1 SAINT PETER CATHOLIC CHURCH January 19, 2014 O Jesus! meek and humble of heart, Hear me. From the desire of being esteemed, Deliver me, Jesus. From the desire of being loved... From the desire of being extolled... From the desire of being honored... From the desire of being praised... From the desire of being preferred to others... From the desire of being consulted... From the desire of being approved... From the fear of being humiliated... From the fear of being despised... From the fear of suffering rebukes... From the fear of being calumniated... From the fear of being forgotten... From the fear of being ridiculed... From the fear of being wronged... From the fear of being suspected That others may be loved more than I, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it. That others may be esteemed more than I... That, in the opinion of the world, others may increase and I may decrease... That others may be chosen and I set aside... That others may be praised and I unnoticed... That others may be preferred to me in everything... That others may become holier than I, provided that I may become as holy as I should Litany of Humility Rafael Cardinal Merry del Val ( ), Secretary of State for Pope Saint Pius X Reprinted from ewtn.com/devotionals Mass Schedule: Saturday: Sunday: Monday & Friday Tuesday - Friday 104 West First Street Mansfield, Ohio :00 pm 7:30 am, 9:30 am, 11:30 am 5:30 pm 6:30 am Phones: Rectory & Parish Center: Convent: High School, Jr. High: Grade School, Montessori: Child Care Center: Ext Fax: Gifts to Msgr. Catholics in Latin America and the Caribbean face many challenges, including violence and a lack of both clergy and lay leadership to witness to the gospel message. Your support shares the faith with those in need, including the youth of Holy Family Parish in San Miguel, El Salvador. These young people, at high risk for violence, often lack an education in values and critical-thinking skills. To address this need, the parish designed a youth enrichment program. Funded by the Collection, this program gives the youth an opportunity to share their faith and break the cycle of violence in their neighborhoods. Please give generously to next week s Collection. Resurrection Parish is celebrating a Mass for LIFE on Wednesday, January 22, at 9:30 a.m. St. Peter s Respect Life Chapter CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK The theme for National Catholic Schools Week 2014 is Catholic Schools: Communities of Faith, Knowledge and Service. The annual observance begins Sunday, January 26, and continues through the week. Schools across the country typically celebrate Catholic Schools Week with Masses and other activities for students, families, parishioners, and the community at large. The theme encompasses several concepts that are at the heart of a Catholic education. First, schools are communities small families in their own right, but also members of the larger community of home, church, city and nation. Faith, knowledge and service are three measures by which any Catholic school can and should be judged. The new logo features a swirl of colors interacting around a cross, which is at the center of all Catholic education. The vibrancy of the colors and the movement and shadows in the logo portray the innerconnectivity and community life that are present in our Catholic schools. The commitment of parishioners, our priests and Franciscan Sisters, parents, students, staff, administration, alumni and community friends has enabled St. Peter s School to thrive for nearly 150 years. As we celebrate Catholic Schools Week with various activities, we also continue to pray in thanksgiving for your support in creating tomorrow s church and community leaders with your investment in our school. Ohio Eye Associates 466 S. Trimble Rd I wish as many parishioners remembered my homily as remembered the altar server with the green hair.

7 Page Eight St. Peter s Church, Mansfield, Ohio January 19, 2014 THE CATHOLIC CHURCH HERE COMES EVERYBODY This popular way of describing the universality of our Church is a theme of today s readings. The prophet Isaiah tells of God s servant who will be the light of the nations. It will not be enough for this servant only to bring back the survivors of Israel s dispersion and captivity. God s salvation must reach to the ends of the earth. Saint Paul writes to a local church of mainly Gentiles and presumably former sinners of all kinds in Corinth. He greets them and tells them that they are to take their place with saints everywhere in the name of Jesus Christ. The Gospel reading from John tells of Jesus commissioning by the Father in the Holy Spirit to bring salvation to all, to take away the sins of the world. This Chosen One has come to baptize the world in God s Spirit. Everybody. As you hear these words, consider your own task to bring the good news of salvation to everyone you will meet in the coming days, weeks, years. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The symbols and actions of baptism evolved around the experience of adults dying to old patterns of life and rising from the waters of baptism as new creations. As for newborn babies, at first it was desired to wait until the following Easter, when they could be baptized, anointed with chrism, and given a taste of the Eucharist in association with adults. The Church was always willing to baptize adults in emergency situations outside the Easter timetable, and in time, since infancy itself was a life threatening situation, the baptism of babies became commonplace. As with the emergency adult baptisms, it was required that parents bring the child, as soon as health was recovered, to the bishop for the full menu of sacraments. The very real fear of death for infants thus created a situation in which the three sacraments drifted apart from each other, and away from their original, adult celebration at Easter. Today, at last, we know a great deal about how our practices evolved. This knowledge is reshaping how we celebrate Easter, how we receive adult faith, and how we structure the faith journey of children. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. TODAY S READINGS First Reading The glory of the LORD shows through Israel, a light to all nations, that salvation may reach to the ends of the earth (Isaiah 49:3, 5-6). Psalm Here am I, Lord; I come to do your will (Psalm 40). Second Reading All those who call upon the name of the Lord are called to be holy (1 Corinthians 1:1-3). Gospel John the Baptist testifies: The one who comes after me, on whom the Spirit comes down and remains, is the Son of God (John 1:29-34). READINGS FOR THE WEEK Monday: 1 Sm 15:16-23; Ps 50:8-9, 16bc-17, 21, 23; Mk 2:18-22 Tuesday: 1 Sm 16:1-13; Ps 89:20-22, 27-28; Mk 2:23-28 Wednesday: 1 Sm 17:32-33, 37, 40-51; Ps 144:1b, 2, 9-10; Mk 3:1-6, or any of a number of readings for the Day of Prayer Thursday: 1 Sm 18:6-9; 19:1-7; Ps 56:2-3, 9-13; Mk 3:7-12 Friday: 1 Sm 24:3-21; Ps 57:2-4, 6, 11; Mk 3:13-19 Saturday: Acts 22:3-16 or Acts 9:1-22; Ps 117:1bc, 2; Mk 16:15-18 Sunday: Is 8:23 9:3; Ps 27:1, 4, 13-14; 1 Cor 1:10-13, 17; Mt 4:12-23 [12-17] BEND, DON T BREAK When you encounter difficulties and contradictions, do not try to break them, but bend them with gentleness and time. St. Francis de Sales Year-End Contribution Statement If you want a statement of your 2013 donations, call the Parish Center. If you have received one in the previous year, there is no need for you to call as you will be on our list to send you one. The statements will be mailed at the end of January. Can you say I have testified Jesus is the Son of God? If you aren t talking about Jesus in your family, you aren t testifying. If you are not walking your talk, your children will see your words as meaningless. By: Bud Ozar
