The celebration was soon adopted in several dioceses in France, and spread throughout the Western Church. It was accepted in Rome only in the fourteenth century. While the 2 nd of November remained the liturgical celebration, in time the entire month of November became associated in the Western Catholic tradition with prayer for the departed; lists of names of those to be remembered being placed in the proximity of the altar on which the sacrifice of the mass is offered. This feast, of course, affirms our belief in Purgatory. The belief that after our physical death, we may not be prepared for the presence of God for as Scripture teaches, nothing unclean can enter the presence of God in heaven (Revelation 21:27). While we may be forgiven for our serious faults in this life, we may still need to be purified of our moral imperfections and also may need to grapple with the adverse impact that our immoral choices produced in this life. In fact, even if God did not demand this purification, it seems that our souls would demand it. As C.S. Lewis wisely wrote, Our souls demand Purgatory, don't they? Would it not break our heart if God said to us, 'It is true, my son, that your breath smells and your rags drip with mud and slime, but we are charitable here and no one will scold you for these things, nor draw away from you. Enter into the joy'? Should we not reply, If there is no objection, I'd rather be cleaned first.' And if He replied, 'It may hurt, you know', we would insist, 'Even so, sir.' If Christ was coming to visit your home, most likely you would find a few minutes to straighten the furniture, sweep the dining room floor, and take out the trash! (Continued on page 3 )

In fact, it is better they do not attend Mass & infect others. *Anyone who feels ill should not receive the Precious Blood from the Chalice. *Eucharistic Ministers are asked to wash their hands before and after Mass and use hand sanitizer before communion distribution. *Some people do not wish to shake hands at sign of Peace, please respect this. A bow of the head or wave shows consideration. *We encourage you to wash hands on a regular basis. All Soul s Day Belief in Purgatory ( Continued from page 2.) Purgatory, then, is a great act of God s mercy for our benefit. The Lord could handle us in all our dirtiness, but we could not possibly handle the brilliance of God with our dirtiness. There is also something profoundly human about desiring communication with the deceased. As C.S. Lewis also rightly said, "Of course I pray for the dead. The action is so spontaneous, so all but inevitable, that only the most compulsive theological case against it would deter me. And I hardly know how the rest of my prayers would survive if those for the dead were forbidden. At our age, the majority of those we love best are dead. What sort of intercourse with God could I have if what I love best were unmentionable to him? To cut ourselves off from our deceased loved ones in prayer would be to cut us off from our own humanity. All of this to say that the Catholic belief in Purgatory is quite justified and profound. It affirms God s mercy, our free will, the seriousness of our choices in life, and the human desire to communicate with those who have gone before us in death. It is also a great source of strength for those who grieve, knowing that even if their loved one might have left this life imperfect there is reason to be confident that after a time of purification, they will be ready to enter into the presence of God in heaven. 5 Page 5 St. Peter s Catholic Church, Mansfield, Ohio November 2, 2014 The annual St. Peter's Thanksgiving Dinner for the needy and those who will be alone will not be held this year. Only four committee members from last year's eleven committee members were available to help this year with the planning and organizing of the dinner. With the amount of effort required for the planning and organizing of the dinner, it requires more than four individuals. In addition, the amount of people being served dinners, over the past years, has diminished. At one point we were serving approx. 900 dinners and last year only a little over 300 dinners were served. There are now at least five other locations providing Thanksgiving Day dinners, nearby. We would like to thank all of the volunteer's who worked the day of the event, in the past. We have always had a great response for workers on Thanksgiving Day. The planning and organizing of the event is the issue. Fr. For more information contact Sheila at cre@willardoh.com or at Dear Parent(s)/Guardian, I have served as Pastor of St. Peter s Parish for a little over three years. I am blessed to be here! During that time, I have come to experience the quality Catholic education that our school has to offer. Learning occurs in a disciplined environment, where religious values infuse our Courses of Study. The school community is small enough to respond to the needs of individual students, yet large enough to prepare our young people for the post secondary educational experience and life s challenges. Qualified and dedicated faculty and staff give daily of their time and expertise to help shape an educational environment where each student feels valued and where children learn. We sincerely hope that you will consider St. Peter s School as you select a school for your child(ren). As a young boy, my father reminded me, Education is something that can never be taken from you. Why not consider the best education possible, in a Christian environment, where each person is valued as a son or daughter of God? We are pleased to inform you of the numerous opportunities to visit our campus throughout the year and we encourage you to visit us to see why St. Peter s offers an excellent program and remains a strong, viable presence in our community. Blessings to you and yours! Sincerely, Rev. Gregory R. Hite, M.S., S.T.L. Pastor and Superintendent ST. 7 Page 8 St. Peter s Catholic Church, Mansfield, Ohio November 2, 2014 LOOKING TO THE LAST DAY Today the Church remembers all who have walked the way of Christ and passed from this life. The readings all look to the last day, when we shall all rise from the dead and be reunited. The prophet Daniel announces words of warning and welfare. He cautions us against the judgment to come, but he also comforts us and assures us that all who live a life of virtue and justice will find life eternal. The reading from Romans reminds us that, because of Christ s passion, death, and resurrection and our entrance into that paschal mystery through baptism, we now share in the new life won by Christ. This recognition has repercussions: we need to live righteously now, that we might rise to life forever with Christ on the last day. In the Gospel Jesus pledges that all the Father has given him will not be lost. All the faithful will be raised to joy and live forever in the presence of God. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION For those of Mexican heritage, November 2 means celebration of el Dia de Los Muertos, or the Day of the Dead. One of the most important days of the year for many, they join All Saints and All Souls together, visiting the graves of babies and children on All Saints, since they are santitos (little saints) or angelitos (little angels). Flowers, their favorite toys, favorite music, and so on, are taken to them. The following day, people spend time some of them all day at the cemetery with their loved ones who have died. From the ancient customs of the Indians the families pray, talk with them, and take them their favorite food. It is a most solemn but joyful day. It is a day to celebrate Christ s victory over death: Death, where is your sting? There is a mocking of death as people make skeletons, candy that represents death, and Pan de los Muertos (bread of the dead) and consume them in a kind of role reversal. One of the customs is to build an altarcito (little altar) where one places mementos and pictures of those who have died. There are also favorite foods, candles, statues or pictures of favorite saints, books, and Bibles. Some parishes have begun to build an altarcito where all parishioners can join in honoring the deceased. A remembrance book can be placed to write names in. The altarcito is traditionally left up for the month of November. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. TODAY S READINGS The readings listed here are chosen from the broad selection available for this Sunday. First Reading The souls of the just are in the hands of God, and no torment shall touch them (Wisdom 3:1-9). Psalm The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want (Psalm 23). Second Reading Death is swallowed up in the victory given to us by Jesus Christ (1 Corinthians 15: 51-57). Gospel Rejoice and be glad, for your reward will be great in heaven (Matthew 5:1-12a). The CDs are an hour in length, great to listen to over and over again. The authors are converts who seek and find answers in the Catholic faith. Renew and revitalize your Catholic faith. You will be left wanting to hear more! A Family Perspective - Our loved ones, who have stepped through the door of death, are now at rest, free of all burdens. In going home to the Lord they brought their love and concern for us with them. Death cannot totally separate families; our love binds us together forever. ~ By Bud Ozar
