1 SAINT PETER CATHOLIC CHURCH September 8, 2013 PRAYER FOR THE YEAR OF FAITH Lord Jesus, you find us at the Door of Faith, inviting us to open our hearts to the gift of faith, so that we may know you, the Eternal Son of the Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit. We have heard this African proverb a thousand times but it still rings true to this day. In the Catholic Church, we truly and wholeheartedly believe that the first and the most important catechists for any child are his or her parents. After all, they are the domestic church and charged from the time of the child s baptism, to teach their children to know, to love and to serve God through their Catholic Faith. However, it does take a village. When children enter the Church they also enter a larger family. No longer are they just a part of their nuclear family but a part of their parish family and the universal Church. It truly amazes me how many people, giving freely of their time and talents, are involved in the raising of a child in the faith. This process of faith education begins at home, but at the prompting of their parents, who are moved by the Spirit, they are introduced to others who continue to grow in their faith. Who are these special individuals who help to bring our children, our most precious gifts, closer to God and closer to understanding what their calling is in life? They are our catechists. Our catechists are persons who volunteer their time and talents to assist parents in bringing their children up in the faith or help adults to learn more about their faith and, through their actions and words, help children and families find their way along their own faith journeys. Who are these catechists? The list is as varied as it is long. To start, we can spotlight all of our teachers and support staff in Saint Peter s School, from Daycare and Montessori all the way up to the high school. They include our teachers- from Theology to Math, from English to PE and all teachers in-betweenwho touch the lives of children there. It also includes our secretaries, our cafeteria staff, our maintenance staff, our coaches and all others who support the education of our students. Some may want to state that although these people are considered catechists, they are simply doing their job for which they get paid. Something that is often not stated enough is that those who work in a Catholic School are not there for the fame, the glory or the financial advantages- they are there because they have been called to a special ministry to show children the face of Christ in this world. The list of catechists does not by any means end there. We have a remarkable RCIA and Baptismal Preparation program which helps adults and young families come to know Christ and how to raise their families in light of His mission. Our superb Confirmation Preparation Team and Sacramental Team do an outstanding job around the year of helping our families be prepared for the sacraments that their children will receive. We have a topnotch group of volunteers who give of their time weekly to teach children in our PSR program and Children s Liturgy Program more about their faith, as well as those who volunteer to help at Vacation Bible School. The list is indeed varied, as it is long, and without each and every one of these people we could not do the fantastic job of catechizing our children and our families as we currently do. Next Sunday, September 15 th is Catechetical Sunday. This year s theme is Open the Door of Faith which is something that each and every one of our catechists does every time they minister to the adults or children of our parish. Next Sunday remember to say a special prayer for all our catechists as they are commissioned in their ministries, and take a special moment to thank a catechist or two for the important service they provide to the parish. Lastly, consider if you are being called to be a catechist in our parish- it is one of the most rewarding experiences you will ever have! 7 Page Eight St. Peter s Church, Mansfield, Ohio September 8, 2013 ATTITUDE CHANGE Today s readings ask us to re-think our attitudes and ways. The passage from the book of Wisdom reminds us that, when it comes to understanding, even the wisest person barely scrapes the surface of things. In Paul s provocative little letter to Philemon, the apostle praises Philemon for his understanding of the social order which included slavery and for his good treatment of Onesimus. Then Paul goes on to drop his bombshell. He tells Philemon that Onesimus is now a Christian and should be treated as such as a brother, an equal. What was Philemon to think? Today s Gospel tells us that if we are to follow Jesus, we must do some serious planning. Then, once all our planning is complete, we have to be willing to accept the fact that our plans are never enough. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION In recent years, there has been remarkable progress in drawing persons with disabilities into full celebration. Now it is generally accepted that worship places need accommodations such as ramps or elevators, large-print materials for those who are sightimpaired, and perhaps even an assisted hearing system or signing in American Sign Language. American Sign Language is not merely English translated into movement, but a distinct language with its own grammar, syntax (word order), and vocabulary. For this reason, the American Catholic bishops have approved American Sign Language (ASL) as an official language of the liturgy. Celebrating liturgy in our own language (the vernacular) means that liturgy must be accessible to all languages and cultures. The fact that Mass is celebrated this weekend in some places in total silence, but with the full participation of deaf people praising God in the movements of their hands, and sometimes even with a priest who is deaf, is nothing less than the Church being faithful to the image of Jesus, who made the deaf hear and the mute speak. Remember too that deafness is an invisible disability, and that there may well be people in your parish who are quietly yearning for Mass to be signed for them in ASL James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. TODAY S READINGS First Reading You sent your holy spirit from on high and thus were the paths of those on earth made straight (Wisdom 9:13-18b). Psalm In every age, O Lord, you have been our refuge (Psalm 90). Second Reading Paul asks Philemon to accept back his slave Onesimus as a brother (Philemon 9-10, 12-17). Gospel Which of you wishing to construct a tower does not first sit down and calculate the cost to see if there is enough for its completion? (Luke 14:25-33).
