The multiplication of the loaves and fishes is one of the passages from the Bible that almost everyone, Christians and non-christians alike, are aware of. The miracle, as it is described in the Gospel of Luke, is so clearly stated that upon hearing it we can almost picture the scene and the feeding of the multitudes under a hot summer sky in the desert. As one of the preliminary events to the Eucharist, it is not hard for us, as adults, to understand the significance of this event. For children, however, the story might seem a little more obscure. Although the age of reason in the Catholic Church is around seven years of age, it takes a lifetime to completely explore and fully understand the totality of the Eucharist and its significance in our lives. As we celebrate the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ this weekend, our hope is that all here learn to not only understand the Eucharist more, but come to appreciate its presence in our lives. For children, today s Mass might seem much like every other Mass. Although we know it is a very important occasion, the meaning may be lost in the smallest of our congregation. That is why it is so important to embrace opportunities to reinforce all teachings of the Catholic faith to our young people, especially those relating to the source and summit of our faith, the Eucharist. This summer, July 8-10, Saint Peter s is hosting its second Vacation Bible School. This year s theme is Fishers of Men, the focus of the three days is looking at Jesus miracles that lead us closer to the Eucharist. The three days also incorporate a special emphasis on the Eucharist, to provide our young people a better understanding of this tremendous gift from God and the place it has in our lives today. Vacation Bible School is open for all children who are in Pre-Kindergarten through fifth grade, and there is no cost to attend. There is, however, a registration form and medical form that needs to be completed for each child to attend that can be found on the parish website under the youth page, or copies are also located in the parish office. All registrations are due by July 1. We would love to have your child join us as we explore deeper one of the greatest mysteries of our faith! 4 Page Four St. Peter s Church, Mansfield, Ohio June 2, 2013 Historical Words Some people in history have been very pro-life, even when it wasn t the issue it is today. Thomas Jefferson once said, The first and only legitimate object of good government is the care of human life, not it s destruction. How pertinent that is for our society today. We could learn much from his wisdom, especially our legislators. Let us all pray every day that all human life will be cared for, not destroyed. ~ St. Peter s Respect Life Chapter Help! Call Resurrection Parish for registration form, The Eucharist is the source and summit of the Christian life. The other sacraments, and indeed all ecclesiastical ministries and works of the apostolate, are bound up with the Eucharist and are oriented toward it. For in the blessed Eucharist is contained the whole spiritual good of the Church, namely Christ himself, our Pasch. The Eucharist is the efficacious sign and sublime cause of that communion in the divine life and that unity of the People of God by which the Church is kept in being. It is the culmination both of God s action sanctifying the world in Christ and of the worship men offer to Christ and through him to the Father in the Holy Spirit. Finally, by the Eucharistic celebration we already unite ourselves with the heavenly liturgy and anticipate eternal life, when God will be all in all. 7 Page Eight St. Peter s Church, Mansfield, Ohio June 2, 2013 The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ APPRECIATING THE EUCHARIST For centuries today s feast was called Corpus Christi (the Body of Christ) and was observed on the Thursday after Trinity Sunday. In many countries it has now been moved to Sunday, so that more people may participate in its celebration. In its present form, the liturgy of this day focuses our attention on the meaning of the Eucharist that we celebrate so often. Today s reading from Genesis tells how Melchizedek, king of Salem, brought out bread and wine and prayed over Abram. Though it took place nearly two thousand years before Jesus, this event has long been used by the Church as an ancient foreshadowing of the Eucharist. The reading from Paul s Letter to the Corinthians is the same one we hear proclaimed on Holy Thursday, retelling the story of the first blessing and sharing of bread and wine at the Last Supper. Luke s tale of the miraculous feeding of the crowd in today s Gospel is also clearly intended to evoke the Eucharist. Thus today s readings give us three opportunities to deepen our appreciation of the Body and Blood of Christ. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION We owe today s beautiful feast to a valiant woman who suffered a great deal to establish a feast out of her love for the Eucharist. Juliana was a nun in Belgium in the thirteenth century. She served in a hospital for lepers. She became convinced through her prayer that the liturgical year was incomplete because it had no feast for the Eucharist. Her efforts were not welcome, and a supervising priest sought to punish her for promoting a feast that nobody wanted. He even had her accused of financial mismanagement and banished her from her convent. Shortly after she was exiled, the bishop approved the feast. It quickly spread through Europe. In those days, people very seldom received Holy Communion, and so the processions through the streets with the Eucharistic bread not only led to an awareness of Christ s hunger to be with us, but prepared the way for a deeper desire to receive Christ s Body and Blood in more frequent Communion. The feast grew rapidly, but Juliana disappeared into poverty and a hidden life. She ended her days as an anchoress, a woman living in seclusion in a room attached to a parish church. Imagine her delight at seeing us gathered at the table of the Lord on this day, aware of Christ s presence in our midst, sharing fully in Christ s Body and Blood. Our celebration today invests her struggle and sorrows with dignity and meaning. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. TODAY S READINGS First Reading Melchizedek brought out bread and wine and blessed Abram (Genesis 14:18-20). Psalm You are a priest forever, in the line of Melchizedek (Psalm 110). Second Reading Paul gives his description of the institution of the Eucharist (1 Corinthians 11:23-26). Gospel Jesus spoke to the crowd about the kingdom of God and then fed them with five loaves and two fish (Luke 9:11b- 17). READINGS FOR THE WEEK Monday: Tb 1:3; 2:1b-8; Ps 112:1b-2, 3b-6; Mk 12:1-12 Tuesday: Tb 2:9-14; Ps 112:1-2, 7-9; Mk 12:13-17 Wednesday: Tb 3:1-11a, 16-17a; Ps 25:2-5ab, 6-7bc, 8-9; Mk 12:18-27 Thursday: Tb 6:10-11; 7:1bcde, 9-17; 8:4-9a; Ps 128:1-5; Mk 12:28-34 Friday: Ez 34:11-16; Ps 23:1-6; Rom 5:5b-11; Lk 15:3-7 Saturday: Tb 12:1, 5-15, 20; 1 Sm 2:1, 4-8abcd; Lk 2:41-51 Sunday: 1 Kgs 17:17-24; Ps 30:2, 4-6, 11-13; Gal 1:11-19; Lk 7:11-17 Congratulations to all Graduates ~ Class of 2013!
