Each family s celebrations may have begun by the initial phone calls which indicated a consensus of whose place are we going to this year theme. Once that is decided, there was the contemplating of suggestions as to who will bring what?. Most of the relatives already know who makes the best pumpkin, cheese, or pecan pie while others know who can do the mashed potatoes with their dreamy gravy. Still others can offer up their prize winning dressing which can be stuffed (into the turkey for cooking) or not. Still others boast a new style of deep fried turkey which can simply melt in your mouth. And some families have the best pumpkin roll makers who can easily mix up this delightful dessert in a jiffy. All of these communiques are vital for the Thanksgiving Day Meal to be a huge success. I hope all of you had the pleasure of sharing some of these and other homemade delights for the festivities that this week provided. And then many topped off that major meal with a card game, an outdoor touch football event, or maybe even going to a movie together. This was the week which really helps families be just that and to strengthen them for life in general. And then there are some of us who are not into all the interactions of the family traditional meal and we do other activities. Some make arrangements to go visit others either in short or long road trips or via airlines or trains. Some may not be able to get home to family for this sharing and they re waiting for the Christmas Celebration. Some wait and check the mailbox to see if anyone has dropped them a line. Or they anxiously await the next for a seasonal greeting. I hope all have had time and the composure to at least reach out to another who has had a rough time in some way this year. Maybe only we know about their situation. Many are without loved ones who may have passed away in the last year. Still others sit alone due to loved ones having moved away. To these I wish them the power to say yes to an invitation to share some time with a new associate and to be open to a possible new friendship. And maybe the actions we took part in over the last few days might be a reminder to us all that evangelization about our Catholic faith had a chance to occur. We each may have been given that little bit of inner peace we might have shared with another, but might not have quite made it happen. The first reading from Isaiah today at Mass tries to assert that God wants us to all come together as one unit, one family, one nation under Him. Have we tried just a little to make this happen? Have we helped to turn the swords of warfare into the plowshares of peace? How might we do so in the coming weeks? St. Paul in the second reading emphasises the proximity of God s definitive act of salvation and that the final fulfillment of God s Plan of Salvation is near at hand. Have our actions this last week shown that we are focused on His law of love and not the desires of the flesh? Have we included this sense of urgency to our families that love is truly what makes the world go round and time is actually running out on each of us? Our humanity reminds us of this all the time. Just look at all the hospitals which do not empty during this Thanksgiving break nor the Christmas celebrations. (continued on page 3 )

Olivieri Today s Gospel points to preparation for end times. Jesus, Himself, tells His disciples to stay awake, be prepared, the Son of Man may come at any time. All the more reason for our Junior High and High Schoolers to have spent an hour of prayer on Election Day in Church a couple weeks ago. This Hour of Powerful Prayer was highlighted by Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, Prayers of Benediction, A Luminous Mystery Rosary, A Divine Chaplet and a Litany of the Saints. I do not know what the specific intentions of all the students were but I could tell by their quiet contemplation that their quiet petitions were offered up. I could tell they prayed for good outcomes in the election and for the many prayers deep in their hearts.i would say it was a good and holy hour to prepare for whatever their future may hold. God Bless the entire Spartan Family this first Sunday of Advent in preparation for Jesus Holy Coming at Christmas! Sincerely in Christ, Deacon Mike Wasiniak, Principal of St. Peter s JHHS CORRECTION FEED THE NEEDY The church basement will NOT be prepared in time for the December Feed The Needy program to serve meals to those in our community who need a hot meal. Typical comments: "My prayer life has a much deeper sense," "My time in prayer is no longer asking for one thing after another, but developing a close relationship with our Lord," "I've realized how I make time for everything else in my life, now I make time for God." The Psalms are at the heart of the Bible. They are prayers from God that help us learn to pray. The Holy Spirit inspired them. Israel sang them. Christ himself prayed them, as did our blessed Mother. Their words captivate the imagination and draw us into a deeply personal encounter with God. Discover a rich school of prayer for all life's circumstances. 8 Page 8 St. Peter s Catholic Church, Mansfield, Ohio November 27, 2016 BE PREPARED Be prepared. It s that simple. As this Advent season opens before us, the Lord Jesus summons us to stand ready for his coming. At this time of year much of our attention is focused on being prepared for the details that accompany the holiday season. We purchase gifts; we decorate our homes, inside and out; we prepare foods that we eat only during the holidays; we write and send Christmas cards; we attend holiday concerts; we prepare either to welcome family and friends into our homes or arrange for visits to their homes. We really can t escape the details that make up the season. Perhaps this Advent is a time to attend to all those details with a different spin. As we prepare to celebrate the feast of Christmas, why not be deliberate about acknowledging the presence of the Lord as we go about these tasks? The Lord often comes to us in wonderfully surprising ways. Let us be prepared. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Before the Second Vatican Council in the mid-1960s, Advent had a strong penitential tone, reminiscent of Lent. From as long ago as the fourth century, some Christians began a solemn fast on St. Martin s Day, November 11. This Saint Martin s Lent extended all the way to Christmas, and was widely followed in the dioceses of France and Germany, and in the Middle Ages in England. Fasting was required, and dancing and similar activities were banned for the duration. The fast had a social function, too, assuring that the winter food supplies would stretch into spring. At the Second Vatican Council, some bishops argued that a revival of the long winter s fast would give the Church a chance to establish the message and themes of the Incarnation long before the holiday hubbub took hold. This proposal didn t pass, and Advent emerged as a four-week period of reflection, expectant waiting, and joyful preparation for the coming of the Lord. The season has two principal phases, with the first beginning this Sunday. The second phase commences on December 17, when the liturgy begins to unfold the story of the Savior s coming. Interestingly, the Eastern Church maintains a strongly penitential note in Advent, which is called Winter Lent, The Nativity Fast, or Christmas Lent, and has laws forbidding people to absent themselves from liturgy from December 17 onward. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. TODAY S READINGS First Reading All the peoples shall stream toward the L house (Isaiah 2:1-5). Psalm Let us go rejoicing to the house of the Lord (Psalm 122). Second Reading It is the hour to cast off the dark and clothe ourselves in the light (Romans 13:11-14). Gospel Stay awake! Be prepared! The Son of Man will come when you least expect (Matthew 24:37-44). TIME OF PREPARATION This life is the time of our preparation for our future state. Our souls will continue for ever what we make them in this world. Anonymous A Family Perspective: In today s gospel Jesus advises: Stay awake, watch out, and pray for the strength to hold your ground when fearful and bewildering signs appear threatening your family. Resist being fearful; fear cripples! Instead pray for the strength to be courageous. ~ by Bud Ozar
