Kris Dries POSTINGS FROM FATHER PETER Christmas Greetings It s amazing to me that no matter how old we might be how many Christmases we have already lived through that there continues to be something which draws us on numerous levels into this celebration of the birth of Our Lord. We encounter the beauty of these days and something deep within us wells up and fills our minds and hearts with joy and peace. And, of course, this makes sense, since what we are celebrating is our own redemption, the profound love of God who, when we were lost in darkness, pours forth His light into the world, in the Person of His Son. On this Christmas, I d like to share with you some of the words written by St. John Chrysostom, who lived over sixteen hundred years ago, they are words from a homily he preached on Christmas Day: I behold a new and wondrous mystery. My ears resound to the Shepherd s song, piping no soft melody, but chanting full forth a heavenly hymn. The Angels sing. The Archangels blend their voice in harmony. The Cherubim hymn their joyful praise. The Seraphim exalt His glory. All join to praise this holy feast, beholding the Godhead here on earth, and man in heaven. He who is above, now for our redemption dwells here below and he that was lowly is by divine mercy raised. Bethlehem this day resembles heaven; hearing from the stars the singing of angelic voices; and in place of the sun, enfolds within itself on every side, the Sun of Justice. And ask not how: for where God wills, the order of nature yields. For He willed, He had the power, He descended, He redeemed; all things move in obedience to God. This day He who is, is born; and He who is becomes what He was not On behalf of myself, Fr. John Gibson and the entire Parish Staff a very blessed and joyful Christmas to all of you! Adoration Chapel A Blessed, Merry Christmas to all! May you receive the gift of Faith, the blessing of Hope, and the peace of God s Love this Christmas and always. This week is filled with many important feast days the most important of which is the Nativity. On Wednesday, the 26th we celebrate the feast of St. Stephen, the first martyr and patron of deacons. How blessed we are to have three deacons at St. Mary s! Thank God for them. Take time to pray for them and to thank them for their wonderful, faithful service. On the 27th we remember St. John, the apostle and evangelist, who authored the fourth Gospel, the Book of Revelation, and the three letters that bear his name. On the 28th we honor the Holy Innocents the male children who were killed instead of Jesus by King Herod. Commemorate all these feast days by visiting the St. Mary s Perpetual Adoration Chapel. Give thanks to Jesus for all His blessings and ask Him to guide you through your life, so that you may join Him and all the saints in heaven for all eternity. REGISTRATION & SACRAMENTS Parish Registration St. Mary s Visitation is always happy to welcome new members! If you are interested in joining the parish, please call the Parish Office, or Nora Mihm, nmihm@stmaryeg.org to make an appointment. Baptism Preparation Children ages 6 and under: Those seeking to have children baptized should be registered, active members of St. Mary s Visitation Parish. Parents who request baptism for a child are expected to complete a preparation class. It is offered bi-monthly. The scheduled classes for 2019 include: Saturday, January 12 th from 10:30-11:30am in church Saturday, March 2 nd from 10:30-11:30am in church It is generally easier if the preparation is done before the birth of the child. If you have attended a session within the last five years, it is not necessary to retake the class. Children ages 6-12: Please contact Josh Dieterich, or jdieterich@stmaryeg.org. Adults ages 12 and up: Adults who wish to join the Catholic Church and were not baptized can participate in the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA). The Sacrament of Matrimony The Catholic Church takes preparation for the Sacrament of Matrimony very seriously. Generally at least 6 months should be allowed for this preparation. Engaged couples themselves should call the parish office to schedule an appointment to discuss their plans. Marriage can take place any day of the week, although Saturday is generally preferred by couples. Sunday weddings are possible, but a wedding Mass is not allowed for such occasions. The Sacrament of the Sick The Sacrament of the Sick is available every Monday after the 6:30am Mass. Please stop by the sacristy prior to Mass to let the priest know. Members of the parish facing surgery or other medical procedures or tests are invited to receive this Sacrament prior to their appointment. SCHOOL NEWS St. Mary s To Offer All Day K3 Program New for the school year, St. Mary s Visitation will offer all day K3, from 7:45am-2:30pm each school day. The option for half day K3 still exists, with dismissal at 11:30am. Please call the school office for registration details. RCIA Rite of Acceptance and Welcoming RCIA Rite of Acceptance and Welcoming is January 5th at the 5pm Mass. Please consider joining us to meet and pray for our parishioners who are studying to become Catholic at the Easter Vigil Mass in April. VIBE Bible Study is Back! Beginning Thursday, January 10th from 9-10:45am in the Senior Center, we will study the Book of Hebrews. Sessions will be taught by Josh Dieterich and Fr. John Gibson.
