1 St. Juan Diego Parish Archdiocese of Portland in Oregon January 12, 2014 The Baptism of the Lord Where it Starts The Feast of the Baptism of the Lord sits in the shadows of Christmas and Epiphany, but it was pivotal in the life of Jesus of Nazareth, not only in terms of his grasp of his personal vocation but also his realization that though he may have lost his earthly father Joseph, he was not fatherless. To see Jesus baptism as his personal coming-of-age reminds you of the significance of your own baptism. Jesus Father is our Father. If you renew your baptismal vows, do it with conviction. Consider what it means for you to hear the Father say, This is my beloved daughter and son, in whom I am well pleased. Take Five for Faith 2013 by TrueQuest Communications, L.L.C PowerPoint Operator Training There is a training session for all PowerPoint operators Monday, January 13, at 7:00 pm in the Church. Anyone who would like to help out with this important ministry is welcome to come. For more information please contact Dean Kling at or dfkling@gmail.com The Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick Anointing of the Sick will be celebrated at all Masses January The sacrament is meant for those whose health is seriously impaired by sickness, chronic conditions, or old age. A prudent and reasonably sure judgment, without scruple, is sufficient for deciding on the seriousness of an illness. Elderly people may be anointed if they have become notably weakened even though no serious illness is present. Sick children may be anointed if they have sufficient use of reason to be strengthened by this sacrament. This Sacrament is used for the healing of body, mind and spirit and therefore should be requested very early in an illness. Although called Last Rites by some for a period of time this was never the Sacrament s original intent nor its official title. Pastoral Care Ministry to the Sick If you would like to arrange for home visits for communion by one of our lay ministers, for someone unable to attend mass, please call the parish office at Please know that even if we cannot be with you at a particular time the community of Saint Juan Diego prays regularly for all who may be sick or dying. Prayer Intentions For those who are ill: Dan Kirkpatrick Emmett Verkest, grandson of Don & Jeannie Verkest For those who have died: Johna Gorman Please contact the parish office if you wish to add a name to our Prayer Intentions Next week our parish will take up the Collection for the Catholic Communication Campaign (CCC) This Collection communicates the Gospel through Catholic social media activities and enriches our faith through Internet, television, radio, and print media. Half of all proceeds remain in our archdiocese and support local needs, so please be generous in this collection. CCC equips us to share our experience of faith, worship, and witness with the world. Our Mission We are St. Juan Diego Catholic Church, a welcoming community empowered by the Holy Spirit, who worship, serve and evangelize as we gather a vibrant, diverse, multicultural People of God dedicated to proclaiming the Death and Resurrection of Jesus Christ. 5 Join your parish this Lent in Are You Ready to Grow Closer to God? In the Eucharist we learn to see the heights and depths of reality. The bread and wine are changed into the body and blood of Christ, who becomes present in his Passover to the Father: this movement draws us, body and soul, into the movement of all creation towards its fulfillment in God. (Lumen Fidei #44) You are invited to: Deepen your Catholic faith. Strengthen your family and Faith community. Live more fully as a disciple Jesus every day.
