The Washing of the Feet is an important ritual in the Easter Triduum. You will receive details explaining the ritual and will need to arrive by 6:35pm to check in and receive final instruction. The tree of our defeat became our tree of victory; where life was lost, there life has been restored through Christ our Lord. The Church s custom of venerating the wood of the cross began at Jerusalem where the true cross was found in the early part of the 4 th century. Since then, every generation of the faithful has longed to Behold the wood of the cross, on which is hung our salvation. The Good Friday liturgy calls for veneration of the cross, not the crucifix; that we focus on the wood, on the tree the instrument of salvation. Christ restored creation by means of the very material which caused its fall. The tree of our defeat became our tree of victory. When we gaze upon the cross, we fix our eyes on the sign of victory over sin and death. In our veneration of the cross on Good Friday, we will be in living contact with the one, undivided Church of past centuries; with the ancient Jerusalem Church; and with Calvary itself. 5 MARCH 11, On the evening of Holy Thursday Lent comes to an end, and we enter into the Three Days that are the center of our year. On These Three Days, the Church is at its best. In song, scripture, and ritual we proclaim the heart of what we believe and celebrate throughout the year. We gather often - at church, at home - during the Triduum to reflect on the central reality of our faith, the death and resurrection of Jesus. These are the high holy days of Christianity. You are invited to make these Three Days different from all the other days of the year. Adults in the community are invited to plan ahead so that the entire time from Holy Thursday evening until the Easter Vigil is free of social engagements, free even of work, free of entertainment, free of meals except for the simplest nourishment. 6 This Week at Visitation Institute Speaker Series A 12 Week Bereavement Support Group Thursday, March 15th, 6:30-8pm in the Atrium Faith and (vs.?) Science - The Relationship between the Church & the Natural Sciences, Dr. Chris Stoughton, Ph.D. Are you ready to move forward in your grief journey? Would you like to smile again? Consider joining our St. Mary s Good Grief Support Group. In today s culture it often seems that science is the only thing that counts in measuring what is true. Indeed frequent studies attribute the apparent conflicts between Faith and science as a major reason for young people leaving the Faith. This apparent incompatibility is not a real one at all. The Church has been a leader in the balance between Faith and Science and that has not changed today. Certified Grief Counselor, Deacon Tom Binder, will lead a 12 consecutive week support group beginning Dr. Chris Stoughton currently serves as a member of the Experimental Astrophysics Group at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in the Chicago suburbs where he has been involved in developing new methods to fuse modern particle physics and astronomical cosmology. He completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Notre Dame and his PhD in Physics at Columbia University. He is a member of the Society of Catholic Scientists and is a regular speaker on the relationship between faith and science. Visitation Institute is held each Thursday in March. SMV Vacation Bible School 2018 June 25-29, 2018, 9am-noon VBS is a fun, faith-filled week for children entering grades K3-5th, including crafts, music, acting and games. A few of the topics that will be discussed include: The Difference Between Grief and Mourning; Special Days and Holidays; Expectations vs. Reality; Guilt, Regret, Self-Blame; Grief Bursts; and Developing a new Self-Identity.
