As I am writing this column our government has finally just ended another shutdown, many have called it a slim down, which we all endured for a couple weeks. Many leaders of Congress, both Democrats and Republicans, apparently met often attempting to end the stalemate. They tried to negotiate a settlement, decide on some sort of budget deal, reopen government agencies, argue the Affordable Care Act, and avoid an incredible default on the federal debt. Hopefully by the time that you read this bulletin significant agreements and solutions have been decided. However I am afraid we will see a lot of kicking the can down the road. That phrase has received a lot of usage the past several years especially in the political arena. Make a quick decision with a short-term solution and promise to address the bigger issue in the future. Applying an adhesive bandage when a tourniquet is needed! In last week s bulletin you received a couple of inserts: The Report of Financial Operations and a St. Peter s Properties Report. Both documents are evidence that we don t just kick the can further down the road here at St. Peter s. We prefer to identify, evaluate, and act!!! We strive to identify problems or opportunities, assess and evaluate possible solutions, and strategically plan to accomplish the respective goal. Through careful planning by our Properties Committee, Budget Committee, and our Parish Finance Council we are able to accomplish much. There are many buildings as part of our beloved campus and many are quite old. As a wise teacher just reminded me today that older buildings always need a lot of work. There is either constant preventive maintenance or frequent repair or replacement. One can t help but notice all the activity around our church and school buildings the past many months. Construction lifts, scaffolding structures, and work trucks! Oh My!! The bulletin insert will help identify the budgeted projects we have already successfully completed and those we anticipate this current fiscal year. John Kastelic, our Finance Council Chairperson, and I are speaking at all the masses this weekend. We want to keep you informed of our Parish & School financial operations. We will summarize the fiscal year which ended June 30. Total Income increased, Total Expenses decreased, all Diocesan Assessments were paid in full, and the Debt Relief Fund is significantly reducing the balance of our debt to the Diocese of Toledo. We will also briefly review budget items for this current fiscal year. There is a lot more we want to accomplish while continuing to be good stewards of our financial resources. Through your generous donations and tuition payments throughout the years we have been able to achieve many goals and we will continue to do just that. THANK YOU! Jerry Straub, Business Manager

Kim Quick or quick612@gmail.com Support Our Retired Priests: Please consider a donation to Perpetuate the Gift, the annual collection to support retired priests of the Diocese of Toledo. Once a priest retires he is responsible for his own personal expenses: medical, housing, car, clothing and food. Your gift of support given between October 1 and December 31 will also help by reducing the amount your parish contributes to the fund. A gift of cash or check can be sent to Perpetuate the Gift, PO Box 954 Toledo, OH or placed in the parish collection. A gift may also be made online at ourpriests.org. Our efforts to heal the wounds of society will depend on our capacity to love and to be faithful to our mission. The Holy Father is showing us very clearly that our struggle is not just a political battle or a legal problem, but that we must evangelize and humanize the culture, then the world will be safe for the unborn, the elderly and the unproductive. The Gospel of Life is a Gospel of mercy. If we are going to get a hearing in today s world, it will be because people recognize that authenticity of our lives and our dedication to building a civilization of love. We are called to live our lives as a service to others and commit our lives to give witness to the presence of God s love and mercy in our midst. ~ Seán Cardinal O'Malley, O.F.M. 4 Page Four St. Peter s Church, Mansfield, Ohio October 27, 2013 Adult Faith Enrichment This week s Quick Journey Through the Bible Bible Study unveils the approximate 40 years of the Egypt and Exodus Desert Wanderings. Although little is known about the time period, we do know that God worked many miracles to free Israel from slavery. In spite of this, His people refuse to fully trust Him. The forty-year period of Desert Wanderings is both a punishment and an opportunity to learn to trust God and prepare to conquer and live in the land of Canaan. During this time period, He presented His people (and us) the law of freedom, not the freedom to follow our blind passions, but the freedom to love, to choose what is good in every situation, even when to do so is a burden. (John Paul II), otherwise known as the Ten Commandments. A challenge to you, what kind of false gods does it free you from? Open Your Hearts to Life Prayer for the Innocents October 27- Trunk and Treat to take place in the parking lot at Resurrection