PARISH REGISTRATION St. Mary s is always happy to welcome new members. If you are interested in parish membership, it would be most helpful if you would call to make an appointment to register ( ). An appointment will guarantee the presence of a staff member to answer your questions and walk through a welcome packet with you. Baptism Preparation Children ages 6 and under: Those seeking to have children baptized should be registered, active members of St. Mary s Visitation Parish. Parents who request baptism for a child are expected to complete a preparation class. It is offered bi-monthly. The scheduled classes for this year are: Saturday, July 1 st from 10:30-11:30am in church Saturday, September 9 th from 10:30-11:30am in church It is generally easier if the preparation is done before the birth of the child. If you have attended a session within the last five years, it is not necessary to retake the class. To schedule a baptism, please view the baptism dates on the parish website, Please contact Jenny Dascoli in the Liturgy & Music office at or jdascoli@stmaryeg.org for more information or to register for the baptism class. Children ages 6-12: Please call the Liturgy & Music Office. Adults ages 12 and up: Adults who wish to join the Catholic Church and were not baptized can participate in the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA). Please call Josh Dieterich, Co-director of Christian Formation - Middle School, Adult and Family Ministry, for more information. The Sacrament of Matrimony The Catholic Church takes preparation for the Sacrament of Matrimony very seriously. Generally at least 6 months should be allowed for this preparation. Engaged couples themselves should call the parish office to schedule an appointment to discuss their plans. Marriage can take place any day of the week, although Saturday is generally preferred by couples. Sunday weddings are possible, but a wedding Mass is not allowed for such occasions.
3 3 Postings from Fr. Peter The Power of Silence I always hesitate to recommend books to people unless they particularly ask for a specific recommendation. I hesitate because everyone has different tastes and what one finds particularly interesting may be boring or not worthwhile to another. I want to go out on a bit of limb though and make a recommendation for a book that you may want to consider reading over this coming summer. It is called The Power of Silence: Against the Dictatorship of Noise by Robert Cardinal Sarah with Nicolas Diat. Cardinal Sarah is the Prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments. It has been recently published by Ignatius Press and is set-up in an interview format. I have found it to be truly an inspiring book and one full of material for reflection and contemplation and a book that speaks a profound truth which is missing in our society today. It will come as no great surprise to anyone that we live in a world full of noise, noise that both assaults our ears and noise which can assault the rest of our senses. Our modern world seems to be devoid of silence, because of modern machinery and technology and the fastpaced motion of our society it seems as if silence is something that remains an unattainable dream. This lack of silence, this preponderance of noise has deep ramifications for our spiritual life and our encounter with God, as Cardinal Sarah writes, in silence, not in turmoil and noise, God enters into the innermost depths of our being. This book not only lays out what has happened to our society which has caused such constant noise and chattering and activity, but he also points out how this affects our relationship with God and what it has done to us as human beings and reminds us of the great gift that is silence. Cardinal Sarah, in this book, encourages people of faith to join a sort of resistance movement. What will become of our world if it does not look for intervals of silence? Interior rest and harmony can flow only from silence. Without it, life does not exist. The greatest mysteries of the world are born and unfold in silence. How does nature develop? In the greatest silence. A tree grows in silence, and springs of water flow at first in the silence of the ground. The sun that rises over the earth in its splendor and grandeur warms us in silence. What is extraordinary is always silent. For Cardinal Sarah, silence is not an end in itself, it is the means to an end it is an opening of a door to God who so often remains silent and allows for Him to speak to us in the silence. I have often thought of summer as being the Sabbath of the year. Just as a week has its Sabbath day of rest, so too does the year as a whole it is summer. On this Memorial Day weekend we traditionally kick off the summer season as the weather (hopefully!) warms up, as school winds down and as summer vacations begin. Part of the Sabbath is quiet reflection and communication with God and it seems to me that summer should encourage us to do that over the course of these warm months of creating space and time for silence, of stepping back from words and noise and activity to break the dictatorship of noise, in order to enter more fully into the silence so as to encounter God more completely and fully. Developing the Moral Imagination of Your Children Wednesday, June 7th, 7pm St. Mary s Visitation Parish Atrium Leila Lawler, a.k.a. 5 MAY 28, Adoration Chapel As we celebrate the feast of the Ascension this weekend, let your prayers and adoration ascend to Jesus in the St. Mary's Perpetual Adoration Chapel. May they rise up like incense before Him. Monday, May 29th is Memorial Day. Plan now to attend Mass and visit the Chapel to pray for the souls of all the servicemen and women who have given their lives for us. May they enjoy their eternal reward in heaven as we enjoy living in this country in the freedom which they earned for us. Let us give thanks to God for His Son who died to save us and for all the members of the Armed forces who died to save our country. On Wednesday, May 31st we celebrate the feast of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary--the patronal feast of our parish. Plan to attend Mass that day and also visit the Chapel. Thank Jesus for being in the Blessed Sacrament in our Chapel 24/7 and for the many other blessings He has showered on our parish Ask Him and Our Blessed Mother to continue to guide and guard us. There is not more excellent way to obtain graces from God than to seek them through Mary, because her Divine Son cannot refuse her anything. Peter has nominated Mr. Gordon Giampietro as Trustee Secretary for a renewal of term beginning July 1, 2017 and ending June 30, The parish charter also allows any practicing baptized and confirmed Catholic member of the parish, at least 25 years old, to be nominated in writing by ten or more parish members.
