The Daycare, Montessori, and K-6 will be open from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. while the junior high and high school will be open from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m., with an important informational meeting in the Robert Frye Auditorium at 3:00 p.m. The Open House is an opportunity to see the programs available and experience firsthand what makes St. Peter s different by design. We will offer school tours and provide an opportunity for prospective families to meet teachers, students, and families who are part of our school community. So often you hear from me about what makes St. Peter s School such a special place for students. I invite you to read the following testimonials from people associated with St. Peter s School. We view Catholic schools as the complete package. The schools provide an excellent academic experience, but more importantly, the foundation on which they are based is a living faith in Jesus Christ. Our children s entire beings, their minds, emotions, and souls are nourished by Catholic schools. Paying for a Catholic education is not cheap. But if you believe that your children are your most important asset, and we certainly do, the money you spend on a Catholic education is the best investment you ll ever make. Jim Phinney & Ginny Corso, St. Peter s School Parents In addition to providing the opportunity to learn in the academic arena, St. Peter s School challenges the emerging young adult to think on what they want their lives to be in the moral, spiritual, and ethical sense. This opportunity is unique to parochial education. Daniel P.Moloney, Class of 1995 I am currently teaching students of former students. Although principals, curriculum standards, methods, and technology have changed in my teaching years, there is one constant. St. Peter s School cultivates individuals who perpetuate Christian beliefs through their faith, works, and worship. It is through education that a foundation of Catholicism has been built, and this education of faith, discipline, and academics has contributed positively to our community. I teach because thirty-seven years ago, Monsignor Dunn said yes to hiring me, and I am forever grateful that that yes gave me a blessed vocation I have adored. Karen Geiger, St. Peter s Teacher St. Peter s School means so much to me. What I like about it is that I get a good Catholic education and I can talk to anyone about anything. I also like that all of the teachers are kind and caring. I think St. Peter s is like a family and everybody gets along. Adam, St. Peter s Student For our parishioners whose children are not currently enrolled in our parish school, you are cordially invited to the Open House. Financial assistance is available for those parishioners who desire a Catholic education for their children but who might not be able to afford it. The students, faculty, and staff of St. Peter s School are grateful to our parishioners for their continued sacrifice and support of our school. Thank you so much! Mr. James Smith Elementary School Principal

4 Page Four St. Peter s Church, Mansfield, Ohio March 3, 2013 Adult Faith Enrichment Praying does not mean isolating oneself from the world and its contradictions, as St. Peter would have liked to have done on Mount Tabor, but prayer leads us back to the path, to action. Christian existence means to continuously climb up the mount for our encounter with God, so that afterward we can descent again filled with his love and strength to serve our brothers and sisters with the very love of God. These are some of the words Pope Benedict XVI gave at his final Angelus blessing. There could be no better explanation of what our lives as Catholics is to be and the grace we are given freely, by God. Enhance your prayer life, join us in one or all of the offerings this season. Monday evening discussions with Fr. Tom on Gaudium et spes ; book study of Reconciliation by Bishop Robert Morneau; The Catechism and Divine Liturgy presentations by Bill Johnson in April; and the many special Marian events in May. CANDLELIGHT VIGIL - Join us this Tuesday, March 5, at 7 p.m. across from the main entrance to Mansfield Correctional, State Route 13, for an hour of silent prayer. The following morning, the State of Ohio will execute Frederick Treesh. We pray for him, his victims, their loved ones, all involved in the execution process, and for an end to the violence of the death penalty. Park in the Lincare lot. PRAYER TO END THE USE OF THE DEATH PENALTY UNITED STATES CONFERENCE OF CATHOLIC BISHOPS Merciful Father, we ask your blessing on all we do to build a culture of life. Hear our prayers for those impacted by the death penalty. We pray for all people, that their lives and dignity as children of a loving God may be respected and protected in all stages and circumstances. We pray for victims of violence and their families, that they may experience our love and support and find comfort in your compassion and in the promise of eternal life. We pray for those on death row, that their lives may be spared, that the innocent may be freed and that the guilty may come to acknowledge their faults and seek reconciliation with you. We pray for the families of those who are facing execution, that they may be comforted by your love and compassion. We pray for civic leaders, that they may commit themselves to respecting every human life and ending the use of the death penalty in our land. Compassionate Father, give us wisdom and hearts filled with your love. Guide us as we work to end the use of the death penalty and to build a society that truly chooses life in all situations. We ask this Father through your Son Jesus Christ who lives and reigns with the Holy Spirit, one God forever and ever. 7 Page Eight St. Peter s Church, Mansfield, Ohio March 3, 2013 Third Sunday of Lent MERCY God is mercy. That seems to be the main message of the reading from Exodus. God has seen the suffering of the Israelites and promises mercy and rescue. From then on, God is to be known as the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Paul calls his readers to continue to grow in the faith. The God who rescued Israel also rescues them. As beneficiaries of God s mercy, Christians must keep on working, doing their part to become ever more trusting and loving people of God. The Gospel s second section is a homey story about God s mercy. Against the advice of the land owner, the vinedresser pleads for mercy and shows mercy to allow the poor fig tree yet another year to become productive. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Hollywood has given us an image of Moses slipping off his shoes before a burning bush. God has just called Moses by name, and so that Moses doesn t miss the meaning of this breakthrough in human history, God requires that all barriers to the experience be eliminated. If you ve ever tried to maneuver barefoot across hot sand, or pick your way along a rocky beach, you know how sensitive feet can be. Within the Church, there are religious orders with a custom of going barefoot, not merely to show poverty, but to be an outward sign of a desire for connection with creation, a desire to go through life alert to what God is doing. In early days, when reconciliation was a once-in-a-lifetime possibility, penitents often went barefoot for a long period of time as a sign of their conversion. Even today, people follow an ancient practice of slipping off their shoes to walk in the procession to the cross on Good Friday. It is striking that the first use of our newly-scrubbed feet from Holy Thursday night is to walk resolutely in the footsteps of Christ to the cross. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. TODAY S READINGS First Reading I have witnessed the affliction of my people in Egypt and have come to rescue them (Exodus 3:1-8a, 13-15) or Exodus 17:3-7. Psalm The Lord is kind and merciful (Psalm 103) or Psalm 95. Second Reading Those who think they are standing secure should take care not to fall (1 Corinthians 10:1-6, 10-12) or Romans 5:1-2, 5-8. Gospel I shall cultivate the ground around the fig tree and fertilize it; it may bear fruit in the future (Luke 13:1-9) or John 4:5-42 [5-15, 19b-26, 39a, 40-42]. FAMILY PERSPECTIVE: The owner of the fig tree was impatient because the tree did not live up to his expectations. In families there are those who don t live up to our expectations. Imitate the gardener and give them more time and help. Don t cut them out of your life. Love asks us to be connected, not productive.
