Kris Dries Justin Weber A FOCUS ON DEVOTIONS Divine Mercy If you enter the church through the Atrium you will see on your left the image of Divine Mercy. The image depicts what the Polish Sister, St. Maria Faustina Kowalska ( 1938) saw in a vision she received and later described in her famous diary. Jesus is robed in white and His whole body leans out of the dark background as if to meet the viewer. His right hand is raised in blessing while the other points toward His heart, both hands bearing the marks of His crucifixion. Two rays of brilliant light, one red and another white, burst forth. At the bottom are the words, Jesus, I trust in you. The first painting was completed in 1934 by Eugeniusz Kazimirowski ( 1939) and was done with the guidance of St. Faustina and her confessor, Blessed Fr. Michał Sopoćko ( 1975). The original image can still be seen today at the Divine Mercy Sanctuary in Vilnius, Lithuania. However, the painting popularly associated with the devotion (and the one we have) was painted later, in 1943 by Adolf Hyla ( 1965). He wished to express his gratitude for the survival of his family following the devastation of World War II and painted the image as a votive offering of thanksgiving. Both images, while slightly different, contain the essential elements of St. Faustina s vision and are very similar. Perhaps it is fitting that there are two images. While both point to the singular experience of St. Faustina s vision, it would be impossible for one image to do it justice. This is similar to the revelation of God s mercy. In the Old Testament, we find three Hebrew roots that are often translated as mercy. One of the most poetic and succinct descriptions of God s merciful love is found in Exodus 34:6 where all three roots appear together. The Lord, the Lord, a God gracious (hannun) and merciful (rahum), slow to anger and abounding in love (hesed) and fidelity. These three words all point towards the singular reality of God s love and how it is revealed. Hannun implies a free gift with no mutuality implied. The mercy that God shows to the sinner is freely bestowed and originates from His love. Rahum describes the physical love that is moved by compassion such as the love a mother has for her child or the love a brother and sister share through their common familial bond. Finally, hesed points towards a love that is mutual and dependable. Yet, throughout the Old Testament, we read how God s chosen people continued to fall in and out of relationship with Him. The gracious gift (hannun) of His love is rejected time and time again. The poor and the oppressed are ignored, showing a lack of compassion (rahum) towards one s neighbor. God s fidelity (hesed) to Israel was not returned. Yet God remained faithful so much so that in the fullness of time (Gal 4:4) He sent His only Son who for our sake was made to be sin who did not know sin (2 Cor 5:21). Through Jesus passion absolute justice was expressed as He suffered because of the sins of humanity but, as St. John Paul II writes, this justice springs completely from love and is accomplished in love, producing fruits of salvation. These fruits of salvation are borne especially in the Sacraments where Jesus continues to touch, heal, and nourish us. The Sacrament of Reconciliation is perhaps the most emblematic of His mercy. One may be forgiven for thinking that the signature, Jesus, I trust in you is solely a pious afterthought. Yet faced by our weaknesses we can tire of asking God s forgiveness or hold onto sins that seem to big to let go of. Yet, in that same Sacrament we are reminded that God, the Father of mercies, through the death and resurrection of his Son has reconciled the world to Himself and sent the Holy Spirit among us for the forgiveness of sins. Throughout salvation history, God has shown us the depth of His mercy, compassion, and love. If we approach Him, even seventy times seven (Mt 18:21-22) times, with trust and contrition, He promises to heal. Justin Weber serves as St. Mary s Visitation s summer seminarian intern. Baptism Preparation Children ages 6 and under: Those seeking to have children baptized should be registered, active members of St. Mary s Visitation Parish. Parents who request baptism for a child are expected to complete a preparation class. It is offered bimonthly. The scheduled classes for this year are: Saturday, September 1 st from 10:30-11:30am in church Saturday, November 3 rd from 10:30-11:30am in church It is generally easier if the preparation is done before the birth of the child. If you have attended a session within the last five years, it is not necessary to retake the class. The Sacrament of Matrimony The Catholic Church takes preparation for the Sacrament of Matrimony very seriously. Generally at least 6 months should be allowed for this preparation. Engaged couples themselves should call the parish office to schedule an appointment to discuss their plans. Marriage can take place any day of the week, although Saturday is generally preferred by couples. Sunday weddings are possible, but a wedding Mass is not allowed for such occasions. The Sacrament of the Sick The Sacrament of the Sick is available every Monday after the 6:30am Mass. Please stop by the sacristy prior to Mass to let the priest know. Members of the parish facing surgery or other medical procedures or tests are invited to receive this Sacrament prior to their appointment. If you know of someone who is in the hospital or who would like a visit from a Parish staff member, please call the Parish Office. Adoration Chapel What an array of feasts we have during the coming week! On Tuesday, the 21st we celebrate the feast of St. Pius X, the Pope who encouraged frequent Communion for adults, sacramental preparation for children, and instruction in Catechism for everyone. The feast of the Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which is August 22nd, was instituted by Pius XII in 1954, so that all may clearly recognize and more zealously venerate the kind and maternal role of the Mother of God. On August 24th we celebrate the feast of St. Bartholomew who left everything to become an apostle. May we follow his desire to be with Jesus. Celebrate these feasts by visiting St. Mary s Perpetual Adoration Chapel. Leave your busyness aside and sign up to join the Adoration program and spend a designated hour in the Chapel on a weekly, bi-weekly or monthly basis. If this is not possible, sign up to serve as a substitute. We MUST have at least one person in the Chapel at all times. Do your part to keep the program running successfully, as it has done for almost 33 years! God will do His part by bestowing His bountiful blessings on YOU! 6 Calling All Parish Knitters Our inventory of baptismal blankets has run out! Could you kindly help us replenish our supply? Babies baptized at St. Mary s are given a white blanket which has been blessed at their baptism, as a welcome gift to our newest members. These blankets are lovingly made with prayers for the newborn and their family. Please stop in the Parish Office and pick up white yarn for this project. Thank you for dedicating your time, talent and prayers to this wonderful ministry! SMV Senior Group Road Trip For our September 10 meeting, we are going on a road trip! Those who wish to go need to be at the SMV Senior Center no later than 11:30am on September 10. A bus will be provided at no charge to our members and we will travel from the Senior Center to Meyer s restaurant for lunch (each member will pay for their own lunch). Meyer s is located at 4260 S. 76 th Street in Greenfield. After lunch, we will travel to St. Sava s Serbian Orthodox Cathedral for a tour by a member of the clergy, at no charge to our members. St. Sava s is located at 3201 S. 51 st Street. We will then return to the Senior Center by 2:30pm.
