Psalm 95:6 No matter who you are a committed follower of Jesus, a person curious about Christianity, or a skeptic of spirituality God is callg you worship him. Wherever you are on journey, we hope that you feel welcomed and at home. Perhaps you have never been church (or not a long time) and fear that you will not know what do, how act, or what say. Be assured: God s grace is for people just like you. In our congregation, we follow an ancient liturgical pattern our worship, drawg from wisdom of Christians who have gone before us. Every Sunday we renew our commitment God, offer him our prayers and gifts, confess our ss, receive forgiveness, hear from God s word, and celebrate Lord s Supper ger. We fd worshippg this way liberates us from our culture's obsession with that which is novel. We have also found worshippg this way be deeply and profoundly formative over time. If you are not used worship, or not used worshippg this manner, give yourself some time get acclimated. We also make every effort expla thgs as we go along. Although we are committed worshipg this manner, we realize that danger of liturgical worship is that it can become an empty ritual. We understand that, at its heart, worship is profoundly relational. It encompasses both our relationship with God and our relationship with one anor. Every week we gar meet with God, strengn our ties one anor, and welcome strangers our congregation. For se reasons, although our worship is structured and formed by ancient practices, we also strive for it be warm and personal. In all of this, our great confidence is that God enjoys meetg with us. Let us worship! Unless orwise noted, all Scripture quotations are from The Holy Bible, English Standard Version (ESV ), copyright 2001 by Crossway, a publishg mistry of Good News Publishers. 5 LECTIO SACRA Job 1:121 Seated There was a man land of Uz whose name was Job, and that man was blameless and upright, one who feared God and turned away from evil. There were born him seven sons and three daughters. He possessed 7,000 sheep, 3,000 camels, 500 yoke of oxen, and 500 female donkeys, and very many servants, so that this man was greatest of all people of east. His sons used go and hold a feast house of each one on his day, and y would send and vite ir three sisters eat and drk with m. And when days of feast had run ir course, Job would send and consecrate m, and he would rise early morng and offer burnt offergs accordg number of m all. For Job said, It may be that my children have sned, and cursed God ir hearts. Thus Job did contually. Lectio Sacra means sacred readg. It has been practice of church for thousands of years have portions of bible read durg worship services. The assumption behd this practice is that we are people who need be shaped by all of God s word. Now re was a day when sons of God came present mselves before Lord, and Satan also came among m. The Lord said Satan, From where have you come? Satan answered Lord and said, From gog and fro on earth, and from walkg up and down on it. And Lord said Satan, Have you considered my servant Job, that re is none like him on earth, a blameless and upright man, who fears God and turns away from evil? Then Satan answered Lord and said, Does Job fear God for no reason? Have you not put a hedge around him and his house and all that he has, on every side? You have blessed work of his hands, and his possessions have creased land.but stretch out your hand and uch all that he has, and he will curse you your face. And Lord said Satan, Behold, all that he has is your hand. Only agast him do not stretch out your hand. So Satan went out from presence of Lord. Now re was a day when his sons and daughters were eatg and drkg we ir oldest bror's house, and re came a messenger Job and said, The oxen were plowg and donkeys feedg beside m, and Sabeans fell upon m and ok m and struck down servants with edge of sword, and I alone have escaped tell you. While he was yet speakg, re came anor and said, The fire of God fell from heaven and burned up sheep and servants and consumed m, and I alone have escaped tell you. While he was yet speakg, re came anor and said, The Chaldeans formed three groups and made a raid on camels and ok m and struck down servants with edge of sword, and I alone have escaped tell you. While he was yet speakg, re came anor and said, Your sons and daughters were eatg and drkg we ir oldest bror's house, and behold, a great wd came across wilderness and struck four corners of house, and it fell upon young people, and y are dead, and I alone have escaped tell you. Then Job arose and re his robe and shaved his head and fell on ground and worshiped. And he said, Naked I came from my mor's womb, and naked shall I return. The Lord gave, and Lord has taken away; blessed be name of Lord. This is Word of Lord! Thanks be God! 2
