Forty days after the birth of a child, Israelite parents presented the newborn at the temple in Jerusalem. Luke says that the parents of Jesus obeyed this law. In doing so, they revealed him as the fulfillment of the law. [Sourcebook 2005, p. 68] It is Simeon s prophecy that connects the action of presenting the child Jesus to God to the symbol of candles on this feast. In the gospel from Luke, Simeon s words at seeing the infant Jesus are: Now, Master, you can dismiss your servant in peace; you have fulfilled your word. For my eyes have witnessed your saving deed displayed for all the peoples to see: A revealing light to the Gentiles, the glory of your people Israel. Christ is the Light for all people. In the past, Catholics often had blessed candles in their home - candles to light when someone was sick, when there was a bad storm or a special need. Candles are a reminder of Christ s presence. Candles for use in church are blessed on this day. We have candle sets available in the parish office. If you wish, please stop by to pick up a set (we ask a nominal donation of $2.00) and bring it to the 6:30am Mass on Thursday, February 2 nd to be blessed. Or, if you have a candle from home that you would like to have blessed, please bring it along to Mass. 5 Adoration Chapel On Thursday, February 2nd we celebrate the feast of the Presentation of Our Lord in the Temple. When is the last time you presented yourself to Jesus in the St. Mary's Perpetual Adoration Chapel? How often do you visit Him there? When Simeon held Jesus in his arms he declared that he was ready to see death. Are you prepared to meet God face to face? Life is short. If you defer changing your ways until the hour of your death, you are blind, for you do not know either the time or the place where you will die. If we desire a good death, we must lead a Christian life. (St. John Vianney) The awesome, peaceful Chapel, which is available 24/7, is the ideal spot to pray for the graces necessary to get through this life and earn eternal salvation. Jesus withdrew from His ministry periodically and made time to pray. What can you do to make time for prayer in your busy life? Join the Adoration program and make a commitment to spend a designated hour in the Chapel on a weekly, bi-weekly or monthly basis, or to serve as a substitute. The rewards are everlasting! We Need Coverage: Sundays 1-2 am, Call Colleen Schwarz, Mondays 2-3 am, Call Mary Rhomberg, am, Tuesdays 7-8 am, Call Nancy Frazer, pm, Call Kay Eberle, Wednesdays 1-2 am, Call Joleen Gordon, , Thursdays any or all coverage appreciated 2-3 am, 2nd & 4th weeks only, Call Jack Morien, am, Jan-May Fridays 2-3 am Call Rita Dragani, am 9-10 am JANUARY 29, Did You Know You Can Automate Your Gift To St. Mary s Visitation Parish?
