1 SAINT PETER CATHOLIC CHURCH September 28, 2014 Francis of Assisi Now perfectly changed in heart and soon to be changed in body, Francis was strolling one day near the old church of St. Damian, which was nearly destroyed and abandoned by all. The spirit led him to enter the church and pray. Devoutly lying prostrate before the crucifix, stirred by unusual visitations, he found he was different than when he had entered. While he was in this affected state, something absolutely unheard-of occurred. The crucifix moved its lips and began to speak. "Francis," it said, calling him by name, "Go, repair my Church, which as you see, is falling completely in ruin. Francis was stupefied and nearly deranged by this speech. He prepared to obey, surrendering himself completely to the project. But since he considered the change in him to be beyond description, it is best for us to be silent about what he himself could not describe. From then on compassion for the crucified one was imprinted in his holy soul and, one may devoutly suspect, the stigmata of the holy passion were deeply imprinted in his heart, though not yet in his flesh. 104 West First Street Mansfield, Ohio Mass Schedule: Saturday: 5:00 pm Sunday: 7:30 am, 9:30 am, 11:30 am Monday & Friday 5:30 pm Tuesday - Thursday 6:30 am Phones: Rectory & Parish Center: Convent: High School, Jr. High: Grade School, Montessori: Child Care Center: Ext Fax: Gifts to Msgr. Beside this village ran a river which was large enough to carry some small water craft. The first day the priest arrived he sat by the side of the river. After just a short period of time, he saw a small raft floating down the river with a man who was in critical condition on top of it. The priest jumped into the water, pulled the man to safety and took him to the village where the people of the village nursed him back to health, provided him with his basic needs, and welcomed him into their community. Every day the priest went and sat by the riverside, and inevitably, every day another raft would come down the river with another person in critical condition which the village cared for and assumed into their community. The community soon became quite large with all its new members and they lived and worshipped together as one large family. The question that is inevitably asked, however, is to identify what the problem is with this story. Give up? No one bothered to go down the river to see what was making the people succumb to such terrible circumstances. In the Catholic Church we are all called to serve because we are bestowed with the offices of Priest, Prophet and King at our Baptisms. It is not a matter of if you have enough time or if you feel like it you should serve, but more of an obligatory commissioning that we are to be out helping our fellow brothers and sisters. Most of the time our service comes in the form of acts of charity where we give things to those in need: clothes, canned foods, money or the like. However, our obligation to serve others does not end there. We are also called to work for justice to help change systems which by their very nature are not conducive to helping people realize their highest potential as children of God. This is not to say that those who participate solely in charity are not living out their baptismal vows. We know that charitable acts, such as giving monetary donations to others, do have a lasting effect on those in need, and allow workers in those fields to help some of the most vulnerable in our society. The challenge is for us to look beyond what is the most convenient for us to do, and try to find ways to change systems of government, charitable aid systems and societal norms to try to find out not only how to help, but also how to alleviate the problems which affect our society in the first place. It is each of our jobs to strive to find additional ways to serve. We are very fortunate in Saint Peter s parish to have a vast variety of ministries in which to share our time and talents. If you have not yet found your mission in life, consider taking a look at the ministries webpage and looking at all the opportunities that await you! If you are already serving, we thank you for all that you do and ask you to ponder in what other ways you could help! Elizabeth Wurm, Director of Religious Education & Youth Minister

7 Page 8 St. Peter Catholic Church, Mansfield, Ohio September 28, 2014 NECESSARY REPETITION Spiritual teachers tend to repeat themselves, and to repeat other teachers. Maybe there really aren t that many different truths to tell. Just a lot of slow, sleepy human beings like us who need to hear the basics over and over. Consider today s readings. People complain that God isn t fair, and Ezekiel answers that God is more than fair. People choose their own fates, and people can change. Even evildoers can turn, do right, and live. Actions speak louder than words. A fresh new insight? Hardly. Paul tells the Philippians he would truly be encouraged if those who claimed to be believers would, in fact, look to others interests and not their own. The proof of the pudding is in the eating. A novel idea? I don t think so. In Jesus story of the farmer and his sons, everyone knows the one who said he wouldn t work but did is way ahead of the one who said he would work, but didn t. Talk is cheap. Heard that before? Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Over time, the severe form of one-chance penance collapsed under lack of enthusiasm for its burdens and its public nature. As ordinary Christians prayed for the great sinners, it must have occurred to them that they were sinners no less, and they required a form of penance also. The Irish came to the rescue, never having had a public form of penance, but inventing a system called tariff penance, which was completely private, available to everyone, and wildly popular. After a detailed confession, priest and penitent would lie on the floor before the altar and recite a number of psalms. The priest then pronounced a judgment, a tariff, giving a task or a prayer to complete before reconciliation. The surviving guidebooks for confessors make for hair-raising reading as the sins of which the Irish people were supposedly capable were catalogued and keyed to penances. Cattle or sheep rustling might require stripping down to sing psalms in an icy brook, for example, or adultery could be the occasion for rolling in a thicket of thorns. All of this might have stayed in Ireland had not the monks had a desire to travel, blazing across Europe with their theology and their rituals, and their sense that Christians needed strong medicine for sin and the assurance of God s forgiveness. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. TODAY S READINGS First Reading When the wicked turn away from their wickedness they have committed and do what is right, they shall surely live (Ezekiel 18:25-28). Psalm Remember your mercies, O Lord (Psalm 25). Second Reading Consider others as better than yourselves; look not to your own interests, but to the interests of others (Philippians 2:1-11 [1-5]). Gospel Tax collectors and prostitutes are entering the kingdom of God ahead of you (Matthew 21:28-32). Why do we think our opinion is dogma or fact? An opinion is only how we perceive a situation or how we feel comfortable doing something.
