Volunteers Needed We are looking for volunteers to participate in the Washing of the Feet on Holy Thursday, March 29 at the 7pm Mass. The Washing of the Feet is an important ritual in the Easter Triduum. It requires no extra practice. You will receive details explaining the ritual and will need to arrive by 6:35pm to check in and receive final instruction. 3 3 Postings from Fr. Peter March Devotion: St. Joseph As the calendar turns over into March, the first month of Spring, our attention moves to St. Joseph whose feast day is celebrated right in the middle of the month on March 19 th. The devotion the Church recommends during March is a devotion to St. Joseph. In the Collect of the Mass of his feast day, we hear: Grant, we pray, almighty God, that by St. Joseph s intercession your Church may constantly watch over the unfolding of the mysteries of human salvation, whose beginnings you entrusted to his faithful care. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen. This beautiful prayer points us to an important and central aspect of who St. Joseph is and how he lived his life on earth namely, that he is a protector. We hear that the beginnings of the mysteries of human salvation were entrusted to his faithful care and even now St. Joseph exercises that role as protector and guardian for the entire Church. St. Joseph is known as a just and righteous man, the Preface of St. Joseph states this directly, he is this just man and he was a wise and faithful servant who was placed in charge of your household. St. Joseph exercises this protecting charge today as the Protector of the Universal Church just as he guarded Mary and the Christ Child, so too today does he stand as guard over the Mystical Body of Christ, the Church. Furthermore, St. Joseph s role as protector and guardian of the Holy Family makes him a model and example of what it means to be a Christian husband and father. As we pray again the Preface, he was called to watch like a father over the Holy Family and we hear in the Prayer over the Offerings that St. Joseph served with loving care God s Only Begotten Son, born of the Virgin Mary This is one of the primary roles and duties of a Christian husband and father, to watch over and to guide and protect the family in his care to protect them certainly physically from danger, but also from spiritual and moral danger. Like St. Joseph, the Christian husband and father is called to be morally upright and righteous in God s sight, and a man whose strength lies in the strength of his faith and who exercises that strength as guardian over his family. In addition to serving as a role model for Christian husbands and fathers, St. Joseph also serves as a model and example for all who work. On May 1 st we will celebrate a second feast of St. Joseph, this time of St. Joseph the Worker. In the Collect of that Mass we hear: O God, Creator of all things, who laid down for the human race the law of work, graciously grant that by the example of Saint Joseph and under his patronage we may complete the works you set us to do and attain the rewards you promise. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen. The call to work is part of what it means to live here on earth and while the professions and work we engage in varies from person to person, the disposition with which we are meant to approach it is the same we are meant to work as St. Joseph worked. In his own work, St. Joseph was a man of integrity, doing an honest day s work for an honest day s pay, he is just with the interaction of those who purchased his handmade wooden goods from him, and he saw that the work he was called to do not only supported his family, but also made use of the talents and the time that God had given him and helped him to imitate the Father Himself, who worked for the six days of creation. St. Joseph also honored the Sabbath and was able to set aside work on the Sabbath day so as to devote more time to God and his family and sought to provide for his family not only materially (the monetary compensation for his work), but also to provide for his family his love and affection and care and the wisdom to know when work needed to be set aside in order to provide for the Holy Family in other ways. Finally, St. Joseph is considered the patron saint of a happy death. This is rooted in the ancient tradition that St. Joseph died in the arms of Mary and Jesus. We too hope and pray that after our earthly lives are complete we die in the arms of Mary and Jesus with our souls in the state of grace and having faithfully served the Lord over the course of our earthly lives so that we may be welcomed into the heavenly kingdom. St. Mary s Thrift Shop is much more than a resale shop it s a busy ministry at St. Mary s Visitation that provides the following for those who shop or volunteer: Clothing resource for limited income families; customer service and hospitality to all who enter; an atmosphere where volunteers have fun, nurture friendships and encourage one another; and provide additional income for the parish. The Thrift Shop is always looking for enthusiastic, customerfriendly, dedicated volunteers (ages 16 and older) looking to help others, as well as the Parish. St. Mary s Thrift Shop is continually blessed with large quantities of beautiful and varied donations. To keep the shop running smoothly, volunteers help sort, price and put selected donations on the store floor. Volunteers also help display and organize items, clean when and where necessary, and work the cash register. Volunteering at the Thrift Shop presents an excellent opportunity to make a difference, build and nurture friendships, encourage other volunteers, fulfill high school service hours, just to name a few. In an atmosphere of sharing and friendship, the customer isn t the only one who leaves happy. Additionally, volunteers receive first dibs on donated items, meaning volunteers may purchase a donation before it is ever displayed in the store. You determine your level of involvement. Adoration Chapel As you continue your journey through Lent to Easter, heed the words of Jesus: Come to me all you who labor and I will give you rest. Entrust your cares to the Lord as you visit Him in the Blessed Sacrament in St. Mary s Perpetual Adoration Chapel. St. Ambrose exhorts us: When we find ourselves in some grave danger, we must not lose courage, but firmly trust in God, for where there is the greatest danger, there is also the greatest help from the One who wants to be called our Help in times of peace and in times of tribulation. Always remember as Psalm 103 tells us: The Lord is kind and merciful. He pardons all your iniquities. He heals all your ills, He redeems your life from destruction, crowns you with kindness and compassion. Take advantage of spending time with Him in our Chapel. There are certainly plenty of things going on in the world to talk to Our Lord about! In your prayers please remember those who are preparing to receive Baptism, Holy Eucharist and Confirmation at Easter. A 12 Week Bereavement Support Group Are you ready to move forward in your grief journey? Would you like to smile again? Consider joining our St. Mary s Good Grief Support Group. Certified Grief Counselor, Deacon Tom Binder, will lead a 12 consecutive week support group beginning Tuesday, April 10th 10 am to 11:30 am in the Atrium Library. A few of the topics that will be discussed include: The Difference Between Grief and Mourning; Special Days and Holidays; Expectations vs. Reality; Guilt, Regret, Self-Blame; Grief Bursts; and Developing a new Self-Identity. Professor Oliveira is a former Professor of Sociology at UW-Waukesha. Her work should be of particular interest to senior Catholics. She has taught classes on a wide range of topics. One of her classes examines the meaning of life and evidence of the afterlife. Another of her classes studies the reality of miracles in everyday life, including miraculous interventions and supernatural signs that invite our attention, gratitude and awe. She also teaches a class on Angels and their activity in the modern world. We look forward to her presentation and hope that all of St. Mary s seniors will be able to join us Tuesday, the 6 th of March.