Parish. All sixth through twelfth graders who are interested in helping out with this event should contact Elizabeth Wurm at as soon as possible. All families are invited and encouraged to join us from noon to 1: 30 pm. November 1 - Teen Night from 5-7 pm! All fifth through twelfth graders are welcome to come for an evening of fun and fellowship! It is taking place at Resurrection Parish and we will be attending Mass at 7 pm there. November 2 - NET RETREAT! This retreat is open for all young people in grades It is taking place at Resurrection Parish from 10 am - 4 pm. Eternal Father hear the cry of parents who mourn the loss of their child. Still the anguish of their hearts with a peace beyond all understanding. Through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of all tenderness and our Mother, strengthen their faith in You. Give them consolation to believe that their child is now living in the Lord. We ask this through Christ our Lord, who conquered sin and death, and who lives and reigns with You, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen. St. Peter s Respect Life Chapter will have THE BOOK OF INNOCENTS on the altar rail in front of the Blessed Virgin s altar for Pro-Life month, October. You are invited to record the name and lifespan of your child, lost to miscarriage, abortion, or stillbirth, with any thoughts and longings you may wish to write down. We continue to pray for you and these innocents. As we read in our pamphlet, With [God s] help, we can be more aware of the needs of those around us and open our hearts to all human life. I call heaven and earth today to witness against you: I have set before you life and death, the blessing and the curse. Choose life, then, that you and your decedents may live, by loving the LORD, your God, heeding His voice, and holding fast to Him. (Deuteronomy 30: 19-20a) We must begin a commitment never to intentionally kill, or collude in the killing, of any innocent human life, no matter how broken, unformed, disabled or desperate that life may seem. (Living the Gospel of Life, no. 21) Please remember in prayer Sister Patricia David who died Monday morning, October 21 at Our Lady of Angels. She was 76. 7 Page Eight St. Peter s Church, Mansfield, Ohio October 27, 2013 GOD S LOGIC IS NOT OURS Nobody will ever mistake the Bible for a logic textbook. We need to remember this when we approach today s readings. How can a God who knows no favorites have a chosen people, or give us the disciplines of fasting and almsgiving and then instruct us not to talk about them? God, in love and tenderness, knows how quickly we can get into a rut. The Spirit inspires passages like the instruction from Sirach and the parable in Luke to help drag us out of the rut of thinking that God s ways are our ways. Sirach poetically uses contrast to answer the question, Whose prayer will reach the lofty clouds of heaven? The answer? Those who are lowly on earth. Jesus amplifies this in his parable of the Pharisee and the publican. It is Spirit-inspired illogic that communicates today s message: God hears the voices of those who are ignored by the rest of the world. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Friday s Solemnity of All Saints and Saturday s Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed fit well at the beginning of November. The liturgical readings of this final month in the Church year are keyed to the end of time and the fulfillment of Jesus saving acts. Nowhere is this more fully celebrated than in Mexico, where November 2 is the Day of the Dead. Missionaries moved an ancient Aztec festival from midsummer to November, linking the festival to Christian themes. Today, it is a time for remembering the dead and celebrating the continuity of life, principally by festive picnics in cemeteries. There are special foods and games, and people socialize with other families and tell favorite stories about their dear ones. The sweetness of life is honored by sugary desserts and treats. Flowers, music, lights, and feasting assure that the day is not at all morbid. Traditionally, the day begins with Mass, a procession to the cemetery, and a morning feast. Most families have a special dinner with the pan de muerto, or bread of the dead. A toy skeleton is baked into the loaf, and the one who bites into it is considered lucky indeed. The dead are not feared, but deeply loved, and this joyful family feast points both to age-old customs and Resurrection faith. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. TODAY S READINGS First Reading The Lord is not deaf to the wail of the orphan, nor to the widow when she pours out her complaint (Sirach 35:12-14, 16-18). Psalm The Lord hears the cry of the poor (Psalm 34). Second Reading The Lord will rescue me from every threat (2 Timothy 4:6-8, 16-18). Gospel All who exalt themselves will be humbled; all who humble themselves will be exalted (Luke 18:9-14). If you do, consider donating them to Saint Peter's Parish so that they can be distributed to others for use. Any rosaries that you are willing to donate please drop off in the parish office. The rosaries will be used for the Youth and Adult Confirmation program.
