2 Page 2 Through Zion s Window September 2018 On August 5th, Zion hosted a rest stop at The Best Dam Bike Tour for MS (150 mile bike ride that raises money for MS research and treatment). A BIG shout out and thank you to all our Zion rest stop volunteers and bakers. Shepard of the Hills Lutheran Church in Pewaukee is working with a group of volunteers at Shorehaven that turn these bags into sleeping mats for the homeless shelters and Family Promise. Marian Kluewer, Elda Wanglin and Beatty Zwieg have joined this group that meet on Tuesday mornings, they help by prepping the bags for this project. Once the bags are prepped they are cut, chained together and the volunteers crochet or weave them into 3x6 foot sleeping mats. Zion can help by saving their plastic shopping bags and bringing them to church, there will be a container for them in the narthex. 4 OKTOB ER FEST German Flavor at Coffee Hour Oktoberfest 2018 Plans are under way for our Annual Oktoberfest polka worship service. Mark your calendar for Sunday, October 7. The Good Time Dutchmen Band will lead the music and singing at an 8:45 a.m. service. Following the service, worshippers are invited to Gemütlichkeit Under the Tent until 11 a.m. when dinner will be served in the Fellowship Hall. This year, Zion members will again prepare the delicious meal which will include: Baked Ham and Oven Baked Chicken, mashed potatoes, sauerkraut stuffing, vegetable, dinner rolls, dessert, and beverages. Tickets are available from Heidi Tunak- $10 for adults, and $5 for children ages 4 through 10, At 1 p.m., the festivities move to Maple Inn in Old Ashippun for a polka dance, complete with door prizes and raffles. Tickets for the dance are $5 at the door. The Zion ladies quilt raffle has become a tradition at Oktoberfest, and this year is no exception. The winner will be drawn at 5 p.m. at the dance. Oktoberfest is one of Zion s annual fundraisers. ALL members are encouraged to support this effort by selling and buying raffle tickets and participating in the worship service, dinner, and dance. Pick up your raffle tickets from the Siedschlag s before or after church services. Tickets are $5 each or 3 for $10. Simply put, here are some of the ways YOU can make Oktoberfest a success: 1. Attend 2. Volunteer to help with the meal-see Debbie Guenther 3. Attend 4. Sell raffle tickets-see an Oktoberfest Committee Member 5. Attend 6. Bake desserts to be served with the meal 7. Attend 8. Donate prizes for the small raffles-homemade items are nice and so enjoyed by the winners 9. Attend 10. Help with set up/clean up Quilt on Display This year s quilt will soon be on display in the Narthex. Doreen Schultz has tickets for the machine quilted, Scrappy Maple Leaves Quilt in various shades of leaf colors. Be sure to get your ticket supply from Sandy and Doreen so you can start selling. Ticket prices are $4 each or 3 for $10. Thank-you to Ele and Sandy for the beautiful quilt! The Phone is Ringing If it s someone from Zion, please answer and say, Yes! Since we are doing our own meal preparation again this year, we need to add more helping hands to the list of faithful workers. There are lots more jobs that need volunteers. Here s a sample: Meal preparation and serving Beverage servers Cut desserts, plate, refill cake plates on each table Ticket takers Clean up crew Weigh, wrap, or sell leftovers Don t be shy! You have the talent and expertise to do any number of things, just say, Yes. Please let Debbie Guenther know your availability. September Coffee Hours Oktoberfest committee members are planning coffee hours leading up to Oktoberfest by providing a variety of ethnic treats following worship services. Come to worship; stay for a taste of the Old World. If there is anyone that would like to assist with hosting or serving on one of the Sundays, a sign-up sheet will be posted in the Narthex. If you have questions about how you can help, see any Oktoberfest Committee member below and sign up on the sheets posted in the Narthex. You can help make this our annual event a huge success! 5 You need t Saints in Light Can you believe it? Summer is all but over. That means Sunday School will be resuming. Zion Artisan & Vendor Sale Zion Artisan and Vendor Sale is on Saturday, November 10 from 10 until 3. There will be a bake sale, raffle drawings, and delightful gourmet lunch choices, plus new and repeat vendors. Mark your calendar...spread the word. Artisans can pick up registration forms at church or from Doreen. Space rental is only $20 for an 8 x 10 booth. Contact Doreen Schultz for more information. Piggly Wiggly Receipts The cash register receipts you dropped in the box during the months of July and August totaled $8,236.68! A percentage of that total translates into a generous donation by Piggly Wiggly to the youth bank account. Reminder: Piggly Wiggly prefers the receipts not be rolled and rubber banded. Flat and/or folded is okay. Thanks for turning in your CURRENT receipts. It s an easy fund-raiser for Zion youth! Shop the Pig! All Saints Day will be celebrated Sunday, November 4, Our celebration this year will have an added feature. More details will follow as we near this occasion. Use the request form in this newsletter to honor special people in your life by lighting our tree. Red lights honor living friends and relatives; white lights honor the deceased. Requests will be accepted through October 28. See Annette with questions and to return request forms/donations. Recycle Here s your chance to recycle and help those in need by recycling your plastic bags. The bags will be cut down into strips and crocheted into mats. The mats provide comfort and warmth to the homeless sleeping on the ground. Thank you Mary Lee, Erla, Beaty and Marian for your time.
